How to stop unemployment benefits - Washington ESD voluntary termination process?
I need to figure out how to stop my unemployment benefits with Washington ESD. I just got a job offer and want to make sure I don't mess anything up by continuing to file weekly claims. Do I just stop filing or is there a formal process to end my claim? I don't want to accidentally create an overpayment situation later on.

You should stop filing your weekly claims immediately once you start working. There's no formal termination process - just don't submit another weekly claim. Make sure you report your last day of unemployment accurately on your final claim.

•That's what I thought but wanted to make sure. So I just stop filing and that's it?

•Exactly. The claim will just go inactive after you stop filing. If you need benefits again later you can reopen it.

Important note - if you worked any hours during your last benefit week, make sure you report those earnings on your final weekly claim. Even if it's just training or orientation hours, report them to avoid overpayment issues later.

•Good point. I start Monday so my last claim would be for this week with no work hours.

•Wait, if he starts Monday doesn't he need to report those hours on next week's claim?

•No, the weekly claim covers Sunday through Saturday. If he starts Monday, those hours get reported on the claim for that week, not the previous one.

I had to stop mine last year when I got hired and it was super confusing trying to reach someone at Washington ESD to confirm I was doing it right. Spent hours on hold just to be told to stop filing. Actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to ESD agents faster - check out claimyr.com if you need to talk to someone. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost though? Seems like you shouldn't have to pay to reach a government agency.

•I get that, but when you're stressed about messing up your benefits it's worth it to get actual confirmation from ESD. Way better than guessing.

Make sure you keep records of when you stopped filing and when you started work. I stopped filing but didn't document it well and had issues later when they questioned my claim history.

•What kind of records should I keep? Screenshots of my account?

•Yeah, screenshot your last filed claim and maybe print your job offer letter showing the start date. Just basic documentation in case questions come up.

•I think they assume it's obvious - stop filing when you don't need benefits anymore. But I agree the website could be clearer about the process.

One thing to be aware of - if this is a temporary job or contract work, you might want to ask Washington ESD about keeping your claim open instead of letting it go inactive. Depends on your situation though.

•It's a permanent full-time position so I should be good to just stop filing.

•Even with permanent jobs things can happen. I kept my claim open for a few weeks just in case during my probation period.

This happened to me too and I panicked thinking I needed to call them. Turns out you literally just stop filing weekly claims and that's it. The Washington ESD system will show your claim as inactive after a few weeks of not filing.

•How long does it take to show as inactive? Mine still shows active even though I haven't filed in 3 weeks.

•I think it takes about a month or so. As long as you're not filing claims you're fine.

Don't forget you might be able to reopen your claim later if needed. I had to do that when my new job didn't work out after 6 months. Just make sure you file within a year of your benefit year ending.

•Good to know! Hopefully won't need it but that's reassuring.

Washington ESD really should send some kind of confirmation when you stop filing claims. Other states do that but Washington just leaves you wondering if you did it right.

•Agreed! The lack of communication from ESD is frustrating. You never know if you're doing things correctly.

I used Claimyr when I had questions about ending my benefits properly. Super helpful to actually talk to an ESD rep instead of guessing. Worth checking out if you want peace of mind.

•Did they confirm you just stop filing? That's what everyone here is saying but official confirmation would be nice.

•Yep, ESD agent confirmed just stop filing weekly claims when you return to full-time work. No other steps needed.

make sure your last weekly claim is accurate about your work search activities too. dont want them coming back later saying you didnt meet requirements on your final claim

•Good point about work search. I always forgot about that requirement until the last minute.

Congratulations on the new job! The process is simple - just stop filing when you start working. I went through the same thing last year and was overthinking it. Washington ESD makes it seem complicated but it's really straightforward.

•You'll do great! Nice to see a success story on here for once instead of everyone complaining about adjudication delays.

I tried calling Washington ESD about this same question and gave up after 2 hours on hold. Ended up using that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through in like 10 minutes. Definitely recommend if you need to actually talk to someone at ESD about stopping benefits.

•10 minutes? That's incredible compared to the usual ESD wait times. Might have to try that next time I have questions.

Just remember to file your final weekly claim for the week you were still unemployed. Don't skip that one thinking you're done - you earned those benefits for that week.

•Right, so file for this week since I was unemployed all week, then don't file next week since I'll be working. Makes sense.
