Can I add or remove schools after submitting my FAFSA? Need urgent advice!

I just submitted my FAFSA for 2025-2026 last night and realized I completely forgot to add two schools I'm applying to! The website said it was 'processed' already. Am I totally screwed now? Can I still add these schools somehow or do I have to start all over again? My mom is freaking out because one of those schools has a scholarship deadline next month that requires FAFSA submission. Anyone know if there's a way to edit my school list after submitting??

You're definitely not screwed! You can absolutely add schools after submitting your FAFSA. Just log back into studentaid.gov, select the 2025-2026 form, and click on 'Make FAFSA Corrections.' You'll be able to add or remove schools from your list without restarting the whole application. The schools you add will receive your information within 3-5 business days typically. Your mom can relax - this won't affect scholarship eligibility as long as the schools receive your FAFSA before their deadline.

Omg thank you!! I was literally having a panic attack about this. Do you know if I need my FSA ID again to make the changes? I had to reset mine like 3 times during the application process and I'm scared I'll get locked out again.

Thanks! Did it take long for the new schools to get your info after you added them?

Adding schools is easy, but there's one important thing to know: you can only list 10 schools total on your FAFSA at one time. If you already have 10 and need to add more, you'll need to remove some first, then wait until your information is processed by those first schools (about a week), then add the new ones. The key is making sure all your priority schools get your info before their deadlines. Also, remember that the order you list schools CAN matter for state aid in some states (though not for federal aid). Some states give preference to schools listed first. What state are you in?

I'm in Michigan. I only had 8 schools on there so that's good to know about the 10 school limit! I didn't realize the order mattered for some states - should I rearrange mine too?

For Michigan specifically, the order doesn't impact state aid eligibility. You're good to just add the two schools without worrying about rearranging the order. Just make sure you submit the corrections well before that scholarship deadline!

I had the EXACT same issue last year and tried calling FSA to fix it. Spent HOURS on hold and kept getting disconnected. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual person at Federal Student Aid. Their service connects you with agents without the crazy wait. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. The agent was able to confirm my schools were added correctly and explained that certain state grants have different requirements for school listing. Saved me so much stress since I was worried about missing scholarship deadlines too.

is that service legit? seems weird to pay someone just to make a phone call for u

It's definitely legit. They don't make the call for you - they get you through the hold time so you can talk to an agent yourself. I was skeptical too but after waiting on hold for 3+ hours and getting disconnected twice, it was worth it to actually speak with someone who could verify my changes went through properly.

BE CAREFUL when making corrections!!!! i tried to add schools last year and accidentally changed some of my financial info WITHOUT REALIZING IT and got selected for verification which delayed my aid for MONTHS!!! triple check EVERYTHING before you submit any changes and take screenshots of what you change. the whole system is designed to trap you into making mistakes i swear

Oh wow that's scary!! Thanks for the warning - I'll be super careful and only touch the schools section. Did you eventually get your aid sorted out?

yeah but i had to submit like 20 different documents and my first disbursement was delayed until october. they made me verify EVERYTHING - tax returns, bank statements, even my parents divorce decree from 10 years ago!!! just be super careful when you make any changes

Wait theres a limit to how many schools you can add? Nobody told me that when I did my FAFSA. I only added 3 schools cause those were the ones I knew for sure. Can I really add up to 10? What happens if you apply to more than 10?

Yes, the FAFSA limits you to 10 schools at any one time. If you're applying to more than 10 schools, you'll need to use the strategy of adding your first 10, waiting for your information to be processed (about a week), then removing some schools and adding others. The schools you remove will still have your FAFSA data - removing them just frees up space on your list. This is one reason it's good to submit FAFSA early if you're applying to many schools!

Update: I was able to add the two schools! The correction was really easy - just logged in with my FSA ID and only edited the schools list. It let me search by state and school name. Thank you everyone for the help! I'll wait a few days and then check with the financial aid offices to make sure they received my info before the scholarship deadline.

nice! schools get the info pretty fast now. my cousins at UMich and said they got his fafsa in like 2 days when he did it

That's reassuring! One of the schools I added was actually Michigan State so hopefully they'll get it quickly too!

One more helpful tip - always save the confirmation page when you make FAFSA corrections. Take a screenshot showing the date and time you made the changes. If there's ever a dispute about whether you met a deadline, that proof can be critical. I've seen students run into issues where a school claimed they didn't receive the FAFSA in time, but having that confirmation documentation resolved it immediately.

That's smart advice! I just went back and took screenshots of my confirmation page with the timestamp. Better safe than sorry!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm a junior starting to research the FAFSA process for next year and had no idea you could make corrections after submitting. This gives me so much peace of mind knowing I won't be stuck if I forget a school or change my mind about where to apply. Quick question - is there a deadline for when you can no longer make these corrections? Like, can you keep adding schools throughout the entire academic year or is there a cutoff point?

Great question! You can make corrections to your FAFSA throughout most of the academic year, but there are some important deadlines to keep in mind. The federal deadline for the 2025-26 FAFSA is June 30, 2026, but individual schools and states often have much earlier deadlines - some as early as February or March. So while you CAN technically keep making corrections until that federal deadline, you'll want to make sure you add schools well before their individual priority deadlines to be eligible for institutional aid and scholarships. It's definitely smart that you're researching this early as a junior!

As someone who went through this exact panic last year, I can confirm everything everyone said is accurate! Just wanted to add one more tip - when you log in to make corrections, the system will ask you to review ALL sections of your FAFSA again, but you only need to actually change the schools section. Don't let the interface confuse you into thinking you need to re-enter everything. Also, once you submit the corrections, you'll get a new Student Aid Report (SAR) within a few days. Keep an eye out for that email confirmation as it will show your updated school list. The relief you'll feel when you see those two new schools listed is amazing! Good luck with your applications and scholarships!

This is exactly what I needed to hear! I'm definitely bookmarking this thread for when I fill out my FAFSA next year. The tip about only changing the schools section and not getting confused by the interface reviewing everything is super helpful - I can totally see myself overthinking that and accidentally messing something up. Thanks for sharing your experience and for the heads up about the new SAR email. It's so reassuring to know that this "mistake" is actually pretty common and totally fixable!

Just wanted to jump in as someone who's been helping students with FAFSA for years - you all have given excellent advice! One thing I'd add for future reference is that when you're making corrections, the system will show you a summary page before you submit. Always double-check that summary to make sure only the changes you intended are reflected. Also, if you're ever unsure whether your corrections went through properly, you can always log back in a day or two later to verify your school list is correct. The peace of mind is worth the extra check! It's great to see this community helping each other navigate these stressful financial aid processes.

Thank you so much for jumping in with that advice! As someone new to this whole FAFSA process, it's really helpful to hear from someone with experience helping students. The tip about checking the summary page before submitting is something I definitely wouldn't have thought of - I can see myself being so relieved to finally make the corrections that I'd just click submit without double-checking everything. And you're absolutely right about logging back in to verify - better to check twice than wonder if something went wrong! It's amazing how supportive this community is. I was feeling so overwhelmed about starting the college application process, but seeing how everyone helped Chloe and shared their experiences makes me feel much more confident about tackling my FAFSA next year.

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm a parent going through this process with my daughter for the first time, and I had no idea corrections were even possible after submitting. We submitted her FAFSA two weeks ago and just realized we forgot to include her safety school that offers automatic merit aid based on FAFSA submission. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been so reassuring - especially knowing that the process is straightforward and schools receive the information quickly. I'm definitely going to have her take screenshots of the confirmation page as suggested, and we'll make sure to verify with the school's financial aid office once they receive her information. Thank you all for sharing your knowledge and helping ease the anxiety that comes with this whole process!

Welcome to the FAFSA correction club! As a fellow parent who went through this exact scenario last year, I totally understand that initial panic when you realize you've forgotten a school. The automatic merit aid based on FAFSA submission is actually pretty common, so you're smart to catch this now. One thing I learned is that safety schools often have later deadlines than reach schools, but it's still good to get your daughter's information to them ASAP. The screenshot advice is golden - I wish I had thought of that when we were going through this process. Also, don't hesitate to call the safety school's financial aid office directly once the correction is submitted. They're usually very helpful and can confirm when they receive the FAFSA data. Good luck to you and your daughter!

I'm so glad I found this thread! I'm actually dealing with a similar situation right now - I submitted my FAFSA last week and just got accepted to a school I didn't think I had a chance at, so I need to add them to my list. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful, especially the warnings about being careful not to accidentally change other sections when making corrections. It's also reassuring to know that the 3-5 day processing time is pretty reliable. Quick question for anyone who's done this recently - when you log in to make corrections, does the system make you verify your identity again with security questions, or can you just use your FSA ID? I'm always paranoid about getting locked out of my account!

Congrats on getting accepted to that reach school! That's so exciting! To answer your question - when I made corrections to my FAFSA recently, I just needed my FSA ID to log in, no additional security questions or verification steps. The system took me straight to the correction page once I selected my 2025-26 form. Just make sure you have your FSA ID username and password handy, and you should be good to go. The whole process was way less complicated than I expected it to be. Good luck adding your new school!
