Claim showing 'pending' after restart for new benefit year - normal or problem?

I just had to restart my unemployment claim because we entered a new benefit year (my original claim from last February expired). After completing all the steps to reapply, my status is now showing as 'pending' in the ESD dashboard. There's no adjudication or any issues listed - just 'pending.' Is this normal for a restarted claim in a new benefit year? Will it automatically change to active, or is this a signal I need to contact ESD? I'm trying to decide if I should spend hours calling tomorrow or if this is just part of the normal process and I should leave it alone. Anyone deal with this recently?

This is totally normal! When you start a new benefit year, ESD has to verify your wages from the previous base year and confirm you meet the requirements for a new claim. The pending status is just their system working through that verification process. It usually takes 2-3 business days to resolve itself, but can sometimes take up to a week. Just keep filing your weekly claims while you wait - they'll get paid retroactively once the new claim is approved. As long as there are no adjudication issues or disqualification notices, you should be fine to just wait it out.

Thank you! That's a relief. Do you know if I should expect any kind of notification when it switches from pending to active? And what happens if it stays in pending after a week?

Thanks for sharing your experience. 10 days is a long time to wait when bills are due though... did you get any notification when it changed, or did you just have to keep checking?

While the previous comments about this being normal are generally correct, I'd recommend keeping a close eye on it. For most people, pending status after a benefit year restart resolves automatically within 3-7 days. However, if you have any of these situations, it might need attention: 1. If you worked for a new employer during your last benefit year 2. If you had significant changes in your wages 3. If you moved or had other demographic changes If it remains pending after 7 business days with no adjudication notes, THEN it's time to contact ESD. Keep filing your weekly claims in the meantime, and document everything just in case.

I did work for a new employer for about 3 months during my last benefit year, so maybe that's why it's pending. Should I be proactive and call now since I know there might be an issue, or still wait the 7 days?

I went through EXACTLY this in March. The system kept my claim in 'pending' for almost 2 weeks, and when I finally got through to ESD, they told me it was because my new employer hadn't responded to their verification request yet. SO FRUSTRATING! The ESD agent fixed it while I was on the phone, but it took me literally 42 calls to reach someone. If you need to get through to ESD quickly, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). My friend told me about it after watching their demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3). They got me connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. Totally worth it for resolving these pending claim issues quickly.

seriously??? paying to talk to esd? that sounds like a scam to me. OP just keep calling the regular number and you'll get through eventually

Not a scam at all. It just helps you skip the phone queue. When you're missing payments and bills are due, waiting days to get through isn't always an option. But everyone's situation is different - if you have time to keep calling repeatedly, that works too.

UGH! I hate when this happens! My claim went pending THREE TIMES last year after various restarts and identity verifications. The ESD system is such garbage!!! One time it was pending for 3 days, one time for 5 days, and the third time I had to call in because it had been TWO WEEKS with no change. Turns out they were missing ONE DOCUMENT that nobody ever told me about!!! The worst part? The ESD agent acted like I should have magically known!!! THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE US FAIL!!!!!

While it can certainly be frustrating, the pending status is actually an important protection that helps prevent fraud. ESD needs to verify eligibility when claims restart to ensure benefits go to eligible claimants. But you're right that they could improve their communication about what documents might be needed and what's causing delays.

Hope yours gets resolved soon! Let me know if your status changes in the next few days. I'll keep filing my weekly claims in the meantime.

Just to add to my earlier comment - make sure you're checking both your online ESD account AND your email (including spam/junk folders). Sometimes they'll send requests for additional information that can cause the pending status to continue if you don't respond promptly. The verification process for a new benefit year is more thorough than regular weekly claims, so it's normal for it to take longer.

Great point about checking email - I just looked and don't see anything from them, but I'll keep checking daily. Thanks for the advice!

my cousin works at esd and says they're super backed up with all the benefit year transitions right now. april is apparently their busiest month for this. he says just wait it out.

UPDATE: My claim just switched from pending to active today (day 5). Didn't receive any notification - just happened to check this morning. Thanks everyone for the advice and reassurance! For anyone else going through this, seems like waiting is the best approach unless it goes beyond a week.

That's great news! Glad it resolved itself without you having to spend hours on the phone. This is the typical experience for most claim restarts, but it's always good to hear success stories.

Great to see this resolved! Just wanted to add for future readers - I've noticed that ESD seems to process these benefit year transitions in batches, which is probably why some people see changes after 3 days while others wait 7-10 days. It's not necessarily that there's a problem with the longer waits, just depends on when your claim gets picked up in their processing queue. Also worth noting that if you DO end up needing to call, early morning (right at 8am) or late afternoon (after 4pm) tend to have shorter wait times in my experience.
