Can I reapply for unemployment after it runs out - Washington ESD process?
My unemployment benefits are about to run out in 2 weeks and I'm still looking for work. I've been on regular UI for about 24 weeks now. Can I reapply for unemployment after it runs out or do I have to wait? I'm confused about the Washington ESD process for this. Do I need to file a new claim or is there some kind of extension? Really stressed about this because I haven't found anything yet despite applying everywhere.

You can't just reapply immediately after your benefit year ends. You have to wait until you've worked enough to qualify for a new claim, which means earning at least $1,020 in covered wages during your base period. If you don't have enough wages, you might be able to file for a new claim but it won't be approved.

•So I'm basically screwed if I haven't worked enough? That seems harsh.

•Unfortunately yes, that's how the system works. You need to have sufficient wages in your base period to establish a new claim.

There might be other options though. Have you looked into WorkSource services? They have job training programs that might help, and some training programs can extend your benefits in certain situations.

•I registered with WorkSource but haven't really used their services much. What kind of training programs?

•They have various programs - some for specific skills, some for career changes. Check their website or visit a local office to see what's available in your area.

I was in the same boat last year. The easiest way to get clarity on your specific situation is to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD. I know calling is a nightmare, but I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ

•How much does something like that cost? I'm already broke from being unemployed.

•It's worth checking their site for current info. For me, it was worth it to get actual answers instead of guessing about my claim status.

•I used Claimyr too when I had issues with my adjudication. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

Wait, I thought there were extensions available? Like didn't they have extended benefits during COVID?

•Those pandemic programs ended years ago. Regular extended benefits only kick in when unemployment rates are high enough, which they're not right now in Washington.

•Oh damn, I didn't realize those were over. That sucks.

You might want to check if you qualify for any other assistance programs while you're looking. Food assistance, housing help, etc. It's not unemployment but it can help bridge the gap.

•Yeah I've been looking into that. Just hoping I can figure out the unemployment situation first.

The whole system is designed to screw people over. They make it so complicated on purpose so people give up and don't collect what they're owed.

•I mean, there are legitimate reasons why you can't just keep collecting indefinitely without working...

•Sure but they could make the process clearer instead of all this confusing bureaucracy.

One thing to consider is if you do any gig work or part-time work, you might be able to build up enough wages for a new claim. Even small amounts can help if you're close to the threshold.

•I've done some DoorDash but not much. Would that count toward the wage requirement?

Diego Flores
•Depends on how you're classified. If you're getting a 1099, it might not count the same way as W-2 wages. You'd need to check with Washington ESD about your specific situation.

Have you tried calling the Washington ESD customer service line? I know it's hard to get through but they should be able to tell you exactly what your options are.

•I've tried calling so many times but either get a busy signal or get disconnected after waiting forever.

•That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They handle all that calling frustration for you and actually get you to a real person.

Don't forget to keep filing your weekly claims until your benefits actually end. Some people stop filing thinking they're done but you have to keep going until the system says you're exhausted.

•Good point, I'll make sure to keep doing that. Thanks for the reminder.

You should also document everything - when your benefits end, what you've been told about reapplying, etc. If there are any issues later you'll want that paper trail.

•That's smart advice. I'll start keeping better records of everything.

I'm going through the same thing right now. It's so stressful not knowing what happens next. The job market is still tough out there.
0 coins
Freya Andersen
•Right? It's like they expect you to just magically find a job before your benefits run out.

Aisha Mahmood
•Exactly. And most jobs take weeks to even get back to you, let alone actually hire.

Check your online account regularly too. Sometimes there are notices or requirements you might miss if you're not logging in frequently.

•I log in every week for my claims but I should probably check more often for other stuff.

Another option might be to look into temporary or contract work. Even if it's not your ideal job, it could help you build up wages for a future claim and give you some income.

Freya Andersen
•Yeah I've been thinking about that. Just worried about taking something temporary and then missing out on better opportunities.

•I get that, but sometimes you gotta take what's available while you keep looking for better options.

The timing of everything is so important with unemployment. Make sure you understand exactly when your benefit year ends vs when your benefits exhaust. They're not always the same thing.

Freya Andersen
•Wait, what's the difference? I thought they were the same thing.

•Your benefit year is 52 weeks from when you first filed. Your benefits exhaust when you've used up all your weekly benefit amount. You could exhaust before your year is up if you collected the maximum.

I hate to say it but you might want to start preparing for the possibility that you won't be able to reapply right away. Look into other resources and assistance programs now rather than waiting.

•That's depressing but probably realistic advice. I should start looking into other options.

One more thing - if you do find work before your benefits end, you can sometimes come back to claim remaining benefits later if you lose that job, as long as you're still within your benefit year.
0 coins
Freya Andersen
•That's actually good to know. So if I find something temporary I wouldn't lose my remaining benefits completely?
0 coins
Andre Rousseau
•Right, as long as you're still within your benefit year period. But definitely verify this with Washington ESD since rules can be complex.

The whole system is so confusing. I wish they would just explain this stuff clearly instead of making you figure it out yourself.

Freya Andersen
•Totally agree. It shouldn't be this hard to understand your options.

Keep your chin up OP. I know it's stressful but you'll figure it out. Lots of people go through this and come out the other side okay.

Definitely get the official word from Washington ESD about your specific situation. Every case is a little different and you don't want to miss any options you might have.

Freya Andersen
•You're right. I'll try to get through to them somehow and get definitive answers about my case.

•That's where Claimyr really helped me out. Finally got to talk to someone who could look at my actual account and explain my options.

•@Chloe Robinson I keep seeing you mention Claimyr - is it really worth it? I m'hesitant to pay for something when I m'already struggling financially, but if it actually works to get through to a real person at ESD, maybe it s'better than spending weeks trying to call myself.
