Do I need a separation notice to file for unemployment in NYS?
I just got laid off from my retail job yesterday and I want to file for unemployment benefits ASAP. My manager said they'll mail me some paperwork but I'm not sure when I'll get it. Do I actually need to wait for a separation notice before I can start my claim with NYS Department of Labor? I'm worried about delays since I heard there's a waiting period. Also not sure if I should file online or call - has anyone had better luck with one method over the other?

No, you don't need to wait for the separation notice to file your initial claim. You can file immediately after your last day of work. The NYS Department of Labor will contact your employer directly to verify the separation details. File online at my.ny.gov - it's much faster than calling. You'll need your Social Security number, driver's license, and employment history for the past 18 months including employer names, addresses, and dates worked.

•Thanks! Should I file today even though my last day was yesterday? I want to make sure I don't mess up the timing.

definitely file asap! i waited like a week thinking i needed paperwork and it just delayed everything. the separation notice helps but its not required to start your claim

I had a similar situation last year - got laid off and filed the same day without any separation paperwork. The NYS Department of Labor system walks you through everything step by step. One thing though - if you're having trouble reaching them by phone later for questions, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of busy signals when I needed to check on my claim status.

•Wait is that legit? I've been trying to call for weeks about my adjudication issue

The separation notice mostly just confirms what you already know - your last day, reason for separation, etc. When you file online you'll answer questions about why you're no longer working and the NYS Department of Labor will verify with your employer. Don't wait - file immediately. Your benefit year starts the week you file, not when you separated from work.
