Can you claim unemployment two times in one year in Washington?
I'm confused about whether I can file for unemployment benefits twice in the same year through Washington ESD. I had a seasonal job that ended in March and I collected UI for about 8 weeks before finding new work in May. Now that job just ended unexpectedly and I'm wondering if I can claim unemployment two times in one year or if there's some kind of restriction? My benefit year started in March so I still have time left on it, but I'm not sure how this works with having two separate periods of unemployment.

Yes, you can absolutely claim unemployment multiple times within the same benefit year as long as you have remaining weeks and balance left. Since you already have an active claim from March, you should be able to reopen it rather than filing a new claim.

•That's a relief! Do I need to do anything special to reopen it or just start filing weekly claims again?

•You'll need to request to reopen your claim through your Washington ESD account. There might be a waiting period depending on how long it's been since your last claim.

I did this exact same thing last year - worked seasonal, got unemployment, found temp work, then needed unemployment again. Washington ESD allows it as long as you're within your benefit year and have weeks remaining.

•How long did it take for your benefits to restart when you reopened your claim?

•It took about a week for them to process the reopening. Make sure you have all your employment info ready for the weeks you worked.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for three days to ask about reopening my claim but their phone system is impossible. The automated system just hangs up on me after 30 minutes of waiting. Has anyone found a better way to reach them?

•I had the same problem until I found Claimyr.com - they have this system that calls Washington ESD for you and gets you connected to an actual person. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me so much frustration.

•That sounds too good to be true. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legit - I was skeptical too but it got me through to an agent in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own.

The key thing to understand is that Washington ESD operates on benefit years, not calendar years. Your benefit year runs 52 weeks from when you first filed. You can have multiple unemployment periods within that year as long as you meet the work requirements between claims.

•What are the work requirements between claims? I worked about 12 weeks between my unemployment periods.

•You need to have worked and earned at least your weekly benefit amount in wages since your last claim. 12 weeks should definitely meet that requirement.

wait so you can just keep going on and off unemployment as many times as you want? that seems like it could be abused

•There are limits - you can only collect up to 26 weeks total in a benefit year, and you have to be actively looking for work. It's not unlimited.

•oh ok that makes more sense. i thought it was just unlimited unemployment lol

I'm in a similar situation but my benefit year expired while I was working. Do I need to file a new claim or can I still reopen the old one?

•If your benefit year expired, you'll need to file a new claim, not reopen the old one. The system will automatically determine if you qualify for a new benefit year.

•Thanks, that's what I was afraid of. Filing a new claim seems more complicated than just reopening.

Update: I tried to reopen my claim online but it's asking for all this information about my recent employer and I'm not sure if I'm filling it out right. The questions are confusing.

•The employer information is important because it affects your benefit calculation. Make sure you report the exact dates you worked and total wages earned.

•I had trouble with that part too. If you're not sure about the exact amounts, it's better to call and speak with someone rather than guess.

Does anyone know if there's a penalty for reopening a claim? I heard somewhere that they might reduce your benefits if you go back on unemployment too quickly.

•There's no penalty for legitimate job loss. The only issue would be if you voluntarily quit without good cause, but layoffs and contract endings are fine.

Mae Bennett
•Good to know, I was worried about that. My contract just wasn't renewed so it should be fine.

This is exactly why I hate the unemployment system - it's so confusing and they make it hard to figure out what you're supposed to do. Why can't they just have clear instructions?

•I know it's frustrating but once you understand how benefit years work, it makes more sense. The problem is they don't explain it well.

•Yeah, they assume everyone knows all these rules but it's my first time dealing with unemployment more than once.

Can you collect unemployment from two different states if you worked in both? I worked in Washington and Oregon this year.

Caesar Grant
•You can only have one active claim at a time, but you might be able to combine wages from both states. You'd need to file in the state where you worked most recently.

Melina Haruko
•That's more complicated than I thought. I'll probably need to call and ask about combining wages.

I reopened my claim last month and they put me through adjudication again even though I'd already been approved before. Is this normal?

Demi Hall
•Sometimes they need to review the circumstances of your new job separation, especially if it's different from your original claim reason.

•Ugh, adjudication took forever the first time. I hope it's faster this time around.

For anyone still having trouble reaching Washington ESD by phone, I used Claimyr last week and it worked great. They got me connected to an agent who helped me reopen my claim properly. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•How much does that service cost? Is it worth it?

•It's worth it if you value your time. Much cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day trying to get through.

I think I made a mistake and filed a new claim instead of reopening my old one. Now I have two claims in the system and I'm not sure which one is active.

•You'll definitely need to call Washington ESD to sort that out. Having duplicate claims can cause payment delays and confusion.

•Great, another reason I need to get through to them. This is such a mess.

Does working part-time affect your ability to reopen a claim? I've been doing some gig work since my main job ended.
0 coins
Demi Hall
•You can still reopen your claim, but you'll need to report the gig work income on your weekly claims. It might reduce your benefits depending on how much you earn.

Mason Lopez
•Okay, I'll make sure to report everything accurately. Don't want to get in trouble for unreported income.

This thread has been super helpful! I was totally confused about the difference between reopening and filing new, but now I understand it's about the benefit year.

•Glad I'm not the only one who was confused about this. The Washington ESD website doesn't explain it very clearly.

One more question - do I need to redo the job search requirements when I reopen my claim, or do the ones from before still count?
0 coins
Caesar Grant
•You'll need to start fresh with job search activities from the date you reopen your claim. Previous activities don't carry over to the new claim period.

•Got it, so I need to make sure I'm doing my three job searches per week starting immediately.

I successfully reopened my claim this morning after reading this thread. The process was actually pretty straightforward once I understood what I was doing. Thanks for all the help!

For anyone still struggling to get through to Washington ESD, I just tried Claimyr again this morning and got connected in 15 minutes. The agent was able to answer all my questions about reopening my claim and even helped me fix an issue with my job search log.

•It's definitely worth it, especially when you have specific questions that need to be answered by an actual person rather than just the automated system.
