Lost job and wondering if mortgage insurance covers unemployment - need NYS Department of Labor claim guidance
I was laid off from my construction job last month and I'm trying to figure out if my mortgage protection insurance will help while I'm unemployed. I have a policy through my bank but the fine print is confusing. More importantly, I need to file for unemployment benefits but I'm not sure how this might affect any mortgage insurance claims. Has anyone dealt with both unemployment and mortgage insurance at the same time? I'm worried about making a mistake that could mess up either claim. Should I file my NYS Department of Labor claim first before contacting my mortgage company?

File your unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor immediately - don't wait! Mortgage insurance and unemployment benefits are completely separate things. Your UI claim won't affect mortgage insurance and vice versa. Most mortgage protection policies do cover unemployment but you'll need to read your specific policy terms. The unemployment claim should be your priority since there's a waiting period.

•Thanks! I was worried they might somehow conflict. I'll start the NYS Department of Labor application today.

Yes, many mortgage protection insurance policies do cover unemployment situations, but the coverage varies a lot. Some only pay for 6-12 months, others have waiting periods before benefits kick in. You need to call your mortgage company or insurance provider directly to find out your specific coverage. Meanwhile, definitely get your unemployment claim filed ASAP.

•This is good advice. My mortgage insurance had a 30-day waiting period for unemployment coverage, so the sooner you start both processes the better.

I've been trying to reach NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my claim status and can never get through on the phone. If you need to talk to someone about your unemployment benefits, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to an agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•That sounds helpful! I hate being on hold forever. Did they charge a lot for the service?

•It was worth it to actually speak to someone at NYS Department of Labor instead of just getting hung up on constantly.

mortgage insurance is different from unemployment insurance just so you know... one pays your mortgage if you can't work, the other gives you weekly payments from the state. You can definitely apply for both at the same time.

The NYS Department of Labor website has gotten better but it's still confusing to navigate. When you file your weekly claims, make sure you report any income from insurance payouts if your mortgage insurance gives you cash payments directly. But if they just pay your mortgage company directly, that shouldn't affect your UI benefits. Keep good records of everything just in case there are questions later during adjudication.

•Good point about reporting income. I hadn't thought about that aspect. I'll make sure to keep detailed records of what payments go where.

ugh the whole system is so confusing when you're already stressed about losing your job!! I went through this last year and it took forever to figure out what I was entitled to. Just take it one step at a time and don't let them overwhelm you with paperwork.

I went through something similar when I lost my job in manufacturing. The key thing is that unemployment benefits and mortgage protection insurance are completely separate - you can and should pursue both. For NYS Department of Labor, file online as soon as possible since there's typically a one-week waiting period before benefits start. Don't let the mortgage insurance paperwork delay your UI claim. Most mortgage protection policies do cover job loss, but they often have their own waiting periods (mine was 60 days) and may only cover a portion of your payment. Call your lender's insurance department directly - they can walk you through your specific coverage. Keep all your layoff documentation handy for both claims. You've got this!
