PA UC benefit extension after regular 26 weeks expire? Struggling to find jobs without degree
So my regular UC benefits are gonna run out in about 2 weeks (hit the 26 week mark) and I'm seriously stressing. Been applying to everything in my area that pays more than minimum wage but getting nowhere. Every decent job wants a bachelor's degree which I don't have, and I refuse to work fast food again after doing that for 5 years. Is there still some type of extension I can file for in PA when my regular benefits expire? I heard they had those during COVID but not sure if that's still a thing in 2025? My rent just went up $200 and I'm about to be completely broke. Any advice appreciated!!!

Unfortunately, the extended benefits programs that were available during COVID (like PEUC and EB) have ended. Pennsylvania currently doesn't offer any automatic extensions once you exhaust your regular 26 weeks of UC benefits. Your options at this point are limited to: 1. Continue your job search but maybe expand to different industries 2. Look into PA CareerLink services for job placement assistance 3. Check if you might qualify for other assistance programs like SNAP or LIHEAP If you've worked any jobs during your benefit year that you haven't claimed UC for, you might be able to establish a new claim after your current one expires, but that depends on if you've earned enough qualifying wages.

•Thanks for being straight with me. I was afraid that was the case but hoping there might be something. I've been to CareerLink twice but they just gave me the same basic job search info I already knew. Guess I'll have to lower my standards and take whatever I can get at this point. 😞

look into trade schools maybe? i was in ur exact situation in 2023, ended up getting a 6 month certification in medical coding and now make decent $. some programs even give u $ while ur in training.

•That's actually not a bad idea! How much did your certification cost? And did you have to take out loans? I'm already drowning in debt from my failed attempt at college a few years back.

While regular extensions aren't available anymore, you should check if you qualify for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA). It's for people who lost jobs due to foreign competition. Also, sometimes PA activates a separate Extended Benefits program during periods of high unemployment, but it's not currently active. Another option - if you worked any other jobs during your benefit year that weren't part of your original UC claim calculation, you might be able to file a new claim based on those wages after your current benefit year ends.

•THIS IS NOT TRUE! TAA is ONLY for specific companies that have been CERTIFIED by the Dept of Labor. You can't just apply for it because you want it. Your company has to have a certified petition. Stop giving false hope!!!!

I feel your pain! The whole system is designed to fail us who don't have fancy degrees. When my benefits ran out last month, I couldn't get ANYONE on the phone at PA UC to answer questions. I kept getting busy signals for DAYS. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual agent in like 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The agent confirmed no extensions exist right now but gave me info on other assistance programs I qualified for. Might be worth checking if you need specific answers about your situation.

•Does this Claimyr thing actually work? I'm skeptical of anything that promises to get through to UC when their phone lines are constantly jammed.

•It worked for me! I was also super skeptical but was desperate after trying for 3 days straight. They basically keep dialing for you automatically until they get through, then call you to connect. Saved me hours of redial hell.

•I applied to two Amazon locations actually! One never responded and the other offered me overnight shifts only which I can't do because of my kid. But you're right, I need to be less picky given my situation.

This is EXACTLY why I've been saying we need to extend unemployment benefits permanently!!! The system is BROKEN and designed to throw people into poverty after 26 weeks! And don't get me started on the ridiculous job search requirements they make us do when there ARE NO JOBS that pay living wages without degrees!!!

•While I understand your frustration, unemployment insurance was never designed to be a long-term solution. Its purpose is to provide temporary assistance while people transition between jobs. The more productive approach is focusing on skill development and job creation rather than extending benefits indefinitely.

•Oh please with that bootstrap mentality! You can't "skill develop" your way out of an economy that requires $80k in student debt for a chance at a living wage! The system is RIGGED!

Have you considered remote work? I was in a similar situation last year (no degree, UC running out). I found an entry-level customer service job that's fully remote with a healthcare company. Pay isn't amazing but it's steady and has growth potential. Sites like FlexJobs and Remote.co have legitimate listings that often don't require degrees, just decent computer skills. Worth checking out!

•I actually haven't looked much into remote work - that's a good suggestion! Did you have to pay for access to those job sites? And did you need any special equipment for your remote job?

•FlexJobs does have a membership fee (I think around $15/month) but Remote.co is free. I just needed a reliable computer and internet connection. My company actually sent me a headset for phone calls. Some remote customer service jobs even provide equipment!

One thing to note - if you do find employment but it's part-time or lower-paying than your previous job, you might qualify for Partial UC benefits. Many people don't realize you can still receive some UC while working part-time, as long as you report your earnings accurately. This could help bridge the gap while you continue looking for something better.

•That's really helpful to know. I might have to take something part-time soon just to have some income. Do you know what the income threshold is before UC benefits completely cut off?

•The formula is a bit complicated, but generally, you can earn up to 30% of your weekly benefit rate without reduction. After that, they reduce your benefit dollar-for-dollar. So if your weekly benefit is $300, you could earn up to $90 without losing any benefits, then your benefit reduces based on additional earnings.
