Does FAFSA send results to ALL schools or just the first one listed in Michigan?
Hi everyone! I'm helping my daughter fill out her FAFSA for next year and I'm super confused about how the school selection works. Does anyone know if FAFSA sends the SAI results to ALL the schools we list on the application or just the first one? I've been reading conflicting info online - some sites say they send to all schools, others say it depends on your state? We're in Michigan if that matters. My daughter is applying to 6 different schools and I want to make sure they all get her financial info without us having to resubmit anything. Thanks in advance for any help!

Your FAFSA results (the SAI calculation) will be sent to ALL schools you list on the application, not just the first one. This is true in every state including Michigan. The system allows you to list up to 10 schools on the online application. If your daughter needs to add more than 10 schools, you'll need to wait until the FAFSA is processed, then remove some schools and add new ones. The schools you remove will still have access to her processed FAFSA data. Hope this helps!

•Thank you SO much! That's exactly what I needed to know. The college advisor at her high school mentioned something about it being different in some states which is what confused me. Really appreciate the clear answer!

actualy it only sends to the first 4 schools in michigan. my son had this problem last year when he applied. the other schools never got his info and we had to call each one individually. its a total mess!!!

•That's not accurate information. The federal FAFSA system sends results to all schools listed (up to 10 on the online form) regardless of which state you're in. Perhaps your son experienced a technical glitch or the schools had trouble accessing the information, but that's not how the system is designed to work.

As someone who works in financial aid, I can confirm that your FAFSA information is sent to ALL the schools you list (up to 10 online, 4 on paper forms). This hasn't changed and is the same across all states. What sometimes happens is that schools have trouble accessing the data or there's a processing delay. If some schools say they haven't received it, double-check that: 1. You correctly entered the school codes 2. The FAFSA is fully processed (not just submitted) 3. You've waited at least 3-5 business days after processing If there are still issues, you might need to contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center directly, which can be frustrating since their phone lines are often jammed.

•This is incredibly helpful! I definitely entered all the school codes correctly, but I'll make sure to give it a few days after we submit before checking with the schools. Thanks for explaining everything so clearly.

my daughter did her fafsa last month and we found out that even though it SAYS it sends to 10 schools, 3 of her schools never got the information. spent hours on hold with fafsa people trying to figure it out. such a headache!!!

•Did you confirm with those schools that they couldn't find her FAFSA using both her name AND Social Security Number? Sometimes schools have trouble matching records if there are slight differences in how her name is entered across systems. Also, not all schools import FAFSA data daily - some smaller institutions only process FAFSA data weekly.

If you're trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid to confirm your FAFSA was sent to all your schools, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in the same situation last month - super stressed about whether all my son's schools received his information. Spent hours trying to get through on the regular FSA phone line with no luck. My neighbor told me about Claimyr and it was actually really helpful - they got me through to a real person within minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video demo of how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent I spoke with confirmed all 7 schools my son listed had access to his FAFSA data. Saved me so much stress!

•I've never heard of that service before! I'll definitely check it out if we run into any issues. The wait times when calling FSA are definitely frustrating.

•is that service legit? sounds kinda sketchy to me...

•It's definitely legit - they just hold your place in line and call you when they get a real person. Worked perfectly for me but obviously do your own research.

Side note but make sure you keep track of exactly which schools you list and in what order!!! Some state grants in Michigan (like the MCS) will ONLY go to the first Michigan school you list on FAFSA. So the order can matter for state aid even though all schools get the federal results.

•Oh wow, I had no idea! Thank you for mentioning this. She has 3 Michigan schools on her list so I'll make sure the one she's most interested in is listed first. That's probably what the guidance counselor was trying to tell us but didn't explain very well.

Just to add one more thing that sometimes causes confusion: The CSS Profile (which some private colleges require in addition to FAFSA) is different - you have to pay for each school you send it to. But the FAFSA itself goes to all listed schools at no cost.

•Thank you for clarifying! She does have a couple private schools that require the CSS Profile so we'll handle those separately.

FAFSA is SO FRUSTRATING this year with all the changes!!! We had to submit my daughter's 3 times because of errors. Make sure you double check all the school codes - my daughter accidentally put one wrong digit for one school and they never got her info. Took us weeks to figure out the problem!
