ESD keeps sending overpayment bills we don't owe after multiple phone confirmations
I'm at my wits end with ESD's billing department! They've been sending us overpayment notices for $4,750 plus growing interest for 3 months now. Here's the crazy part - we've called ESD THREE separate times and each agent confirmed we don't actually owe this money due to their calculation error when I was on standby status last winter. They say they've noted it in the system and the bills will stop...\n\nBut like clockwork, another notice arrives with even MORE interest added! The latest one shows $5,125 now. I'm worried they're going to send this to collections or garnish wages even though we legitimately don't owe anything. We have the dates/times of our calls but no case numbers or written confirmation.\n\nWe're completely done trying to call them (40+ minute waits just to be told the same thing). Has anyone else dealt with this billing nightmare? How did you finally get it resolved? I'm starting to think we need something in writing from them but don't know how to get it.

OMG this happened to me too!!! ESD is such a mess with their billing. I got notices for 8 MONTHS saying I owed $2,300 for \

Did you ever get it resolved? I'm starting to get really anxious about this. Did they ever try to garnish your wages or send it to collections?

you need to appeal it formally in writing dont just call. ESD phones are useless for this. Go to your eServices account and file an official appeal of the overpayment. They have to respond to that one and you'll get a written decision. keep copies of EVERYTHING

Thanks for the advice! I checked eServices but can't find where to appeal an overpayment that's already been verbally dismissed by agents. The appeal option only shows for active decisions, not ongoing billing errors.

This is unfortunately common with ESD's systems not communicating properly between departments. Here's what you need to do:\n\n1. Submit a formal appeal through your eServices account (even though the other commenter had trouble finding it, it should be under the \

jsut dont pay it. if they confirmed 3 times u dont owe it then u dont owe it. they cant do anything without sending u to court first and theyll see the notes on ur account

This is dangerously incorrect advice. ESD can and will send unpaid overpayments to collections without court involvement, and they can garnish both wages and tax refunds. They can also apply interest and penalties that continue to accrue. Always address overpayment notices formally through the proper channels.

I had this EXACT problem last year! Called multiple times, they said I didn't owe anything, but bills kept coming. What finally worked was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a tier 2 agent who could actually access the billing system directly. Regular agents can see the notes but can't always fix billing issues.\n\nThe tier 2 agent put a permanent suppression on my account and sent me an email confirmation that I didn't owe anything. Check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3\n\nWorth it to finally get this fixed after months of stress!

what is this claimyr thing? never heard of it before. does it actually work to get through faster?

Yeah it basically holds your place in line so you don't have to stay on the phone for hours. When they get an agent they call you back. The tier 2 specialists are the only ones who could actually fix my billing issue instead of just making notes.

You absolutely need documentation in writing. Phone calls to ESD aren't enough because their systems are compartmentalized. I dealt with a similar issue (though smaller amount - $1,890) and what finally worked was:\n\n1. Filing a formal appeal through eServices\n2. Sending a secure message specifically asking for a \

DONT TRUST ANYTHING THEY SAY OVER THE PHONE!!!! I made that mistake and ended up having my tax refund garnished 2 years later!!!!! ESD is completely broken between departments and the phone agents have NO AUTHORITY to fix billing problems no matter what they tell you. Get EVERYTHING in writing or you'll regret it later!!!!

This is so scary! Did you ever get your refund back? I'm worried this is going to happen to me too - they say it's fixed but I have nothing in writing.

It took 4 months to get my refund back after I proved I didn't owe anything. Had to file an OAH appeal and everything. Such a pain!!!

im dealing with something kinda the same. they keep saying i had unreported earnings but i DID report them every week! but the amounts they show are wrong anyway. so frustrating trying to get anyone on the phone who can actually help

For unreported earnings issues, you'll want to gather your pay stubs from the period in question and submit copies through your eServices secure message center. Reference each specific week you're being charged with unreported earnings and show what you actually reported vs. what you were paid. This type of documentation is essential for resolving earnings discrepancies.

Glad you're making progress! Make sure to follow up if you don't receive that letter within the 10 days they promised. In my experience, it's worth calling again after about 7 business days to verify the supervisor actually processed the request. Hope this resolves it for you!
