Social Security payment scheduled for Christmas Day - Will I get paid Dec 24th or 26th?

Does anyone know what happens when your Social Security payment date falls on Christmas? My retirement benefit is normally deposited on the 25th of each month, but this year that's Christmas Day and I know banks are closed. Will the SSA deposit my payment early on the 24th or will it be delayed until the 26th? Need to plan my bill payments and I can't seem to find a straight answer on the SSA website. Thanks!

Social Security always pays EARLY when your payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday. For Christmas falling on the 25th, you'll receive your payment on Tuesday, December 24th. They never pay late for holidays. This applies to all types of Social Security benefits - retirement, survivors, SSDI, etc.

Thanks for the quick answer! That's a relief. So I should see it in my account on Christmas Eve then? I was worried about having to wait until after the holiday.

Yep, exactly! SSA always pays EARLY for holidays, never late. Been getting mine for 7 years and it's always been that way. They're actually reliable about this part of things, even if everything else about them is frustrating lol

Just to add some clarification, Social Security follows a consistent schedule for holiday payments. When your payment date falls on a federal holiday like Christmas, the payment will be made on the preceding business day, which would be December 24th. This policy ensures beneficiaries don't experience delays in receiving their funds due to holiday closures. You can verify this on the SSA payment calendar. It's helpful to keep these dates marked if you regularly have bills due around your payment date.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! Is there somewhere specific on the SSA website where I can find future payment calendars? Would help me plan ahead for next year too.

I've had this happen twice in previous years. You'll definitely get paid on the 24th. Social Security is actually really good about making sure payments arrive early rather than late when holidays are involved. BUT make sure your bank doesn't have any processing delays of their own! One year my credit union held the deposit an extra day even though SSA sent it. Might want to check with your bank if you're concerned.

Good point about the bank processing! I'll give my bank a call and double-check. I've had issues with them in the past with direct deposits.

THIS MAKES ME SO ANGRY! I called SSA about this EXACT question last month and was on hold for 2 HOURS before giving up! Why can't they put this information clearly on their website?? It should be the FIRST thing you see when you log into your mySocialSecurity account if your payment date falls on a holiday. But nooooo, that would be too HELPFUL!

Totally agree! And trying to get through to them on the phone is impossible these days. I tried calling about an overpayment notice last week and couldn't get anyone after 3 attempts and over an hour of waiting each time.

anyone know if this is the same for SSI payments too? my sister gets SSI

Yes, it applies to SSI payments too. All Social Security administered benefits follow the same holiday schedule for payment dates. So SSI payments that would fall on a holiday get paid on the business day before the holiday.

I had this same problem last year and discovered something that really helped. After struggling to reach SSA by phone, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to an agent in about 15 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - totally worth it when you need answers quickly about payment dates or other urgent issues.

Thanks for the tip! I might need this for other questions I have about my benefits. The wait times when calling SSA directly are ridiculous.

Just to add a quick note - while the payment SHOULD arrive on the 24th, I always recommend having a small emergency buffer in your account around the holidays. Even though SSA sends the payment early, sometimes there can be system delays or other issues that might cause a hiccup. Better safe than sorry!

This is really good advice. I learned this the hard way last year when my payment was technically sent on time but took an extra day to show up in my account because of holiday processing volumes. Had to reschedule a bill payment and got hit with a late fee.

For anyone looking for this info in the future, I found the official SSA payment calendar on their website at ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10031-2024.pdf (they update it yearly). It clearly shows all the adjusted dates when regular payment days fall on holidays. Really wish they made this easier to find! Would save everyone a lot of stress and phone calls.

This is incredibly helpful! I wish I had known about this calendar earlier. Just bookmarked it for future reference. It's frustrating that something this important isn't prominently displayed on their main website or in the member portal. Thanks for sharing the direct link!

I work at a local Social Security field office and can confirm what others have said - you'll definitely receive your payment on December 24th since Christmas falls on the 25th. We process these early payments automatically, so there's no need to call or take any action on your part. The system is set up to ensure no one experiences delays due to federal holidays. Just wanted to add that this same rule applies year-round for any federal holiday that falls on your regular payment date - Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, etc. The payment always comes the business day before, never after.

This is so reassuring to hear from someone who actually works at SSA! Thank you for taking the time to explain this. It's really helpful to know that this applies to all federal holidays throughout the year, not just Christmas. I feel much better about planning my finances now. Really appreciate you sharing your insider knowledge!
