NY unemployment regular benefits ending but benefit year still active - will extended benefits start automatically?
My regular NY unemployment benefits are about to run out next week (last certification will be this Sunday), but my benefit year end date isn't until January 2026. Does this mean I'll automatically switch to extended benefits? I've read that extended benefits are available until September 2025, but I'm confused about whether I need to apply for them or if the system just rolls me over automatically. Do I need to submit a new application or will NYSDOL handle this transition without me doing anything? Really anxious about any gap in payments since I'm still job hunting.

You should automatically transition to extended benefits if you qualify - you don't need to submit a new application. The system should roll you over, but you'll need to continue certifying weekly as usual. You'll likely receive a message in your online account and/or a letter confirming the transition when it happens. Just make sure you don't miss any weekly certifications during this transition period.

•Thank you so much! That's a relief. I was worried I'd need to submit something and might miss payments. So I just keep certifying like normal this Sunday even though my regular UI is exhausted?

I just went thru this last month. YES keep certifying every week! I got a message in my account after my 2nd certification following the end of regular benefits saying I was approved for extended benefits. Didn't have to do anything else.

•That's great to hear someone just went through this! Did you get any confirmation before your payment hit your account? I'm just worried about planning for bills.

•I got a message in my account first, then the payment came 2 days later. Same amount as before.

•Thanks for the heads up. I'm definitely worried about a delay. I've got just enough for about 2 weeks of expenses if there's a gap.

This is how the NY extended benefits program works for 2025: 1. Keep certifying weekly without interruption 2. The system identifies you've exhausted regular UI 3. An automatic review of your eligibility for extended benefits occurs 4. If eligible, you'll receive a determination notice (EB-8025 form) in your message center 5. Your benefit amount stays the same 6. The extension lasts until either September 2025 or until you reach the maximum benefit amount IMPORTANT: The work search requirements are stricter under extended benefits - you must document at least 5 work search activities per week instead of the usual 3.

•This is incredibly helpful! I didn't know about the increased work search requirements. Do I need to start doing 5 activities right away or only after I get that EB-8025 form?

•You should start doing the 5 work search activities as soon as your regular benefits exhaust. Document everything carefully as NYSDOL does more frequent audits for extended benefit recipients.

I HAD THE WORST EXPERIENCE with this!! The system is COMPLETELY BROKEN! I exhausted my regular benefits in February and it took FIVE WEEKS before I got any extended benefits!!! I kept certifying and it kept saying "pending" with no explanation! Called HUNDREDS of times and couldn't get through!!! My landlord was threatening eviction and NYSDOL didn't care at all!!!

•Oh no, that sounds horrible! Did you ever figure out why it took so long? Was there something wrong with your claim?

•They said it was a "system flag" that needed "manual review" but wouldn't explain more!!! The system is DESIGNED to make people give up!! I only got it fixed when I FINALLY reached a supervisor who fixed it in 2 minutes!!

When I hit this same situation last month, I couldn't get through to anyone at NYSDOL for weeks. I tried calling at different times, using different phones, nothing worked. I was about to give up when someone recommended Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that helps you connect with unemployment agents by holding your place in line. I was skeptical but desperate, so I tried it and got through to an agent in about 40 minutes. They confirmed I was eligible for extended benefits and fixed an issue that would have delayed my payments. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - honestly saved me weeks of stress.

•I've never heard of this before. Does it actually work? I'll check out the video. I'm worried I'll have issues like the person above who waited 5 weeks!

•It worked for me when nothing else did. The video shows exactly how it works. I was dealing with a similar transition issue and getting through to someone solved it immediately rather than waiting for weeks.

My cousin works as a career counselor and she told me the extended benefits can sometimes take an extra week to kick in because they have to review your file but it's supposed to be automatic. But she also said sometimes there's glitches when there's a lot of people transitioning at once which happens at the start of each quarter.

•Ya this is probably why mine was smooth and that other person had problems. I switched over mid-month when probably not many people were transitioning.

Quick update on a policy detail I should clarify: For 2025, NY extended benefits require you to accept suitable work if offered. The definition of "suitable work" is stricter than during regular UI. After 13 weeks on unemployment, you're expected to accept work offers even if: 1. The pay is at least 80% of your previous wage 2. The position is outside your previous occupation 3. The commute is up to 1.5 hours each way Rejecting "suitable work" can jeopardize your extended benefits eligibility.

•That's really important to know - thank you! I've been mainly looking in my field (accounting) but I'll broaden my search. Does it matter if the job offers benefits or not? My previous job had health insurance.

•Benefits aren't considered in the "suitable work" determination. The primary factors are wages, working conditions, and distance. As long as the job meets the 80% wage threshold and other basic criteria, whether it offers health insurance isn't relevant to your UI eligibility.

anyone else notice that the payment hits your account a day later when ur on extended benefits? regular UI always came tuesday for me but extended benefits hits wednesday for some reason

•Mine still comes Tuesday but it's later in the day than it used to be. Maybe depends on your bank?

Update: I certified yesterday for my final week of regular benefits. The system didn't show anything different, but today I got a message in my account saying I'm eligible for extended benefits! It says I need to continue certifying weekly and that my weekly benefit amount will stay the same. It also mentioned the increased work search requirements (5 activities per week). Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

•Great news! This is exactly how it's supposed to work. Make sure you keep detailed records of your work search activities since they do audit extended benefits recipients more frequently. Best of luck with your job search!

•You got LUCKY!! Glad the system actually worked for someone!! Keep a close eye on it though, they randomly stopped my payments twice during extended benefits with no warning!
