NYS Department of Labor benefits ending - effects of low unemployment on my claim
My unemployment benefits through NYS Department of Labor are about to run out and I'm wondering about the effects of low unemployment rates on getting extended benefits or finding work. I've been on UI for about 18 weeks now and the job market seems really competitive even though everyone says unemployment is low. Does anyone know which of the following is not an effect of low unemployment - higher wages, more job openings, or actually harder to get hired because employers are pickier? I'm confused because I keep hearing the economy is great but I'm still struggling to find work that pays decent.

Low unemployment typically means MORE job openings and higher wages because employers have to compete for workers. The thing that's NOT an effect of low unemployment is employers being pickier - it's actually the opposite. When unemployment is low, employers often lower their requirements to fill positions.

•That makes sense but why am I having such a hard time then? Should I be less picky about wages?

been looking for work for months too and the low unemployment thing is bs imo. employers still want experience for entry level jobs and the pay is garbage

You might want to check if your local area qualifies for extended benefits. When I was having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor about this, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Really helped me understand my options.

•Thanks! I'll check that out. I've been trying to call NYS Department of Labor for weeks with no luck.

Low unemployment doesn't automatically mean YOU will find a job quickly. Regional differences matter a lot, and some industries are still struggling. The effects of low unemployment include increased worker bargaining power and wage growth, but job search can still be challenging depending on your field and location.
