Will I lose my ESD benefits if I stop claiming during prepaid vacation?
I just found out I have a 2-week prepaid vacation coming up (was booked before I lost my job). I've been receiving unemployment benefits for about 2 months now. If I stop filing weekly claims during my vacation time, will my claim get closed? Can I just start claiming again when I get back, or will I need to file a whole new application? Really worried about losing my benefits completely since finding a job has been harder than expected.

You can stop claiming for those 2 weeks and resume when you get back! Your claim stays active for a year from when you first filed. Just start filing weekly claims again when you return. You might need to answer a question about why you didn't claim for those weeks, just be honest about the vacation.

•That's a relief! Do I need to notify ESD before I leave or just stop filing? I'm worried they'll think I found a job and close everything out.

You actually should still file your weekly claims during your vacation, but report that you were not available for work those weeks. According to ESD rules, you must maintain an active claim by filing weekly, even for weeks you're not eligible. This prevents your claim from becoming inactive. When you return, you can resume reporting as available for work.

•This is what I did last summer!! I went to Hawaii for 10 days and still filed but just said I wasnt available.... then when I got back I just checked the yes box for available again and everything was fine!!!

WRONG INFORMATION ABOVE!!! If you file and say you're not available, you'll be DISQUALIFIED for those weeks. If you're on vacation, you are NOT able and available for work which is a REQUIREMENT for benefits. Just don't file for those 2 weeks and pick up where you left off when you return. Your claim stays open for 12 months from the date you first filed!!!!!

•That's not entirely accurate. The best practice is to continue filing weekly claims even when on vacation, but honestly report you're not available for work. Yes, you won't get benefits for those weeks, but it keeps your claim active in the system. You're right that the claim stays open for the benefit year, but maintaining activity on the claim reduces complications. Either approach works, though.

my brother had this same thing happen last October! he just stopped claiming for 3 weeks (not just 2) and then started claiming again when he got back. no problems at all, the esd website let him file normally when he returned.

I work at a staffing agency and deal with this question frequently. Here's the official answer: Your claim remains open for your benefit year (52 weeks from when you applied). You have two options: 1) Don't file for those two weeks, then resume when you return 2) File but report you weren't available for work Both are acceptable. Option 1 is simpler. Option 2 creates a paper trail. Either way, you won't receive benefits for those two vacation weeks, but your claim will remain active.

•Thank you! This is really helpful. I think I'll go with option 1 since it seems simpler. Just to be sure - when I file again after my vacation, the system won't ask me for any special documentation about why I skipped those weeks?

The system might ask why you didn't file for those weeks when you resume filing. Just answer honestly that you were on a prepaid vacation. Make sure you continue your job search activities as soon as you return (3 per week). Also, keep in mind that if you have any adjudication issues pending, those might still be processed while you're away, so check your ESD account occasionally if possible.

•Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an ESD agent. It basically calls repeatedly for you and connects when someone answers. Saved me hours of frustration when I had an adjudication issue last month. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. Much better than trying to get through on your own, especially for urgent questions like OP's vacation situation.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I'll stop filing for those two weeks and then resume when I get back. Good to know my claim will stay active. Really appreciate all the helpful responses!

•Enjoy your vacation! Don't stress about unemployment while you're away - it'll be there when you get back. Just remember to start your weekly claims right when you return.

•Going to visit family in Colorado. It was booked and paid for before I lost my job - otherwise I definitely wouldn't be taking a vacation right now!
