Need advice on returning NY unemployment overpayment - registered mail vs certified?

Just got a notice that I was overpaid $650 from NY unemployment after my job brought me back part-time in December. Apparently I reported my hours wrong for 2 weeks in January. I want to send the payment back ASAP but I'm paranoid about it getting lost. Has anyone returned money to the unemployment office before? Should I use registered mail or certified mail? I'm worried because my neighbor had a similar situation and sent a check that supposedly never arrived, and they ended up getting their tax return garnished anyway. If no one signs for the mail when it arrives, will they just return it to me? I'd rather just pay it and be done with this nightmare.

I sent my overpayment back last month ($842) using certified mail with return receipt. They never sent me the receipt back but when I called they confirmed they got it. I made a copy of the check and the envelope before sending it, and took pictures of everything just in case they try to say they didnt receive it.

Smart! I'll definitely take pictures too. Did you send a money order or personal check?

I used a money order. Didn't trust them with my checking account info after everything else they've messed up tbh šŸ™„

YES! Write your claim ID on everything. I put it on the money order memo line and on a note I included. Better safe than sorry with these ppl

After trying for WEEKS to reach someone at unemployment, I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to an actual person who helped me sort out my overpayment situation. Talking to a real agent was the best money I ever spent - they explained exactly where to send it and what to include. Got a confirmation number and everything, so I know they received my payment. Here's a video about how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

this sounds like an ad... does this actually work? I've been on hold with ny unemployment for 2 hours everyday this week

0 coins

Yeah it works! I was super skeptical too but was desperate after spending like 8 hours on hold across 3 days. They call and wait on hold for you, then when a real person picks up, they connect the call to your phone. Saved me so much time and stress.

hmm I've been burned by so many of these 'services' before... what makes this different? The unemployment system is such a disaster rn

0 coins

It's different cuz it actually works lol. They don't claim to fix your unemployment issues - they just get you through to a real person who can help. That was impossible for me to do on my own.

another day, another company promising to fix the unfixable unemployment system lol. But if it worked for you maybe i'll check it out, I'm desperate at this point

I had a $780 overpayment in March. I used certifed mail with return receipt AND took a video of me packaging everything up and dropping it off at the post office. They are so disorganized I wasn't taking any chances. It took them 8 weeks to process my payment, but they finally did.

NEVER send cash!! My cousin made that mistake and it "disappeared" 🤬 Use a money order and send it certified mail so you get proof of delivery. Also call them after a few weeks to confirm they got it. The wait times are horrible - I was on hold for 3+ hours, but it's worth it to get confirmation.

Who on earth would send cash in the mail?? That's just asking for it to be stolen šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

You'd be suprised. My cousin isn't the brightest bulb in the box lmao. But the NY unemployment people should have done better.

Here's what I learned from sending back my overpayment to NY unemployment (the hard way): • ALWAYS use certified mail with return receipt - this gives you proof they received it • Include a letter with your full name, claim ID number, and reason for the payment • Make a photocopy of your check/money order before sending • Take pictures of everything including the sealed envelope • Call after 2-3 weeks to confirm they received it • If they say they didn't receive it, you'll have your proof • Keep all receipts for at least a year The system is completely overwhelmed right now, and things get lost ALL THE TIME. I had to fight for months because they claimed they never got my payment. Without my certified mail receipt, I would have been screwed. If you need to actually talk to someone (which I HIGHLY recommend before sending anything), use Claimyr.com - they'll get you through to a real person. It helped me confirm exactly where to send my payment and what to include with it. Saved me tons of headaches.

THIS!!! šŸ‘† follow this advice exactly. The unemployment office lost my payment and I had to send it TWICE. Keep records of EVERYTHING

Thank you so much for this detailed advice! I'll definitely be following these steps. Did you call them before sending the payment or after?

I called before AND after. Before to make sure I had the right address and process, after to confirm they got it. Trust no one in this process lol

don't bother with registered mail, certified is enough. registered is way more expensive and they both do basically the same thing for this purpose. i sent mine certified last week, $430 smh

whatever you do DO NOT send it regular mail!!!! I did that and they claim they never got it. now they're taking it from my tax refund plus a 15% penalty. I have no way to prove I sent it. learn from my mistake 😭

omg that's horrible!! how much did they take? can you appeal?

they took the original $580 plus like $87 in penalties. i tried to appeal but without proof I actually sent it, they denied me.

if ur worried about snail mail issues, u can actually pay online through their portal. I did that for my $575 overpayment. Go to your unemployment account, look for 'make a payment' option. Printed the confirmation and screenshot it too just in case.

0 coins

Wait WHAT? I didn't see an option to pay online! That would be so much easier. Did you have to do anything special to see that option?

Log in to ur account, go to payment history, then there should be an option about repayments. If you don't see it maybe call them? The online system is different for everyone some reason šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

0 coins

I just checked mine and don't see that option either. Maybe it depends on what type of overpayment it is?

Pro tip: When I had this issue, I couldn't get thru on the phone for weeks. Finally used claimyr.com to connect with an agent who told me EXACTLY where to send my payment and what info to include. Got it resolved in one day after struggling for weeks. Worth every penny to avoid the garnishment that was about to happen.

0 coins

wait does that actually work? I've never been able to get through on the unemployment line

•

100% yes. They wait on hold for you and call when a real person picks up. Saved me literal days of my life on hold.

If you're in NYC area, you can actually go to one of the career centers and pay in person! I did this for my overpayment and got a receipt right away. No worries about mail issues. Just bring ID and all your paperwork.

This is smart! Do you need an appointment though? I heard those places are super crowded now

0 coins

I went to the one in Brooklyn, got there when they opened at 8:30am. Had to wait about an hour but way better than dealing with mail or sitting on hold forever.

Which center did you go to? I'm in Queens and would rather just do this in person too

Bro they sent me an overpayment notice for $825 even tho I never got any extra money 🤬 Called for weeks with no answer. Finally just paid it certified mail because they threatened to take my tax return. The whole system is a scam.

0 coins

You shoulda disputed it! I got a wrong notice too and fought it (eventually won). Don't just pay if it's not right!

•

How tf do you dispute when nobody answers the phone?? I tried for 3 weeks straight

Should've used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent. That's how I disputed mine. Got it canceled in one phone call once I could actually talk to someone.

Ask for a waiver!!! A lot of people don't know this but if the overpayment wasn't your fault (system error, they miscalculated, etc) you can apply for an overpayment waiver. I got my $490 waived after proving it was their calculation error.

0 coins

How long did the waiver process take? I'm thinking of applying for one

0 coins

Fidel Carson

•

It took about 6 weeks for me. Had to submit bank statements and proof of hardship. Worth trying though!

They denied my waiver even tho it was clearly their mistake. The whole system is rigged.

I'm dealing with this exact problem right now! My husband actually drove to Albany to the main office to pay in person because we were so paranoid about mail issues. Extreme solution but we got a receipt on the spot so šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

NY unemployment is such a joke. They overpaid me, then took 5 MONTHS to cash the check I sent back. Meanwhile they kept sending threatening letters saying I hadn't paid! Make sure you keep DETAILED records of everything.

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you eventually get it sorted out?

0 coins

Thais Soares

•

Yeah but only after I basically harassed them with calls every day for 2 weeks straight. The left hand doesn't know what the right is doing over there.
