Can't find where to request retroactive SS benefits on online application - put it in comments section?
I just submitted my Social Security retirement application online yesterday and I'm second-guessing myself about the retroactive benefits part. I turned 70 on October 1st, and I set my benefit start date as December 1st (so first payment comes in January 2025). But I really wanted to request retroactive benefits for October and November too since I'm already past FRA. The problem is I couldn't find ANY section in the online application to specifically request retroactive payments! I ended up just explaining it in the comments box at the very end of the application. Will that be enough? I'm worried they'll miss it completely. Today I got an email saying my application was assigned for processing, and I actually managed to speak with an SSA agent who said my application looked good and that my explanation in the comments section was clear. But now I'm wondering - should I still make an appointment to specifically discuss the retroactive benefits? Or just wait a few weeks and call to check the status? I don't want to miss out on those two months of payments!

You actually handled this correctly! The comments section at the end of the online application is precisely where you should request retroactive benefits if you're already at or past your Full Retirement Age. Since you're 70, you're definitely eligible for those retroactive months (up to 6 months max for retirement benefits). The fact that an SSA agent already reviewed your application and confirmed your comments were clear is a very good sign. In my experience, they'll process this correctly based on your comments. When they calculate your benefits, they should include October and November 2024 as you requested. I would suggest calling to check the status in about 3 weeks as you planned, rather than making a separate appointment. Just make sure when you call to specifically ask them to confirm the retroactive months were included.

•Thank you so much! That's reassuring. I was worried I'd missed some obvious checkbox or section for retroactive benefits. I'll definitely call in 3 weeks and specifically ask about the retroactive months.

I went through something similar last year. Put your mind at ease - the comments section works fine for requesting retroactive benefits. The SSA processes thousands of these requests. Since an agent already told you it looks good, you're in great shape! No need for an appointment unless they contact you first. Just follow up with a status check call in a few weeks like you planned.

•It's great to hear from someone who went through this! Did you end up getting your retroactive benefits without any issues?

•The SSA website is truly awful. I tried doing my application online but got so confused I ended up just going to the local office. Took half a day but at least I knew everything was done right.

You're fine. The comments section is where retroactive requests go on the online app. I work with retirees and this comes up ALL THE TIME. As long as you're beyond FRA (which at 70 you definitely are), you can get up to 6 months retroactive on retirement benefits. Sounds like you did everything right. The email confirmation and agent review are good signs.

•Thank you for confirming! It's good to know this is a common situation. I was kicking myself thinking I might have missed something obvious.

Getting through to an actual person at Social Security is a miracle these days! I've been trying to reach someone about my wife's benefits for WEEKS. Always busy signals or disconnects after waiting for hours. How did you manage to talk to an agent so quickly? About your question though - yes, comments section is fine for retroactive request. That's where I had to put mine too. Got my retroactive benefits without any issues.

•If you're still having trouble reaching SSA, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in the same boat - couldn't get through for 3 weeks trying to resolve an issue with my SSDI application. Their service got me connected to an actual SSA agent in under 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Totally worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive benefit issues and can't waste days trying to get through.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll check that out. At this point I'm desperate to talk to someone at SSA before my wife's application deadline.

To answer how I got through to someone - pure luck I think! I called first thing in the morning (right when they opened at 8am) and only had to wait about 25 minutes. But I've definitely had the busy signals and disconnects before too. It's incredibly frustrating.

Another thing worth noting - since you're 70, you've maximized your delayed retirement credits (DRCs). Setting your start date as December doesn't actually increase your benefit amount further. You could technically request retroactive benefits all the way back to April 2024 (6 months max) if you wanted to. Just something to consider when you call to check status.

•That's a really good point! I didn't think about requesting more months. I'll definitely ask about this when I call. Is there any downside to requesting the full 6 months retroactive instead of just the 2 months I initially asked for?

•No downside at all in your case. Since you're already 70, your benefit amount is fully maximized. Each month of retroactive payments is simply money in your pocket that you're entitled to. Definitely ask about getting the full 6 months when you call.

does anyone know if they deposit retroactive payments separate or include it with ur first regular payment? i hear its a lump sum but not sure when they send it

•They typically send retroactive payments as a separate lump sum deposit, usually within a month after your regular benefits begin. But sometimes the timing varies depending on how backed up they are with processing.

Looks like you've got good advice already. One thing I'd add is to print a copy of your application confirmation and save that email saying your application was assigned. Documentation is so important with SSA! I'd still call in a few weeks as planned - if they don't mention the retroactive benefits, specifically ask if they processed the request in your comments. Better to be proactive than have to fix it later.

•That's smart advice - I did save the confirmation email but hadn't thought about printing it. I'll do that today. And I'll definitely be specific about the retroactive benefits when I call.

I'm confused about something. I thought you only get retroactive pay if you file AFTER your full retirement age? I'm 63 and planning to claim next year. Can I get retroactive payments too?

•No, retroactive benefits for retirement only apply if you're at or past your Full Retirement Age (FRA). At 63, you're claiming early, so retroactive benefits aren't available. It's only when you're past FRA, and even then it's limited to 6 months maximum for retirement benefits. SSDI has different retroactive rules.

•Thanks for explaining! I misunderstood how that worked.
