Yes, being laid off definitely qualifies you for unemployment benefits in New York. Since you were let go due to no fault of your own (company downsizing), you should be eligible. You'll need to file your claim as soon as possible on the NYS Department of Labor website. Make sure you have your social security number, driver's license, and employment history ready when you apply.

thank you! do i need any paperwork from my employer or can i just apply online with the info i have?

You can apply online at labor.ny.gov without paperwork from your employer initially. The NYS Department of Labor will contact your former employer to verify the reason for separation. Since you worked 8 months full-time, you should meet the base period earnings requirement. Processing time varies but expect 2-4 weeks for your first payment if there are no issues with your claim.

Just want to add that you need to file your weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is being processed, otherwise you could lose benefits for those weeks.

ugh the NYS Department of Labor system is so confusing though! I got laid off 6 months ago and it took FOREVER to get through to anyone when my claim got stuck in adjudication. Make sure you keep calling if something goes wrong because their online messaging system is useless.

I had the same problem with getting through to NYS Department of Labor on the phone. If you need to speak to an agent quickly, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

One thing to keep in mind - you'll need to be actively looking for work and keeping a log of your job search activities. NYS Department of Labor requires you to make at least 3 work search contacts per week. They can ask to see your records at any time so keep detailed notes of where you applied, when, and any responses you received.
