How much will I get for unemployment benefits in Washington state?

I just got laid off from my job at a tech company in Seattle where I was making $85,000 a year. This is my first time filing for unemployment and I have no idea what to expect for my weekly benefit amount. I tried looking on the Washington ESD website but it's confusing with all the calculations. Does anyone know roughly how much I might get? I'm really stressed about paying my mortgage and bills.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount (WBA) based on your highest earning quarter in your base period. For someone making $85k, you're probably looking at somewhere around $600-800 per week, but it depends on how your earnings were distributed throughout the year.

That would be a huge relief if it's that much. Do you know what the maximum weekly amount is?

0 coins

The maximum weekly benefit amount in Washington is $999 for 2025, but you need pretty high quarterly earnings to hit that cap.

0 coins

i think its like half your regular pay or something but dont quote me on that lol

0 coins

It's not quite that simple. Washington uses a formula based on your base period earnings, not just half your regular salary.

0 coins

oh ok my bad, i was just going off what my friend told me when he got laid off

You'll need to wait for Washington ESD to process your claim and send you a monetary determination letter. That will show your exact weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for. The calculation is based on your earnings in the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you filed.

0 coins

How long does it usually take to get that determination letter?

0 coins

Usually within a week or two if there are no issues with your claim. Make sure you file your weekly claims even while waiting for the determination.

I was in a similar situation last year and had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on my claim status. Ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me from sitting on hold for hours.

0 coins

Never heard of that service before. Did it actually work for you?

0 coins

Yeah, got through to someone in about 20 minutes instead of the usual hours of busy signals. Was worth it just for the peace of mind.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost though? I'm already tight on money.

0 coins

The Washington ESD benefit calculator is buried somewhere on their website but its pretty basic. For $85k annual salary you're probably looking at around $650-750 weekly depending on when you worked and how your pay was structured throughout the base period.

0 coins

I worked the full year consistently so hopefully that helps with the calculation.

0 coins

That should definitely work in your favor. Consistent earnings usually result in higher benefit amounts.

Don't forget you'll have to pay taxes on unemployment benefits! I made that mistake and got hit with a big tax bill the following year.

0 coins

Oh no, I didn't even think about taxes. Can you have them withhold taxes from the payments?

0 coins

Yes, you can elect to have 10% federal taxes withheld when you file your weekly claims. I'd recommend it.

0 coins

Washington state doesn't have income tax so you only need to worry about federal taxes on UI benefits.

0 coins

Just went through this whole process myself. With tech layoffs happening everywhere, Washington ESD is swamped right now. My claim took forever to get processed and I could never get anyone on the phone when I had questions.

0 coins

That's what I'm worried about. How long did your claim take to get approved?

0 coins

About 3 weeks, but I know some people waiting longer. The phone system is a nightmare - always busy or they hang up on you.

0 coins

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person at Washington ESD to get things moving.

0 coins

Make sure you apply ASAP if you haven't already. There's a one week waiting period before benefits start, and you want to get your claim in as soon as possible after your last day of work.

0 coins

I already filed online yesterday. Should I be doing anything else while I wait?

0 coins

Start your job search activities and keep detailed records. You'll need to report job search contacts when you file your weekly claims.

0 coins

the whole system is a mess right now honestly... i've been trying to get my claim fixed for weeks and cant get through to anyone at washington esd

0 coins

Have you tried calling first thing in the morning? I heard that's when you have the best chance.

0 coins

tried everything... morning, lunch, different numbers. always the same busy signal or they just hang up after waiting forever

0 coins

I had the same problem until someone told me about that Claimyr service. Finally got to talk to someone at Washington ESD and got my issue resolved. Sometimes you just need to try a different approach.

Your benefit amount will also depend on whether you have any other income coming in. Even part-time work can affect your weekly payment amount.

0 coins

I don't have any other income right now, just the unemployment. Does that mean I'll get the full amount?

0 coins

Yes, as long as you're actively seeking work and meet all the other eligibility requirements, you should get your full weekly benefit amount.

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't miss filing your weekly claims! Even if your initial claim is still being processed, you need to keep filing every week or you'll lose benefits for those weeks.

0 coins

Good point, I'll make sure to set a reminder. When do weekly claims need to be filed?

0 coins

You can file starting Sunday for the previous week, and you have until Saturday to get it in. But don't wait - file as early as possible each week.

0 coins

Been on unemployment twice in the past 5 years due to tech layoffs. The benefit calculation is pretty straightforward once you understand it, but Washington ESD's website makes it seem more complicated than it is. Your weekly amount will be roughly 3.85% of your highest quarter earnings, up to the maximum.

0 coins

That's really helpful to know the actual percentage. So if my highest quarter was around $21,000, that would be about $800 weekly?

0 coins

That math sounds about right. You might end up closer to $750-800 range depending on the exact calculation, but you're in the ballpark.

0 coins

Just remember that unemployment is temporary. Use this time to really focus on your job search and maybe learn some new skills. The tech market is tough right now but it will turn around.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. I'm trying to stay positive and use this time productively.

0 coins

Exactly the right attitude. I was laid off 6 months ago and just started a new job last week that pays even better than my old one.

0 coins

One thing nobody mentioned is that your benefits might be subject to offset if you owe certain debts like child support or student loans. Washington ESD will notify you if this applies, but it's something to be aware of.

0 coins

I don't have any of those debts, so hopefully that won't be an issue for me.

0 coins

Then you should be good. Just keep an eye on your monetary determination when it comes and make sure everything looks correct.
