NY unemployment stopped after I did training but haven't started my part-time job yet
I'm so confused about my NY unemployment benefits situation. I work in an after-school program and got called back starting in September. Last week I completed about 14 hours of paid training, but my actual job doesn't start until September 13th. Now unemployment is asking me all these questions that don't really apply to my situation. I reported 0 hours this week because there was no training, and now they seem to think I quit my job! Does being called back mean I'm considered employed even though I'm not getting paid yet? I hit one of the options but I'm not sure if it was the right one. I'm really stressed because I'll be offered less than half the hours compared to last year. My rent has doubled because I had to move, and I'm also starting a new driving job soon (which I also need to train for first). Those last two weeks of unemployment would really help me get through until October when I actually start getting paychecks. I thought you could collect unemployment while working part-time? Can someone please explain what I should do? I'm really worried I won't get paid anything now!

sounds like ur in a gray area. when i had training hours at my job, i still claimed those as work hours on my weekly cert even tho i didnt get paid right away. the system is stupid cuz it doesnt have options for our exact situations!! when u reported 0 hrs they prob flagged it as inconsistent with ur previous cert. might need to call them to explain.

•Thanks for responding! So should I have reported the training hours even though I didn't get paid for them yet? This is so frustrating. Do you think I should try to call them to explain my situation?

Yes, this is confusing, but here's what's happening: When you reported the training hours last week but zero hours this week, the system flagged it as potential job abandonment. In NY unemployment terms, you need to report ANY hours you worked in a week, even if you haven't been paid for them yet. For training, you should report those hours during the week you actually did the training. The system is asking you questions because it needs to determine if you're still eligible. And yes, you can still collect partial unemployment while working part-time, but your benefit amount will be reduced based on how many hours you work and how much you earn. For each day you work (even partial days), your weekly benefit is reduced by 1/4. My advice: Call NYSDOL immediately to explain the situation. Tell them exactly what happened - that you did training, will start the job on 9/13, and are still available for full-time work. They should be able to resolve the flags on your account.

•Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I'll definitely call NYSDOL to explain everything. I didn't realize I needed to report hours worked even if I wasn't paid yet. This makes a lot more sense now.

Same thing happened to me last year!! The system is so confusing and doesn't account for these weird situations. I think everyone's right that you need to call them, but good luck getting through. I spent 3 days trying to reach someone and kept getting disconnected.

•I had the same frustrating experience trying to reach NYSDOL. What worked for me was using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes instead of spending days calling. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE It really saved me when I was in a similar situation with training hours and weird scheduling that didn't fit the certification questions. The agent was able to fix everything and explain exactly how to report my hours going forward.

Your supposed to report any work activity period. doesnt matter if you got paid or not. unemployment only cares about the HOURS. they dont care when u get paid for em. thats why they asking u questions now.

THIS SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! They expect us to understand all these technical rules but don't explain ANYTHING properly. The questions on the certification are SO VAGUE and don't cover situations like yours that are common. I got flagged for something similar and it took TWO MONTHS to get my benefits back. The worst part is they'll probably make you pay back the money if they decide you answered wrong. Even though it's THEIR FAULT for having such a confusing system!! Definitely call them ASAP. And document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of all your certifications and save any emails or letters. You'll need proof if they try to say you committed fraud when you were just confused by their terrible system.

•Oh no, two months?? I can't wait that long. I really hope they don't make me pay anything back - I was honestly just confused about how to report this situation. I'll definitely save all documentation just in case.

just wanna add that i went through this exact training situation last year and what worked for me was explaining to the agent that i had a definite start date for real work. they have a special code for that in the system. you're not unemployed but not fully employed either.

To clarify further, what's happening is that you've entered what's called a "recall status" situation. This means you have a firm return-to-work date but aren't yet working regular hours. In NY unemployment, you should: 1. Continue certifying weekly 2. Report any and all hours worked (including training) in the week you physically performed them 3. Answer "No" to the question about refusing work 4. If asked if you've returned to work, explain your situation in the comments section For the specific week where you did 14 hours of training, you should have reported those hours even though you weren't paid. For the week with zero hours, you correctly reported zero. Regarding part-time work: When you start your job on 9/13, you can still collect partial benefits if you work less than 30 hours weekly AND earn less than $718 in gross wages in 2025. The formula reduces your benefit rate by 25% for each day (or part of a day) worked.

I just went through this exact situation with my seasonal job. Here's what worked for me: 1. I contacted NYSDOL and explained I had a definite start date but was in a training period 2. They adjusted my claim using a special status code 3. I was able to collect partial benefits during training and the gap period 4. Once I started my regular schedule, I reported those hours properly The tricky part is getting through to someone who understands your situation. I tried calling for days with no luck. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to connect with an agent, and they resolved it right away. Their video explains exactly how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE The agent told me this happens all the time with seasonal and school-related jobs. They're used to fixing it, but you MUST talk to a live person.

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's comforting to know this is fixable. I'm definitely going to try reaching an agent. This Claimyr service sounds like it might save me a lot of frustration.

BTW - make sure you're super clear about both jobs when you talk to them!!! If you don't mention the driving job too, they might fix this situation but then you'll have MORE problems when you start that job. The whole system is designed to trap us in technicalities so they can deny benefits!!

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at NYSDOL! They explained that I should have reported the training hours in the week I did them, even though I wasn't paid yet. They fixed my claim and explained exactly how to report going forward. For anyone in a similar situation: When you have a firm start date but are in a gap period, make sure you report any training hours during the week you actually did the training. And definitely call to explain your situation if the system flags your account. When I start my after-school job on 9/13, I'll need to report those hours each week, and my benefits will be reduced accordingly. The same applies when I start my driving job. Thank you all so much for your help! I was really stressing out about this.
