NY unemployment claim stuck in pending status after technical difficulties page

Has anyone else been dealing with those AWFUL 'technical difficulties' error pages on the NY unemployment site? I swear I'm ready to throw my laptop out the window 🤦🏻‍♀️ I've been trying to check on my claim status for 3 days now but keep getting kicked back to that stupid error page. Finally managed to get through to someone on the phone today (miracle!!!) and they just told me my claim is in 'pending status' but couldn't explain WHY or how long it might take to process. No help at all! This is my first time filing and I'm getting really worried about paying rent next month. Has anyone been through this recently? How long did your claim stay 'pending' before it went through?

Brady Clean

same thing happened to me last month lol. the site is garbage. kept crashing everytime i tried to certify. i think those error pages are just their way of saying the system is overloaded or something? mine was pending for like 2 weeks before it finally went through

2 WEEKS?? Omg I can't wait that long... did you do anything special to make it go through or just wait?

The technical difficulties page usually means they're doing system maintenance or experiencing high traffic volumes. But regarding your pending status - there are several reasons this might happen: 1. Identity verification issues 2. Employment information that needs verification 3. Earnings discrepancies that need manual review 4. System backlog (most common right now) For most people in March 2025, pending status is taking 7-10 business days to resolve due to the high volume of new claims. If it goes beyond 2 weeks, you should request a callback from an adjudicator who can review your specific case.

Thank you! Is there any way to check WHICH of those reasons is holding up my claim? The person I talked to couldn't (or wouldn't) tell me anything specific.

Unfortunately, regular call center agents often can't see the specific hold reason. You need to speak with a claims specialist or adjudicator - they have access to the detailed notes on your claim. But getting through to them is the real challenge right now with call volumes so high.

the pending status is THE WORST!!!! i had to wait 3 WEEKS back in january and nearly got evicted. called like 200 times and could never get through. the whole system is designed to make you give up. they WANT people to get frustrated and stop trying to claim what they deserve. typical ny government garbage!!!

3 weeks??? That's terrifying. I'm already behind on bills from being laid off. Did you ever find out why it was pending for so long?

Had the exact same issue with the technical difficulties page constantly showing up in February. My claim was pending for 9 days, and I discovered the reason was they needed to verify my last employer's response to the claim. If you need to speak with someone about the specific reason for your pending status, try calling right when they open at 8:00am, but honestly even that's become nearly impossible lately. After trying for days, I used a service called Claimyr that got me through to a rep in under 30 minutes when I'd been failing for days. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE that shows how it works. Worth every penny for the stress it saved me!

Thank you for this suggestion! I've been trying to call at 8am but there's already a queue by then. I'll check out that service - I'm desperate at this point.

@profile7 I was skeptical too at first, but it actually worked for me. It basically keeps dialing and navigating the phone system until it gets through, then calls you. The website explains it better than I can: claimyr.com

Have you tried using a different browser or clearing your cache? Sometimes that technical error is just a browser issue. As for the pending status, my sister-in-law just went through this and hers was pending because she accidentally entered her birthdate wrong (typo) and it flagged her account for manual review. Took 12 days to resolve. Check all your personal info to make sure everything's correct!

I've tried Chrome, Firefox and even Microsoft Edge (desperate times...). Same error on all of them. I did double-check my info and everything seems correct as far as I can tell. Maybe I should try on my phone instead of laptop?

Definitely try your phone! The mobile site sometimes works better. Also try early morning or late night when fewer people are on the system.

The technical difficulties page is frustrating but normal, especially during high traffic periods (mornings and lunch hours are worst). For your pending claim, here are some proactive steps you can take: 1. Log in during off-hours (late evening around 9pm-11pm) when the system is less likely to crash 2. Check your Message Center in your account to see if they've requested any additional documents 3. Make sure you continue certifying weekly even while your claim is pending 4. If it's been more than 10 business days, you should request a supervisor when calling The current average processing time for new claims is 8-12 business days in the NY system if there are no issues flagged for review. If there's something they need to verify, it can take 14-21 business days.

does anyone know why my claim says "pending-alternate base period review" instead of just "pending"? is that different???

@profile8 "Pending-alternate base period review" means they're calculating your eligibility based on your alternate quarters of employment (usually the most recent completed quarter) because your standard base period may not qualify you for benefits. This is actually a good thing as it means they're trying to find a way to qualify you. This specific review usually adds 5-7 business days to the process.

Thank you for this info! I didn't know about the Message Center - I'll check that tonight. And I've been worried about certifying while it's pending (wasn't sure if I should), so thanks for confirming I should keep doing that.

u know what's INFURIATING? when u finally get through to someone & they just tell you to "wait" like that helps pay the bills!!! i bet if THEY weren't getting paychecks they'd fix the system real quick!!!

Update: I tried that Claimyr service someone mentioned and actually got through to a specialist! They explained my claim was pending because my former employer hadn't responded to their inquiry yet (they have 10 days apparently). The agent put a note to expedite once that deadline passes, which is in 2 days. So relieved to at least know what's happening now! Thanks everyone for your help and commiseration. Will update when/if my status changes.

Glad it worked for you! That's exactly the issue I had too - waiting on employer verification. Once they hit that 10-day mark it should move pretty quickly.

That's great news! And yes, employers have 10 business days to respond to the claim notice. If they don't respond by the deadline, NYSDOL will typically process the claim based on the information you provided. Make sure you keep certifying each week while waiting!
