Can I delete my pending FAFSA application to add husband's signature with new account?

I'm stuck with my 2025-2026 FAFSA application and getting really frustrated! It's showing as 'pending for correction' but the status hasn't changed for over a week. The main issue is that I need my husband's signature, but I realized he needs his own FSA ID account. Rather than waiting for this application to process, can I just delete everything and start over? Will that mess anything up? Has anyone successfully deleted a pending application to restart from scratch? I just want to get this submitted correctly before priority deadlines!

You actually *can't* delete a FAFSA application once it's been submitted, even if it's pending corrections. What you need to do is: 1) Have your husband create his own FSA ID account at studentaid.gov 2) Once he has his FSA ID, he can log in separately and electronically sign your existing application 3) After he signs, the status should update within 3-5 business days No need to start over! The system is designed to handle this exact situation.

Really?? That's a relief! The FSA website is so confusing. So even though it says "pending correction," my husband can still sign it with his new account? Will it ask him for the same information I already entered or just the signature?

I had the EXACT same problem last month!!! my bf and I both had to have accounts. don't delete anything or you'll have to redo all the tax info again which is a PAIN

Ughhh I'm just worried because it's been stuck at "pending correction" for 8 days now with no change. Did yours take a while to process too?

I'm sorry you're having trouble! The "pending correction" status actually means the system is waiting for something - in this case, your husband's signature. Here's what to do: 1. Have your husband create his FSA ID at studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account 2. He'll need his SSN, email, and phone number 3. Have him log in separately and go to "FAFSA Corrections" 4. Find your application and add his signature This is actually very common for married applicants. The system expects separate accounts for security purposes.

Thank you so much for the detailed steps! We'll try this tonight. I was panicking because our school's priority deadline is coming up soon. Hopefully this fixes it!

You should never share FSA ID credentials - each person needs their own account with their own email. Using one account for both spouses can create serious problems later and might even be considered misrepresentation. The system needs separate digital signatures for verification purposes.

If you've been waiting more than a week with no status change, it might be worth calling Federal Student Aid directly. I had a similar issue last year and spent hours trying to reach someone. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - they have a service that calls and waits on hold for you, then connects you when an agent is available. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent was able to look at my application status in real-time and give me specific instructions for my situation. Saved me tons of frustration!

Thanks for suggesting this! If creating the new account doesn't work, I'll definitely try this service. The FAFSA hotline has been impossible to get through to.

The SAME THING happened to me last month!!!! SO FRUSTRATING!!!! The FSA system is GARBAGE! I spent 4 hours on the phone and they STILL couldn't fix it! Had to go to the financial aid office at my kid's college for help.

omg that sounds awful!! did they end up fixing it for you? our financial aid office said they couldn't help with FAFSA account issues

Just to clarify an important point - there's a difference between "deleting" and "starting over." You can't delete a submitted FAFSA, but if your application truly hasn't been processed yet (just pending), you CAN start a new application. However, this creates confusion in the system and can delay your aid determination. The proper procedure is to have your husband create his own FSA ID and then log in to sign your existing application. The Department of Education improved this process for the 2025-2026 FAFSA specifically to handle contributor signatures better.

Thank you for clarifying! I'll definitely have my husband create his own account rather than try to start over. I just wasn't sure if the "pending correction" status meant it was too late to add his signature.

Just checking in - were you able to get your husband's FSA ID created and his signature added to your application?

Yes! It worked! We created his FSA ID (took about 15 minutes) and then he was able to log in and add his signature to my existing application. The status changed to "Processing" within 24 hours. Thanks everyone for your help!
