Where do I add NYS Department of Labor unemployment benefits on my tax return?

Got my 1099-G from NYS Department of Labor last week showing I collected $8,200 in unemployment last year. This is my first time filing taxes with unemployment income and I'm confused about where exactly this goes on my return. Do I just add it to my regular income or is there a special section? Also worried about owing a bunch of money since I didn't have taxes taken out during the year. Anyone know if there's anything special I need to do for NYS Department of Labor benefits when filing?

Unemployment benefits go on Line 7 of Form 1040 under 'Other Income.' You'll report the full amount from your 1099-G. Since you didn't have withholding, you'll likely owe taxes on that income. The good news is unemployment is taxable at your regular income tax rate, not subject to Social Security or Medicare taxes.

Thanks! So it's just added to my regular W-2 income then? Should I set aside money for what I might owe?

yeah i had the same thing happen last year, owed like $1200 extra because of unemployment. make sure you have the 1099-G handy when you file

Pro tip: if you're using tax software like TurboTax or H&R Block, there's usually a specific section for unemployment income. It will ask about your 1099-G and automatically put it in the right place. Don't try to enter it as W-2 wages or anything like that.

This is really helpful! I was worried I'd mess something up. Did you have any issues getting your 1099-G from NYS Department of Labor? Mine took forever to show up.

You can actually download it from your my.ny.gov account if you haven't received the paper copy yet. Go to the unemployment section and look for tax documents.

Had to deal with NYS Department of Labor for months last year and the tax thing was just another headache. At least the 1099-G was accurate unlike half the other stuff they sent me. Make sure the amount matches what you actually received because I've heard of errors.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor about any 1099-G issues or discrepancies, I had good luck using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals when I needed to verify my tax documents.

Interesting, never heard of that service. Did they charge you anything for helping get through?

sounds sketchy to me, why would you need a service to call unemployment?

It's legit - they basically handle the calling and waiting for you. Really helpful when you can't get through the normal way and need to resolve something time-sensitive like tax document errors.
