When will I get my Washington ESD unemployment tax refund - still waiting
Filed my taxes back in February and I'm still waiting on my unemployment tax refund from Washington ESD. I had about $2,800 in unemployment benefits last year and paid taxes on all of it, but now I'm hearing some people got refunds automatically? My tax preparer said it could take months but didn't give me a clear timeline. Has anyone actually received their unemployment tax refund yet? I really need this money to catch up on some bills.

Same boat here - filed in March and nothing yet. Called the IRS twice and they just said 'processing delays' with no real timeline.

•At least you got through to someone! I've been on hold for hours every time I try calling.

•The IRS phone lines are absolutely swamped right now. Most people are waiting 3-6 months for unemployment tax refunds.

You need to understand this isn't actually coming from Washington ESD - it's a federal tax refund from the IRS. The American Rescue Plan Act made the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits tax-free for 2020, so if you already filed and paid taxes on that income, you're due a refund.

•Oh I didn't realize it was federal! That explains why calling Washington ESD didn't help. So this is totally separate from my regular UI benefits?

Kiara Fisherman
•Exactly - Washington ESD has nothing to do with tax refunds. This is purely between you and the IRS based on the tax law change.

I've been tracking this obsessively and from what I can tell, the IRS is processing these in batches based on when you filed. Early filers from January-February are just starting to see refunds now in batches.

•That's helpful to know! I filed in late February so maybe I'm in the next batch. Did you find this info on the IRS website?

•Mostly from tax forums and some IRS updates. They're being super vague about timelines but the pattern seems to be 4-6 months from filing date.

If you're having trouble getting through to the IRS about your refund status, I found this service called Claimyr that actually helps people get through to government agencies by phone. They have a demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Might be worth checking out claimyr.com since the IRS lines are so jammed.

•Never heard of that but at this point I'm willing to try anything. The hold times are killing me.

•Isn't there a fee for services like that though? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay extra just to talk to the government.

•I mean, your time has value too. If you're spending hours on hold every day, sometimes it's worth it to get through faster.

•How much did you end up getting back? Trying to figure out if the amount I'm expecting is realistic.

•around $1400 which was about right for what i paid in taxes on unemployment. yours will depend on your tax bracket

The IRS Where's My Refund tool has been showing 'processing' for months now. It's beyond frustrating because you can't get any real information about when it might actually arrive.

•That tool isn't very helpful for these unemployment tax refunds unfortunately. The IRS is manually reviewing most of these cases.

•Manual review explains why it's taking forever. They probably have thousands of people doing this work.

I heard some people who used TurboTax or H&R Block are getting theirs faster because those companies submitted the returns in a certain format. Not sure if that's true though.

•I don't think the tax software matters much for processing speed. The IRS is processing these based on their own internal systems.

•I used TurboTax and still waiting, so probably doesn't make a difference.

This whole thing is such a mess. They change the tax law after most people already filed, then take forever to process the refunds. Meanwhile people are struggling financially.

Liam Cortez
•Totally agree. The timing of this law change was terrible - should have been sorted out before tax season started.

•At least they're giving refunds at all. Could have been worse if they just left everyone who already paid hanging.

Check your bank account regularly even if the IRS tool isn't updating. Mine showed up as a direct deposit without any warning or status change online.

•Good point - I'll start checking my account daily instead of just relying on the IRS website.

•Same thing happened to me - just appeared in my account one day with no advance notice

If you're really desperate to get through to the IRS, I actually used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. Got through in like 20 minutes instead of waiting hours. They helped me get my refund status sorted out.

Kylo Ren
•Did they actually help you get useful information or just get you through to someone?

•They got me through to an actual IRS agent who could look up my specific case and give me a real timeline. Way better than the generic responses.

has anyone tried calling the taxpayer advocate service? i heard they can help with delayed refunds

Kiara Fisherman
•The Taxpayer Advocate Service is for serious hardship cases usually. You'd need to show the delay is causing significant financial hardship.

•Good to know that's an option if this drags on much longer. Bills are definitely piling up.

I've been tracking posts on Reddit and other forums - seems like people who filed in January are getting theirs now, February filers should be next month, March filers maybe by fall. Just based on patterns I've seen.

Liam Cortez
•That matches what I've been seeing too. It's like they're working through filing dates chronologically.

Kylo Ren
•So potentially still 2-3 more months for me since I filed in February. Better than nothing I guess.

Make sure you didn't make any mistakes on your return that could slow things down. Any errors or missing info can push you to the back of the line.

•I used a tax preparer so hopefully everything was done correctly. But how would I even know if there were errors?

Sophie Duck
•Usually the IRS would send you a letter if there were issues, but with these delays who knows. Check your mail carefully.

just be patient everyone - these government agencies move slow but the money will come eventually. i know its frustrating but stressing wont make it faster

For what it's worth, everyone I know who has received their unemployment tax refund so far got the full amount they were expecting. So at least the IRS seems to be calculating these correctly.

Kylo Ren
•That's reassuring! I was worried they might short people or make calculation errors with all the rushed processing.

•mine was exactly what my tax software calculated so they seem to be getting the math right

I called my congressman's office about this and they said they're getting tons of calls about delayed unemployment tax refunds. Might be worth contacting your representatives too.

•They opened a case with the IRS on my behalf. Haven't heard back yet but at least someone official is tracking my situation now.

Bottom line: this is a federal tax issue, not a Washington ESD unemployment issue. The refunds are coming but the IRS is severely backlogged. If you filed in early 2021, you should see yours within the next month or two based on current processing patterns.

Kylo Ren
•Thanks for clarifying that distinction. I was getting confused about who was responsible for what.

•Wish they'd been clearer about this from the start. A lot of people are calling the wrong agencies.

anyone know if there's interest being paid on these delayed refunds? seems like we should get something for the government holding our money this long
0 coins
Kiara Fisherman
•The IRS does pay interest on refunds that are delayed beyond their normal processing time, but I'm not sure if that applies to these unemployment tax refunds.
0 coins
Jason Brewer
•From what I've read, these don't qualify for interest payments because they're considered 'amended returns' even though you didn't file an amendment.

Got mine yesterday! Filed January 28th and it was direct deposited. $1,832 which was exactly what I calculated. There's hope everyone!
