What is unemployment taxes - confused about NYS Department of Labor tax requirements
I'm really confused about unemployment taxes and what I need to know for my NYS Department of Labor claim. I started collecting unemployment benefits two months ago and someone told me I might owe taxes on it? I thought unemployment was supposed to help when you're broke, not create more problems. Do I need to pay taxes on my weekly benefits? Should I be setting money aside? I'm already struggling to pay rent with what little I get from NYS Department of Labor. Can someone explain what unemployment taxes actually means and if there's anything I need to do now or just wait until tax season?

Yes, unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor are considered taxable income by both federal and state governments. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments (10% federal, 3.544% state) or pay them when you file your tax return. To set up withholding, log into your my.ny.gov account and update your payment preferences under the tax withholding section.

•Oh no, I had no idea! I've been getting $420 a week and haven't had anything withheld. How much am I going to owe come tax time?

I learned this the hard way last year - owed almost $2000 in taxes on my unemployment benefits and had no money saved. NYS Department of Labor should really make this more clear when you file your initial claim. Now I always tell people to have the taxes taken out automatically, even if it means less money each week.

•Exactly this happened to me too! Got hit with a huge tax bill and had to set up a payment plan with IRS. Definitely better to have it withheld upfront.

•I know it seems counterintuitive, but unemployment benefits replace your regular wages, and wages are taxable income. The government treats it the same way for tax purposes.

If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to set up tax withholding, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an agent quickly. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. I was able to update my withholding preferences the same day instead of waiting weeks to get through on the phone.

•Thanks for this! I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for days but keep getting disconnected. I'll check out that site.

The tax thing is frustrating but you can also just set aside money yourself if you don't want to reduce your weekly payments. I put about 15% of each payment into a separate savings account for taxes. That way I have the full amount when I need it and don't have to stress about owing money I don't have.

•That's a good idea. I'm going to start doing this with my next payment. Better to be prepared than get surprised later.
