Both parents' signatures required for FAFSA? Husband already submitted info

I'm so confused right now! My husband received an email from the Department of Education inviting him to submit information for our daughter's FAFSA. He went ahead and completed everything on his own yesterday. But now I'm wondering - do I need to sign something too? The email only went to his address, not mine. I'm worried our daughter's application will be incomplete if I don't add my signature somewhere. Has anyone dealt with this? Do both parents need to sign the FAFSA even if only one gets the email invitation?

Wait are you the parent or the student? If ur the student you don't need to sign anything if your parents did it already. If ur both parents then yeah, both contributing parents living in the same household need to sign the FAFSA. My parents had to do this last yr.

Sorry if I wasn't clear! I'm the mom/parent. So even though my husband got the email and already submitted his part, I still need to sign it too?

Yes, if you're both in the same household and contributing to the student's finances, then both parents need to sign the FAFSA. The new 2025-2026 FAFSA requires all contributors to create their own FSA ID and sign separately. Your husband should have received instructions at the end of his submission about adding you as a contributor. Check your email - you might have received a separate invitation after he completed his part.

Thank you! I just checked and don't see anything in my inbox or spam folder. Is there a way for me to sign without waiting for an email? Our daughter is stressing because her college says the FAFSA isn't complete yet.

The same thing happened to us! The dad (my husband) got the invitation first, then nothing for me for like 5 days, then suddenly I got a separate email. Check the studentaid.gov site directly - you might be able to see if you're listed as a contributor there.

That's reassuring to hear! I'll check the website. Did your daughter's aid get delayed because of this?

It took about 3 extra weeks to get everything processed because of the delay, but it worked out fine in the end. Just keep checking daily!

Financial aid advisor here. For the 2025-2026 FAFSA, all contributors (typically both parents in a married household) must provide their information and sign separately using their own FSA IDs. The process typically works like this: 1. Student creates FSA ID and starts application 2. Student identifies contributors (parents) 3. Each contributor receives email invitation 4. Contributors complete their sections 5. All parties sign If your husband completed his section but you haven't received an invitation, here's what to do: - Have your student log into studentaid.gov and check if the application shows as "Missing signatures" - Your student can resend contributor invitations from their portal - Make sure your correct email is listed - Create your own FSA ID if you don't already have one The system sometimes staggers the invitations to prevent technical overloads, so yours might arrive in a few days. But it's best to be proactive rather than waiting.

This is incredibly helpful! I didn't realize I need my own FSA ID. I'll get that set up today and ask my daughter to check her portal to see if she can resend my invitation. Thank you so much!

I HATE the new FAFSA system!!!! My husband got his invitation right away but mine took TWO WEEKS to arrive. Then the system kept crashing when I tried to fill it out. My son almost missed his priority deadline because of this garbage process. And when I called the help number? 2+ hours on hold only to get disconnected!!

I had the same nightmare with the hold times trying to reach FSA. After my third disconnection, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me so much frustration! They have a video demo of how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Worth checking out if you need to call FSA again about signature issues.

The same situation happened with my wife and me. I got the invitation first and completed everything. Then about 4 days later, she got her invitation. The trick is to make sure both email addresses are correct in the student's portion of the application. If your daughter entered your email correctly, you'll eventually get the invitation. The system just takes time to send them all out.

That's good to know! I just talked to my daughter and she confirmed she entered my email correctly. I guess I'll just need to be patient. Did your SAI score get calculated only after both of you signed?

0 coins

Exactly - they won't calculate the final SAI until all required signatures are in place. Once my wife signed (the last one needed), we got the SAI about 3 days later. Just make sure you sign as soon as you get the invitation to avoid further delays.

hey just wondering - did ur husband enter ur info (like ur SSN and income) when he did his part? Or was he just doing his own information? My husband and I are trying to figure out if we do our sections separately or if one of us puts in everything.

Each contributor should only enter their own information. The new FAFSA is designed so each person provides and certifies their own data separately. This is for security and accuracy reasons - having one spouse enter the other's SSN and financial details goes against the verification process.

my cousins FAFSA got delayed for like 2 months bc his dad thought he did everything but actually the mom never signed it and they didn't realize until the school told him his aid package was on hold!! check with ur daughter's school financial aid office they can sometimes see exactly whats missing

That's a good idea! I'll have her contact the financial aid office tomorrow to see if they can tell us exactly what's missing. I definitely don't want to delay her aid package.
