NYS Department of Labor historical unemployment data - which two countries had highest industrial worker unemployment 1933?
I'm doing some research for a class project about the Great Depression and need to find out which two countries had the highest unemployment rates for industrial workers in 1933. I've been searching through NYS Department of Labor archives and historical unemployment data but can't seem to find specific international comparisons from that time period. Does anyone know where I might find this information? I've already checked the regular unemployment statistics but they don't break it down by industrial workers specifically for that year.

You're probably not going to find that specific breakdown in NYS Department of Labor records since they focus on New York state data. For international historical unemployment statistics from 1933, you'd want to check academic databases or the Bureau of Labor Statistics historical archives. The Great Depression hit different countries at different times and with varying severity.

•Thanks! I didn't think about checking BLS archives. Do you know if they have international data going back that far?

Your best bet is probably NBER (National Bureau of Economic Research) or OECD historical statistics if you can access them through your school library. NYS Department of Labor data from that era would only cover New York state anyway. Try searching for 'industrial unemployment 1933' in academic databases like JSTOR.

•Perfect, I have access to JSTOR through my school. I'll try that search term and see what comes up.

Wait why are you looking at NYS Department of Labor for international data? That doesn't make sense. You need to use different sources for historical research like this.

•You're right, I was just starting there because I know how to navigate their system. I'll focus on the academic sources mentioned above.
