Can I re apply for unemployment benefits after my Washington ESD claim ended?
My unemployment benefits ran out back in September and I've been working part-time since then but it's not enough to cover my bills. The job market is still pretty rough in my field and I'm wondering if I can re apply for unemployment again? I wasn't sure if there's a waiting period or if I need to meet certain requirements since I already used up my benefits once this year. Has anyone been through this process with Washington ESD?

Yes you can definitely reapply! You just need to file a new initial claim through the Washington ESD website. Since you worked after your last claim ended, you should have new wages to qualify. The key is making sure you have enough earnings in your base period.

•Thanks! Do you know how much I need to have earned to qualify again?

•You need at least $3,850 in your base period, with earnings in at least two quarters. Your base period is the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters.

I did this exact same thing last year. Filed a new claim after my benefits ended and I had been working. Took about 2 weeks to get approved and start receiving payments again.

•That's reassuring! Did you have to do the whole WorkSource registration thing again?

Esmeralda Gómez
•Yeah you have to register with WorkSource WA again and do the job search requirements, but it's pretty straightforward.

Just make sure you meet the monetary requirements before applying. I tried to reapply too soon and got denied because I didn't have enough qualifying wages yet.

•How do you check if you have enough qualifying wages?

•You can use the benefit calculator on the Washington ESD website to get an estimate before you apply.

The process is called filing a 'new initial claim' and you can do it online at esd.wa.gov. Since you worked after your last claim, you should be eligible as long as you meet the wage requirements and are unemployed through no fault of your own.

•Perfect, I'll check the wage calculator first then file if I qualify. Thanks for the help!

One thing to watch out for - if you quit your part-time job without good cause, that could affect your eligibility. Make sure you have a qualifying separation reason.

•I didn't quit, my hours just got cut way back. Would that be considered good cause?

Dmitri Volkov
•Yeah, having your hours reduced significantly usually qualifies. Washington ESD considers that a qualifying separation.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about my reapplication but their phone lines are always busy. Anyone have luck calling them recently?

Esmeralda Gómez
•The phone situation is brutal. I spent hours trying to get through last month.

•I actually found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an agent. They have this system that calls for you and connects you when an agent picks up. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, I'll check that out. At this point I'm willing to try anything to avoid sitting on hold for hours.

Wait, I thought there was some kind of waiting period between claims? My friend told me you had to wait a year or something.

Yuki Tanaka
•No waiting period in Washington. You can file a new claim as soon as you meet the wage requirements from working after your last claim.

•Oh good to know! I was misinformed then.

This is exactly what I needed to see. I've been putting off reapplying because I thought it would be a huge hassle but it sounds pretty straightforward.

•It really is! The hardest part is just making sure you have enough qualifying wages from your recent work.

Does anyone know if the benefit amount changes when you reapply? Like if I was getting $500/week before, would it be the same amount?

LilMama23
•Your weekly benefit amount is recalculated based on your wages during the new base period. So it could be higher, lower, or the same depending on what you earned.

•Makes sense. I guess I'll find out when I apply!

Update: I checked the benefit calculator and I do qualify! Going to file my new claim tomorrow. Thanks everyone for the helpful info.

•Great news! Make sure to file your weekly claims on time once you get approved.

I'm in a similar boat but I'm worried about the job search requirements. Are they still doing the 3 job contacts per week thing?
0 coins
LilMama23
•Yes, you still need to make 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. You can do it through WorkSource WA or keep your own record.

•Ugh, that part is such a pain. But I guess it's worth it for the benefits.

Just want to add that if you're having trouble with your application or need to talk to someone about your specific situation, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I used it last week and got connected to an Washington ESD agent in about 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold forever.

•I tried it after seeing it mentioned here and it worked great! Definitely worth it when you need to actually talk to someone.

•How much does it cost though?

•I don't want to get into pricing details but for me it was worth not wasting half my day on hold. Check their site for current rates.

The system is so confusing. I filed a new claim three weeks ago and it's still showing 'pending' status. No idea what's going on.

LilMama23
•Might be in adjudication if there's any question about your separation from work or wages. You should try calling to check on the status.

Ava Williams
•Yeah I'll try calling but getting through is nearly impossible.

•This is exactly when something like Claimyr comes in handy. You really need to talk to an agent to find out what's holding up your claim.

Can confirm you can reapply. I've done it twice now over the past few years. Each time I worked enough to qualify for a new claim period.

•Good to hear from someone with multiple experiences! Any tips for the application process?

•Just make sure you have all your employment info ready - dates, wages, reason for separation. And be patient, it can take a couple weeks to process.

I tried to reapply last month but got confused by all the questions about my previous claim. Anyone else run into issues with that part?

Yuki Tanaka
•Yeah the questions can be confusing. Just answer honestly about when your last claim ended and why you're filing a new one.

•Thanks, I'll give it another shot with that in mind.

This thread is super helpful! I had no idea you could reapply. I thought once your benefits ended that was it.

Esmeralda Gómez
•Nope! As long as you work enough to establish new qualifying wages, you can file again.

Word of warning - make sure you're actually unemployed or underemployed when you file. They will verify your employment status.

CaptainAwesome
•Yeah I'm only working about 15 hours a week now, which definitely qualifies as underemployed.

Keisha Thompson
•Perfect, you should be good then. Just report those part-time wages on your weekly claims.

Just wanted to add my experience - I reapplied in October after working temp jobs for a few months and it was pretty smooth. The key thing is making sure you have enough wages from work AFTER your previous claim ended. I had to wait an extra month because my first temp job didn't pay enough to meet the requirements, but once I had sufficient earnings it went through without any issues. The online application took about 30 minutes and I got my first payment two weeks later.
