Washington ESD max unemployment benefit amount 2024 - did anyone else get the increase?
Just curious what the maximum weekly unemployment benefit is in Washington state for 2024? I think I saw something about it going up but I want to make sure I'm getting the right amount. My claim shows $999 per week but that seems really high compared to what I was getting a few years ago. Anyone know if that's actually the max or if there's an error with my claim?

Yes, $999 is correct for 2024. Washington ESD increased the maximum weekly benefit amount from $929 in 2023. It's calculated based on the state average weekly wage, so it goes up most years. If you're seeing $999 on your account, that means your earnings qualify you for the maximum benefit.

•Thanks! I was worried there was some mistake. Good to know it actually went up that much.

•wow that's a lot more than I'm getting, mine is only like $650

The $999 max is legit but getting through to Washington ESD to verify anything about your claim is nearly impossible these days. I've been trying to call for weeks about a different issue and can never get through.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found it on claimyr.com and they have this video demo https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. It actually got me connected to an ESD agent when I needed to check my benefit calculation.

•Never heard of that, is it legit? I'm desperate at this point.

•Yeah it's real, they basically handle the calling and waiting for you. Saved me hours of frustration.

Just to clarify - the $999 is the maximum BEFORE taxes. Don't forget Washington ESD will withhold federal taxes if you elected that option when you filed your claim. The actual amount deposited will be less.

•Good point, I did elect to have taxes taken out so that explains why my deposit is less than $999.

•ugh i forgot about taxes, no wonder my deposit seemed low

Lucky you getting the max! I'm only getting $425/week because my previous job didn't pay much. The benefit amount is based on your earnings in your base period, so higher earners get more.

Christian Bierman
•That's correct. Your weekly benefit amount is calculated using your highest quarter earnings in your base period. The minimum is $295 and maximum is $999 for 2024.

•Thanks for explaining that. I wish I had known how the calculation worked before I filed.

does anyone know if the max amount changes during the year or is it set for all of 2024?

Christian Bierman
•It's typically set for the whole benefit year. The state recalculates it annually based on average wages from the previous year.

•ok good to know, thanks

I think I'm getting screwed by the system. My calculation seems wrong and I can't get anyone at Washington ESD on the phone to explain it. Been calling for three weeks straight.

•Try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got through to ESD in like 20 minutes instead of calling all day.

•Really? I'll check it out, getting pretty desperate here.

•Yeah, claimyr.com - they show you exactly how it works in their demo video too.

The whole benefit calculation system is so confusing. I never know if I'm getting the right amount or not.

•You can check your monetary determination letter that Washington ESD sent when your claim was approved. It breaks down exactly how they calculated your weekly benefit amount.

•I think I lost that paperwork, can I get another copy?

Austin Leonard
•Yes, you should be able to access it through your SecureAccess Washington account or request a copy from ESD.

For comparison, I got $847/week when I filed in January 2024. The amount varies based on your specific earnings history, but $999 is definitely the ceiling.

Makayla Shoemaker
•That makes sense. I had a pretty high-paying job before I got laid off so I guess that's why I qualified for the max.

Ruby Blake
•Yeah, you need substantial earnings in your base year to hit the maximum. Consider yourself lucky!

wait is this per week or per month? $999 seems like a lot
0 coins
Christian Bierman
•That's per WEEK. So if you qualify for the maximum, you could receive up to $999 every week while on unemployment, subject to your maximum benefit amount for the year.

Micah Franklin
•wow that's way more than I thought unemployment paid

•Washington has one of the higher unemployment benefits in the country, but the cost of living here is also pretty high.

I'm getting the max too but I'm worried about running out of benefits. How many weeks can you collect at the maximum rate?
0 coins
Christian Bierman
•Regular unemployment benefits in Washington can last up to 26 weeks, regardless of your weekly benefit amount. Your total benefit amount is calculated as your weekly benefit times 26, but it can't exceed 30% of your base period wages.

•Thanks, that helps me plan better.

The system crashed on me when I was trying to file my weekly claim yesterday. Anyone else having technical issues with the Washington ESD website?

•Yeah the site has been glitchy lately. I usually try to file early in the morning when there's less traffic.

Does the $999 max apply to everyone or are there different maximums for different types of claims?
0 coins
Christian Bierman
•The $999 maximum applies to regular unemployment insurance claims. Other programs like standby or workshare might have different calculations, but for standard UI claims, $999 is the weekly max for 2024.

•Got it, thanks for clarifying that.

I remember when the max was like $600 something a few years ago. Glad to see it's keeping up with inflation somewhat.

•Yeah it's definitely gone up over the years. Still not enough to cover what I was making before but better than nothing.

•True, unemployment is supposed to be temporary assistance, not full salary replacement.

If you think your benefit calculation is wrong, you can request a redetermination from Washington ESD. Just be prepared to wait a while for them to review it.

•How long does a redetermination usually take? I think mine might be calculated wrong too.

•In my experience, several weeks to a couple months. The adjudication process takes forever these days.

•That's why I used Claimyr to get through and ask about mine directly. Sometimes talking to someone can clear things up faster than waiting for the formal process.

Just want to confirm - if I'm getting $999/week, that means I qualified for the absolute maximum benefit amount available in Washington state for 2024, right?
0 coins
Christian Bierman
•Correct. $999 is the maximum weekly benefit amount for regular unemployment insurance in Washington for 2024. You're getting the highest amount possible.

For anyone still confused about their benefit amount, the monetary determination letter Washington ESD sends explains exactly how they calculated your weekly and maximum benefit amounts. Keep that paperwork handy!

The $999 max is nice but don't forget you still have to meet all the other requirements - filing weekly claims, job search activities, being available for work, etc. The amount doesn't matter if you get disqualified.
