NYS Department of Labor office locations - what is an unemployment office exactly?

I'm new to this whole unemployment thing and keep seeing references to 'unemployment offices' but I'm confused about what they actually are. Are these the same as NYS Department of Labor offices? Do I need to visit one in person to file my claim or can everything be done online? I tried looking this up but getting mixed information. My friend said she had to go to an office for her adjudication but I thought everything was digital now. Can someone explain what these offices do and when you actually need to visit one?

Yes, unemployment offices are NYS Department of Labor career centers and local offices. Most claim filing is done online through my.ny.gov now, but you might need to visit for specific situations like appeals hearings, identity verification issues, or if you can't access the online system. Each office provides job search assistance, career counseling, and can help with technical problems with your claim.

Thank you! So I don't need to go in person just to file my weekly claims then? That's a relief.

I had to go to the Westchester office last month because my adjudication was stuck for 6 weeks. Turns out there was an identity verification flag on my account that couldn't be resolved online. The staff there were actually really helpful and got it sorted same day. You can find office locations on the NYS Department of Labor website under 'Career Centers.

How long did you have to wait for an appointment? I've been trying to get through on the phone for weeks about my adjudication.

I didn't make an appointment, just walked in during their open hours. But if you're having trouble reaching them by phone, I actually used this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual NYS Department of Labor agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

ughhh the whole system is so confusing! why cant they just call them NYS Department of Labor offices instead of unemployment offices?? makes it sound like some separate thing when its all the same agency

I think people just use 'unemployment office' as shorthand since that's the main reason most of us interact with NYS Department of Labor unfortunately

Just to clarify - the physical offices are called 'Career Centers' officially but everyone calls them unemployment offices. They handle UI claims, job search requirements, workforce development programs, and employer services all in one location. Most are open Monday-Friday but hours vary by location.

Been dealing with unemployment for years unfortunately and honestly you rarely need to go in person anymore unless something goes really wrong with your claim or you need help with the computer stuff

As someone who just went through this process, I can confirm that most everything is done online now through the NY.gov portal. The only time I had to visit a physical office was when I had issues with my identity verification that couldn't be resolved through the online system. The staff were helpful, but honestly the online process is much more convenient when it works properly. Just make sure you have all your documentation ready before you start your claim - it saves a lot of headaches later!

That's really helpful to know about the identity verification issues! What kind of documentation did you end up needing? I'm worried I might run into the same problem since I recently moved and my address on my ID doesn't match my current address.
