Does unemployment come out of social security benefits in NY?
I'm really confused about something and hoping someone can help clarify. My mom is on social security disability and she thinks that if I file for unemployment with NYS Department of Labor, it will somehow reduce her social security payments. She's worried that unemployment benefits are connected to the social security system and that my claim might affect her benefits. Is this true? I've been out of work for 2 weeks and need to file but don't want to mess up her disability payments. Does anyone know if unemployment and social security are connected like this?

No, unemployment insurance and Social Security are completely separate systems! Your unemployment claim with NYS Department of Labor has absolutely nothing to do with your mom's Social Security disability benefits. UI is funded through employer payroll taxes, while Social Security is funded through FICA taxes. They don't interact at all - you filing for unemployment won't affect her payments in any way.

•Thank you so much! That's such a relief. I was really worried about messing up her benefits. So I can go ahead and file my weekly claims without any concerns about her social security?

Your mom might be thinking about the old myth that unemployment 'comes out of' social security taxes. What actually happens is that unemployment insurance is funded by taxes that employers pay - it's called SUTA (State Unemployment Tax Act) and FUTA (Federal Unemployment Tax Act). Employees don't even pay into the unemployment system directly. Social Security is completely different - that comes from FICA taxes on your paychecks.

•This is exactly right. I used to work in payroll and can confirm - unemployment insurance taxes are paid entirely by employers. Social Security taxes come out of employee paychecks but those two systems never interact.

been on both unemployment and had family on social security and never had any issues. totally separate things! file your claim asap though because you can't get benefits for weeks before you file

•Good point about filing quickly! I'll get my application in today. Just needed to make sure about the social security thing first.

If you're having trouble getting through to NYS Department of Labor to ask questions like this, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI and their site is claimyr.com. Really useful when you need to talk to someone at NYS Department of Labor but can't get through the busy phone lines.

•Yeah it worked for me! Saved me hours of trying to call and getting busy signals. Worth checking out the demo video to see how it works.

UGH this is exactly the kind of confusing information that makes the whole unemployment system so frustrating! Why can't NYS Department of Labor make this stuff clearer on their website? Your mom shouldn't have to worry about things like this but they don't explain how different benefit systems work. At least now you know they're separate but seriously, the lack of clear information is maddening.

Just wanted to add that if your mom is still worried, she can always call the Social Security Administration directly to confirm that unemployment benefits won't affect her disability payments. They have a customer service line and can give her peace of mind from the official source. But everyone here is absolutely right - these are two completely separate government programs with different funding sources and eligibility requirements. Your unemployment claim through NYS Department of Labor has zero impact on her Social Security disability benefits. Go ahead and file your claim - you've already waited 2 weeks and shouldn't delay any longer!

•That's a great suggestion about calling Social Security directly! Having them confirm it officially would definitely put my mom's mind at ease. She's the type of person who worries about everything affecting her benefits, so hearing it straight from SSA would be perfect. Thanks for the reassurance - I'm definitely filing today!

Just to add another perspective - I'm a former NYS Department of Labor employee and can confirm everything everyone has said here. Unemployment insurance and Social Security are administered by completely different federal and state agencies. UI falls under the Department of Labor system (both federal and state level), while Social Security is handled by the Social Security Administration. There's literally no computer system or database connection between them that would allow one to affect the other. Your mom's Social Security disability is based on her work history and medical condition - your employment status or unemployment benefits have absolutely zero bearing on her eligibility or payment amount. File your claim ASAP since you're already behind by 2 weeks!
