Can't access FAFSA contributor section after invitation - stuck with 'grayed out' invite
Freaking out a bit here. I helped my son complete his portion of the FAFSA yesterday (yay!), then used the 'invite contributors' feature to add myself and my husband as contributors for our financial information. But now I'm completely stuck! When I log into studentaid.gov with my own FSA ID, I can see the invitation was sent (it's grayed out), but there's literally nothing I can click on to actually complete our contributor section. Am I missing something obvious? The deadline for his scholarship consideration is in 2 weeks and I'm starting to panic that we won't get the parental contribution part done in time. Has anyone else had this problem with contributor invites not working properly? Help!

•Yes, I got the email notification that I was invited, but when I click the link it just takes me to the studentaid.gov login. After logging in, I still don't see anywhere to actually complete the contributor section! Just that grayed out 'invite sent' status.

This is actually a common issue with the new FAFSA. When you and your husband received the contributor invitations, you each need to create your OWN separate FSA IDs if you don't already have them. Then, you need to log in using those specific FSA IDs (not your daughter's) and navigate to the 'To Do' section on your dashboard. That's where the contributor form should appear. If you're logging in with the correct FSA ID and still don't see it, try clearing your browser cache and using a different browser. Sometimes the FAFSA portal has display issues with certain browsers.

•Thank you! I do have my own FSA ID (created it last week), and that's what I'm using to log in. The weird thing is I don't see anything in my 'To Do' section either! It's completely empty. Maybe I should try a different browser like you suggested...

I had the exact same problem last month with my twins' applications. It turned out that when I created my FSA ID, I accidentally used a slightly different email than the one my daughter entered when sending the invitation (I have several email addresses I use). Double-check that the email on your FSA ID exactly matches the email your daughter entered when sending the invitation. If there's any discrepancy, the system won't connect them. If that's not it, sometimes logging out completely, waiting about 30 minutes, and logging back in will refresh the connection. The system sometimes takes time to process the invitation properly.

•That's a great point about the email! I just checked and the emails do match exactly. I'll try logging out and waiting like you suggested. It's just so stressful with the deadline approaching!

Ugh the FAFSA contributor system is SO BROKEN this year!!! I literally had to call FSA 6 DIFFERENT TIMES to get our contributor section working for my son's application!!! Every time I called I waited at least 2 hours only to get disconnected or told different information each time!!!! It's RIDICULOUS how bad they messed up the rollout of this "simplified" FAFSA!!!

•That sounds awful! Did you eventually get it fixed? I'm worried we're going to miss the scholarship deadline if I can't figure this out soon.

When I helped with my nephew's FAFSA last month, we had a similar issue. What fixed it for us was having my nephew (the student) log back into his FAFSA and check the status of the invitations. There was actually an error with how they were sent, but it only showed up on his end, not ours. He had to cancel the original invites and resend them. Worth a shot!

•I hadn't thought of that! I'll have my son log in tonight when he gets home from practice and check if there's any error message on his side. Thanks for the suggestion!

If none of these suggestions work, you might need to contact Federal Student Aid directly. I know calling them can be a nightmare with the wait times, but I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me skip the wait when I had a similar issue. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. It got me through to a live agent in about 10 minutes instead of waiting for hours. The agent was able to manually fix the contributor issue on my end.

Have you tried accessing from the mobile app instead of the website? Sometimes the contributor section works better there! Also, double check that your daughter completed ALL of her sections first - if there's any incomplete part on her end, it might not fully activate the contributor access even though the invite shows as sent. The new FAFSA is super particular about the exact order of operations.

•I didn't even know there was a mobile app! I'll download that right now and see if it works better. And yes, my son did complete all his sections - at least that's what he told me! I'll have him verify that tonight too just to be sure.

Any updates? Were you able to get it working? I'm curious which solution ended up fixing it for you.

•Yes! Finally figured it out. Turns out my son hadn't actually fully completed his section like he thought - there was one page about school selection he had skipped. Once he finished that part, the contributor section immediately became available when I logged in. Classic case of teenager not reading instructions fully! 🤦♀️ Thanks everyone for your help!

So glad you got it figured out! This is actually a really common issue - I've seen this happen with so many families where the student thinks they're "done" but there's still a section or two incomplete. The FAFSA system is really picky about having everything 100% finished before it releases the contributor access. Your experience will definitely help other parents who run into the same problem. Thanks for updating us with the solution!

•This is such a relief to read! I'm actually dealing with a similar issue right now with my daughter's FAFSA - the contributor invite has been sitting there for days and I was starting to panic. I'm going to have her double-check that she really completed everything on her end before I stress out any more. It's so easy for students to miss those little details when they're rushing through it. Thanks for sharing what worked - this gives me hope I can get it sorted out without having to call the help line!
