FAFSA doubled my SAI to 103k overnight - bug or calculation error?

I'm totally freaking out right now. Logged into my FAFSA account yesterday to check my Student Aid Index and it DOUBLED overnight to over $103,000! Yesterday it was around $51,000 (which was already high but somewhat expected with our family income). Has anyone else experienced this? Is this some kind of widespread glitch in the system? I can't qualify for any aid with an SAI this high. Should I waste my time calling FAFSA or is this a known issue they're working on? My college financial aid deadline is coming up in 3 weeks and I'm panicking.

mine jumped from 34k to 65k last week! thought i was crazy. called the fafsa number but gave up after being on hold for 45 min

Did you try again or just give up? I'm worried if I don't get this fixed ASAP I'll miss out on all possible aid!

This is definitely an issue that's happening to many applicants right now. The new SAI formula is creating inconsistencies, but a doubling overnight usually indicates a calculation error rather than the new formula being applied correctly. Most likely causes: 1. System may have double-counted some income/assets 2. A dependency status change could have happened 3. FAFSA might have recalculated using different tax year data I recommend taking screenshots of both calculations if you can still access them, then contacting your school's financial aid office immediately. They often have direct channels to FAFSA and can help troubleshoot faster than you waiting on hold.

Thank you! I do have screenshots from yesterday and today showing the difference. I'll email my financial aid office right now with those attached.

dont worry too much this happened to my daughter too!! went from 28k to almost 60k in a day. financial aid office told us to sit tight while they figure it out. something about the system applying the new formula twice by accident

How long ago did this happen to your daughter? Has it been fixed yet? I'm having the same issue and wondering if there's a timeline for resolution.

YES!!!! Mine jumped from $42k to $87k and I nearly had a heart attack. Called FAFSA 6 TIMES and couldn't get through - just disconnected after 30+ minutes each time. This is INSANE! The whole system is broken. Why do they make this so HARD every single year?!!

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach a FAFSA agent? I was in the same situation last week with the SAI doubling issue, kept getting disconnected. Used claimyr.com and they got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of hours. The agent confirmed it's a known calculation error they're working to fix. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - was definitely worth it to get actual confirmation rather than just waiting and hoping.

I work at a university financial aid office. We're seeing this exact issue with dozens of students right now. It's a known bug in the FAFSA processing system related to the new calculation methodology. The Department of Education is aware and working on a fix. Some key things to know: 1. This is affecting primarily families with multiple students in college or with certain types of investment income 2. The fix will be applied automatically - you won't need to resubmit 3. Schools are being instructed to use the lower SAI figure when packaging aid 4. The Department expects this to be resolved within 10-14 days I'd recommend contacting your school's financial aid office directly. While waiting for the fix, make sure they're aware of your situation. Most schools are creating lists of affected students to ensure aid packages aren't delayed.

That's incredibly helpful information, thank you! We do have 2 kids in college, so that explains why we might be affected. Will contact our financial aid office today.

Has anyone had their SAI fixed yet? Mine doubled too and I've been waiting for a week now with no change. I'm afraid to submit any college applications until it's fixed because I don't want them to think I don't qualify for aid.

just submit ur apps anyway man. i talked to my financial aid guy at my top choice and he said they know all about this. the schools get like direct notes about this stuff from the dept of education

Update for everyone following this thread: The Department of Education just sent guidance to all schools that they should use the LOWER SAI figure for any student showing this doubling issue. If your school's financial aid office isn't aware, direct them to Dear Colleague Letter GEN-25-03 released yesterday. This is their official workaround while they fix the calculation bug.

THANK YOU! This is such a relief. I'll make sure my school knows about this letter when I talk to them tomorrow.

I'm dealing with the exact same issue! My SAI went from around $47k to $94k overnight and I've been stressed out of my mind. After reading through all these responses, I'm feeling a bit more hopeful that it's a widespread bug rather than something wrong with my specific application. I've already reached out to my financial aid office with screenshots like someone suggested, and I'm going to mention that Dear Colleague Letter GEN-25-03 that Miguel referenced. It's so frustrating that this is happening right when we need to make crucial financial decisions about college, but at least we're not alone in this mess. Fingers crossed it gets resolved soon for all of us!
