Starting new job mid-week - still required to do 3 job searches for ESD claim?

FINALLY got a job offer after 3 months of searching! I'm starting this Thursday (tomorrow), but I originally expected to start on Monday which didn't happen because of some paperwork delays on their end. Quick question - if I file my weekly claim for this week, am I still required to complete 3 job search activities even though I've already secured employment? The new position is full-time and permanent. Also trying to figure out if it's even worth claiming for just part of this week. What I'll earn in these 2 days (Thursday/Friday) is pretty close to my weekly unemployment benefit amount of $675. Will ESD deduct what I earn from my benefit? Is there some kind of threshold where it doesn't make sense to claim? Thanks for any advice!

Congratz on the new job!! When I startd my new job last month I still did the 3 job searches even tho I had already accepted the position. Better safe than sorry with ESD, they can be really picky about that stuff. Just did some quick applications online to cover myself.

Thanks! Did you report your earnings for that partial week? I'm wondering if it's even worth filing since I'll only be unemployed for 3 days this week.

You're actually exempt from job search requirements the week you start a new job. When you file your weekly claim, you'll answer "yes" to the question about whether you've returned to full-time work, then it'll ask when you started. For your earnings question: ESD uses a formula where they deduct 75% of your earnings from your weekly benefit. So if you earn $500 in those two days and your weekly benefit is $675, they'd deduct $375 (75% of $500), leaving you with a partial payment of $300. This is why it's usually worth filing for partial weeks unless you earn significantly more than your weekly benefit amount.

wait i thought they take away ur WHOLE benefit if u make more than ur weakly benefit amount??? thats what happened to me last year i think, when i got a part time job

To clarify for everyone: If your earnings are more than your weekly benefit amount, then yes, you receive $0 for that week. But if earnings are less, they use the 75% formula I mentioned. OP, since you said your 2-day earnings will be close to your weekly benefit amount, it might still be worth claiming. Even if you only get a small partial payment, you're still technically an active claim which can be helpful if your new job doesn't work out during the probationary period.

This is super helpful, thank you! I think I'll go ahead and file then. You're right that keeping the claim active makes sense just in case anything falls through with the new position. Fingers crossed it all works out though!

ESD WILL AUDIT YOUR CLAIM NO MATTER WHAT!!! I didn't do job searches for ONE WEEK when I started my job last year and they hit me with an overpayment 6 months later!!! Had to pay back $834 even though I TOLD THEM I was starting a job that week. The system is designed to trip you up!!!!!

That's unusual if you reported you were starting work. Did you answer the job search questions correctly on your weekly claim? The system specifically waives the requirement when you report starting full-time work. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding somewhere in how the questions were answered?

hey when i was having issues with my claim and couldnt get through to esd i used this service called claimyr that connected me to an actual person at esd in like 20 mins. saved me so much time trying to call them nonstop. their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. might be helpful if you need to talk to someone at esd about your specific situation with the partial week and job search stuff

Thanks for the tip! I might check that out if I run into any issues. The ESD phone lines are always such a nightmare.

I'm an employment counselor and can confirm what was mentioned earlier - you are exempt from job search requirements for the week you begin full-time work. Make sure you answer all weekly claim questions accurately, especially about your start date and earnings. Regarding your earnings: When you report the exact amount you earn for Thursday/Friday, the system will automatically calculate if you're eligible for a partial payment. Even if you only receive a small amount, I recommend filing to keep your claim active through the transition. You don't need to do any job searches this week, but make sure you answer the job search question correctly. There's a specific option for "I returned to full-time work" on the job search verification page.

My neighbor had this EXACT same situation and when he said he was starting work, the system just skipped over the job search questions completely. So it's definitely a built-in exemption in their system when you report starting work.

When I got a job last December I didn't bother claiming for that last partial week. Just seemed like too much hassle for probably a small amount of money. But I was also kinda paranoid about accidentally saying something wrong and then getting in trouble later. Just my experience, though maybe I left some money on the table.

I was definitely considering just not filing to avoid any potential headaches. But since my start date was delayed, I've been without income longer than expected, so every bit helps at this point!

One time i had a job that lasted only 2 weeks and i didnt report it cause i thought it wasnt worth the trouble and then they found out through tax stuff and i had to pay back everything plus a penalty. so definately always report everything even if it seems small or not worth it!!

Yikes! That's definitely good to know. I'll make sure to report everything accurately.
