How long does it take for your unemployment to get approved through Washington ESD?
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm starting to get nervous about when I'll actually see any money. My account just shows 'pending' and I haven't heard anything back yet. I've been laid off from my warehouse job and really need to know what kind of timeline I'm looking at here. Some people told me it could be weeks, others said they got approved in a few days. What's been everyone's actual experience with getting your UI claim approved? Is there anything I should be doing while I wait?

The typical timeline for Washington ESD claim approval is 2-4 weeks for straightforward cases. However, if your claim requires adjudication for any reason (like a separation issue with your employer or identity verification), it can take 6-8 weeks or longer. Have you been filing your weekly claims even though it's pending?

•Yes I've been doing the weekly claims every Sunday. What kind of things would trigger adjudication? My employer laid me off due to lack of work so I thought it would be pretty straightforward.

•Layoffs for lack of work are usually straightforward, but sometimes Washington ESD flags claims for verification of wages, work history, or just random quality control reviews. Keep filing those weekly claims regardless of the pending status.

took me 3 weeks to get approved but my friend waited 2 months because they had some issue with her previous employer disputing the claim. really depends on your situation

•Did you get back pay for those 3 weeks once it was approved?

•yeah you get paid for all the weeks you filed claims for, even during the waiting period

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for over a week about my pending claim status and it's impossible. The phone lines are constantly busy and when I do get through I just get hung up on after waiting forever. Has anyone found a reliable way to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD?

•I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works. Basically they handle all the calling and waiting for you.

THIS SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 7 WEEKS for my claim to be approved and Washington ESD keeps telling me to 'wait for adjudication' with no timeline. How are people supposed to pay rent and buy food while waiting months for bureaucrats to do their jobs??

•I understand your frustration completely. Seven weeks is definitely longer than average. Have you received any correspondence from Washington ESD explaining what specific issue is holding up your claim?

•Nothing! Just generic messages about 'processing' and 'adjudication in progress.' It's like they want people to give up and stop filing claims.

•You might want to contact your state representative's office. They can sometimes help expedite claims that have been stuck in the system for unusually long periods.

Mine got approved in exactly 14 days but I think I got lucky. My coworker who was laid off the same day as me is still waiting after 3 weeks. We both filed the same day with the same employer info so it really seems random sometimes.

•That's weird that you'd have different timelines from the same layoff. Makes me wonder what factors they're actually using to prioritize claims.

•I think it might be alphabetical or just the order they process the claims in. There doesn't seem to be much logic to it from what I can tell.

Make sure you're checking your SecureAccess Washington account regularly for any action items or requests for documentation. Sometimes Washington ESD will request additional information and if you don't respond within the timeframe they give you, it can delay your claim significantly.

•Good point, I'll double check that. I've been mostly just looking at the main claim status page.

•Also check your messages section and make sure your email notifications are turned on. Sometimes important updates get buried in there.

i was told by someone at the workforce center that first time claims usually take 3-4 weeks minimum because they have to verify everything with your employer and process all the paperwork. if you've filed for unemployment before it might be faster

•This is my first time filing so that might explain the delay. Do they actually contact your employer or is it automated?

•Washington ESD sends separation notices to employers who then have 10 days to respond if they want to dispute the claim. Most employers don't dispute layoffs for lack of work, but the waiting period still applies.

The waiting game is the worst part of this whole process. I remember checking my account multiple times a day when I was waiting for approval. Just try to stay patient and keep filing those weekly claims. The money will come retroactively once you're approved.

•That's reassuring to know about the retroactive pay. I was worried I'd lose those weeks if it takes too long to get approved.

•Nope, as long as you keep filing your weekly claims you'll get paid for all eligible weeks once the claim is approved. That's why it's crucial to keep filing even when it's pending.

Has anyone tried using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier? I'm getting desperate to talk to someone at Washington ESD about my claim that's been pending for 5 weeks now. Regular calling isn't working for me at all.

•I used Claimyr last month when I was having issues with my weekly claims not going through properly. It worked really well - they got me connected to an agent who was able to fix the problem the same day. Definitely worth trying if you're stuck.

The key thing to remember is that Washington ESD is still dealing with high volumes even though we're past the pandemic peak. They're processing thousands of claims every day so some delays are inevitable. Just make sure you're doing everything on your end correctly.

•What should I be doing on my end besides filing the weekly claims?

•Keep detailed records of your job search activities, respond to any Washington ESD requests immediately, and make sure your contact information is up to date in your account. Also verify that your direct deposit information is correct.

Mine took exactly 21 days from filing to first payment. I remember because I was counting every single day lol. The approval notification came through email and then the payment showed up in my account 2 days later.

•Did you get any updates before the approval notification or did it just suddenly change to approved?

Libby Hassan
•It just suddenly changed. I checked one morning and instead of pending it said approved with a payment date. No warning or anything.

whatever you do dont stop filing your weekly claims while you wait. i made that mistake thinking i should wait until i was approved and it messed up my whole claim. had to start over partially

•Oh no, that sounds terrible. How did you find out you needed to keep filing?

•when i finally got through to someone at washington esd they told me i had to file for every week even if the claim is pending. learned that lesson the hard way

I work at a nonprofit that helps people with unemployment issues and I can tell you that average processing times vary widely. Simple layoff cases typically take 2-3 weeks, but anything requiring adjudication can take 6-10 weeks or more. The best thing you can do is be patient and consistent with your weekly filings.

Jessica Nolan
•That's really helpful perspective. What are the most common reasons claims go to adjudication?

Sofia Peña
•Employer disputes, wage verification issues, identity verification, or if there are questions about your availability for work. Sometimes it's just random quality control reviews too.

For what it's worth, I filed my claim on a Tuesday and was approved the following Friday - so 10 days total. I think timing might matter too, like maybe claims filed at certain times get processed faster?

Jessica Nolan
•Interesting theory. I filed on a Thursday afternoon so maybe that put me in a slower batch.

•Could be totally random too. Hard to know what their internal processes actually look like.

The uncertainty is definitely the hardest part. I spent weeks checking my account multiple times a day and refreshing the page constantly. Try to find other things to focus on while you wait - easier said than done when you need the money though.

•Yeah I'm definitely obsessively checking. It's hard not to when your bills are piling up.

•Totally understand. Just remember that checking more often won't make it process faster, even though it feels like it should!

If you're really struggling financially while waiting, look into local food banks and emergency assistance programs. Many communities have resources specifically for people waiting on unemployment benefits. Don't suffer in silence while Washington ESD takes their time.

•That's a good suggestion. I hadn't thought about looking for interim help while waiting.

•211 is a good resource to call - they can connect you with local assistance programs. Just dial 2-1-1 from any phone.

I'm in a similar situation - filed my claim about 8 days ago and also just seeing "pending" with no updates. It's reassuring to read that 2-4 weeks seems to be the normal timeframe for straightforward layoffs. The retroactive payment info is especially helpful to know. I was worried I'd lose those weeks if approval takes too long. Thanks for asking this question - the responses from everyone have been really informative about what to expect!
