FAFSA Pell Grant with SAI 1330 - Will it automatically go to college?
Just got our FAFSA results and I'm confused about next steps for the Pell Grant. My son's SAI came back as 1330, and the FAFSA confirmation page shows he qualifies for a Pell Grant up to $6,895. This is our first time being eligible (our income dropped substantially when I went on disability last year). Do we need to actively apply for the Pell Grant somewhere, or does it automatically get sent to his college? He's been accepted to three schools but hasn't decided yet. Will all three schools offer him the same Pell amount? Sorry for the basic questions - we're navigating this without any help since his high school counselor left mid-year.

congrats on the pell eligibility! you dont need to do ANYTHING else for the pell grant. as long as your son listed the schools on his fafsa, theyll automatically include the pell grant in his financial aid package. the amount should be the same at each school since pell is federal $$$

•Thank you! That's a relief. So we just wait for the financial aid offers to come in from each school?

The Pell Grant will be included automatically in the financial aid package from each school where your son applied and listed on his FAFSA. However, I want to clarify a few things: 1. The $6,895 is the MAXIMUM Pell amount for the 2025-2026 year, but with an SAI of 1330, he'll likely get close to that maximum amount. 2. Each school will disburse the Pell Grant funds directly to his student account, typically half in fall semester and half in spring. 3. Make sure all schools are listed on his FAFSA. You can add schools if needed by logging into studentaid.gov and updating his FAFSA. 4. Watch for verification requests - sometimes financial aid offices need additional documentation before processing the Pell Grant.

•This is extremely helpful, thank you! I did have all three schools listed on the FAFSA. Do you know approximately when we might start receiving the financial aid packages? He needs to make a decision by May 1st.

When my daughter got her first Pell Grant last year, we thought it would just happen automatically but then her account got flagged for "verification" and it delayed everything by nearly 2 months! They wanted more tax documents and some form about household size. Such a headache. Make sure you check your email AND his student portal at each school regularly so you don't miss any requests.

•Oh no! I hadn't even thought about verification. I'll make sure to check both his email and the portals. Did they eventually sort it out for your daughter?

Be careful with that SAI number of 1330. When my son had similar SAI, he qualified for maximum Pell but it didn't cover nearly as much as we thought. Each school packaged it differently - one gave additional grants to cover more costs, another expected more loans. DEFINITELY compare all financial aid offers carefully! The Pell amount will be the same but everything else can vary wildly.

•That's really good to know. We're definitely counting on that Pell Grant to make college affordable. I'll make sure to compare all the offers carefully.

I work in financial aid at a community college, and I can confirm that the Pell Grant is automatically packaged once we receive your FAFSA data. With an SAI of 1330, your son should qualify for very close to the full Pell amount. One tip: If you're having trouble getting in touch with any of the financial aid offices (they get SWAMPED this time of year), I've had students use a service called Claimyr to get through to financial aid departments quickly. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. It's especially helpful during peak FAFSA season when phone lines are constantly busy.

•Thank you for the insider perspective and the tip about Claimyr. I'll definitely keep that in mind if we run into troubles getting through to any of the financial aid offices.

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS WATCHING FOR THAT VERIFICATION!!!! My nephew lost his entire Pell Grant last year because he didnt respond to the verification email in time!!!! They said it went to his spam folder but he never found it. BY THE TIME HE REALIZED the deadline had passed and they wouldn't make exceptions. $6000+ GONE!!!!! Check emails daily and call the financial aid office if you dont hear anything within 2 weeks of submitting FAFSA!!!!

•That's absolutely terrifying! I'm so sorry that happened to your nephew. I'll make sure we check emails constantly and follow up with the financial aid offices.

To answer your timing question from earlier - most schools will send out financial aid packages 3-4 weeks after receiving the FAFSA, assuming no verification is needed. Since May 1st is the standard decision deadline, schools are usually good about getting packages out by early-mid April at the latest. Regarding the Pell Grant specifically - once awarded, the funds will be applied directly to his student account at the beginning of each semester. If there's money left over after tuition and fees are paid, the remaining amount will be refunded to him for books, supplies, and living expenses.

•Thank you! That timeline helps a lot. I'm glad to hear there might be some funds left over for books and supplies - those costs really add up!

Wait im confused about something. You mentioned your son's SAI is 1330 but then said the FAFSA confirmation shows eligibility for Pell up to $6,895. Are you sure thats what it says? My daughter's SAI was 1800 last year and she only got about $5,000 in Pell. I thought the lower your SAI, the more Pell you get? Maybe the amounts changed for this year?

•You're right to question this. The Pell Grant amounts are adjusted yearly. For the 2025-2026 academic year, the maximum Pell increased to $6,895, and the eligibility thresholds were expanded. With an SAI of 1330, the student would qualify for very close to the maximum, but likely around $6,500-$6,700 rather than the full $6,895 (which is typically reserved for an SAI of 0). The exact amount is determined by a sliding scale.

•Thank you for asking this! I might have misunderstood what the confirmation page was showing. It listed the maximum amount, but from what the financial aid expert is saying, my son will get slightly less than the maximum. Still, it's a huge help compared to last year when we didn't qualify at all.

one more thing - make sure ur son enrolls full-time (usually 12+ credits per semester) or the pell gets reduced proportionally. my brother only took 9 credits his first semester and only got 75% of his pell grant. they dont tell u this stuff upfront!!

•Oh! I had no idea about this! He's planning to go full-time, but that's really important information to know. Thank you!
