TurboTax says my tax return was REJECTED for AGI mismatch - what now?
Just got a message from TurboTax saying my 2024 return was rejected because my 2023 AGI doesn't match IRS records. Seriously?? I filed electronically last year with TT as well and had zero problems. The rejection message says I need to verify my AGI from last year's return. I've checked my 2023 tax return PDF and entered the exact AGI amount from line 11 on my 1040, but TurboTax still won't accept it. This is crazy frustrating because I was counting on that refund next month. Anyone know how to resolve this or why this is happening? Do I need to call the IRS? I heard thats basically impossible. Or is there some other trick to getting this fixed with TurboTax?

This is a common issue many filers face. When your e-filed return is rejected due to AGI mismatch, here are the steps you should take: • First, double-check that you're entering the EXACT AGI from your 2023 tax return (line 11 on Form 1040) • If you amended your 2023 return, use the original AGI, not the amended one • If you filed jointly last year but are filing separately this year (or vice versa), this can cause issues • If your 2023 return is still processing, the IRS might not have your AGI on file yet - in this case, use $0 as your prior year AGI If none of these solutions work, you can: 1. Try printing and mailing your return instead (longer processing time though) 2. Use a transcript analysis tool like taxr.ai to check exactly what AGI the IRS has on file for you 3. Call the IRS, though wait times are notoriously long Getting rejected is frustrating but fixable - no need to panic!

•Thanks for this detailed response! I did check the original 1040 and I'm definitely using the right number. My 2023 return was processed and I already received that refund like 10 months ago. I might try the $0 trick though. Have you used that taxr.ai thing? Worth it?

•Yes, taxr.ai is definitely worth it. It analyzes your transcript to show exactly what the IRS has on record, so you can see the exact AGI they're expecting. Saved me hours of frustrated guessing when I had a similar issue last filing season.

•I tried the $0 trick last year and it worked for me! IRS system can be so glitchy smh

•I'll give the $0 a try first and then check out taxr if that doesn't work. Just wanna get this submitted already!

After pulling my hair out with the EXACT same issue, I finally used taxr.ai and it solved my problem in minutes! Instead of just guessing what might be wrong or trying to decode those confusing IRS transcripts myself, it showed me exactly why my return was getting rejected. Turns out the AGI the IRS had on file was different than what was on my return copy because of an adjustment they made. The tool explained everything in plain English and showed me what number to use. Honestly wish I'd found it before wasting days trying to figure it out on my own. Here's the link if anyone else is dealing with this: https://taxr.ai

•Sounds interesting. How exactly does it work? Does it just read your transcript or does it do more?

•It does way more than just read it! It completely breaks down everything on your transcript in normal human language, explains all those weird codes, tells you exactly what's happening with your tax situation, and gives you specific next steps. Like having a tax pro instantly analyze everything for you. Absolutely worth checking out.

•OMG I JUST TRIED IT AND IT WORKED!!! After weeks of confusion, I finally know exactly what's going on with my taxes. This should be way more widely known! Thanks for sharing this - literally saved me from a mental breakdown dealing with the IRS 🙏

•sounds like another paid service... does it actually work or is it just taking your $$?

•Nah it's legit. I was skeptical too but it's the only thing that could explain what was going on with my return. The answers were super specific to my situation - not some generic advice you can google. Honestly, it's the best money I've spent on anything tax-related.

•I was hesitant too but it's absolutely worth every penny. I spent HOURS trying to make sense of my transcript and this tool did it instantly. Life changing when you're dealing with IRS issues!

After spinning my wheels with TurboTax rejections for almost 2 weeks, I finally found a way to talk to an actual IRS human about my AGI issue. Used Claimyr.com to get through to an agent who fixed my problem in like 10 minutes! Turns out there was a typo in their system that kept causing the rejection. The agent was able to see it right away and tell me exactly what number to use instead. My return got accepted immediately after. I was on the phone with a real person in under an hour after weeks of frustration!

•Wait for real? I thought it was impossible to reach the IRS these days. How does this Claimyr thing work?

•It's this service that navigates all the IRS phone menus for you and holds your place in line, then calls you when an agent is about to pick up. Talking to someone directly is the ONLY way I got this resolved - the agent could see exactly what was wrong in their system. Totally worth it to get my refund moving again.

•100% works. I was skeptical too but was desperate after my 5th rejection. Got connected to an agent who pulled up my file and immediately spotted the issue. Best decision I made, especially since I was counting on that refund.

Ugh, I had this EXACT problem last month. After trying everything, I ended up just printing and mailing my return. Not ideal because paper returns take forever to process, but at least it's submitted. The whole e-file system is broken af this year.

This happened to me too! Make sure you're looking at the right line 11 on form 1040. Also, if you received any unemployment last year that might have changed your AGI from what you originally filed. Check your IRS account online if you have one.

Oliver Fischer
•I double-checked and I'm definitely looking at line 11. I didn't have any unemployment either. Guess I'll try to create an IRS account but I heard that's a whole process too 😩

•Try entering $0 as your prior AGI. sounds crazy but works for a lot of people. the irs systems are totally broken this year

Sometimes TurboTax itself is the problem. I had the same issue and switched to FreeTaxUSA and it went through first try with the exact same information. The IRS AGI verification system is notoriously glitchy.

•THIS!!! 👆 I also switched from TT to FreeTaxUSA for the same reason. Much cheaper too lmao

•I've heard good things about FreeTaxUSA but I already paid for TurboTax 🤦♂️ Maybe I'll try it next year tho

If you can't get it to work with your actual AGI, try entering $0 instead. That worked for me. Apparently if your return from last year had any adjustments or is still being processed, the IRS wants you to use $0.

•I'll try this tonight! My return was processed last year but maybe there was an adjustment I didn't know about.

pro tip: use taxr.ai to see exactly what AGI the IRS has on file for you. saved me soooo much time when i had this exact problem. the IRS had adjusted my return after i filed last year so the AGI in their system was different than what was on my copy.

•Totally legit, it basically translates all the IRS gibberish into plain english. Found out exactly why my return was getting rejected when nothing else worked. Highly recommend if youre stuck.

•I second this! taxr.ai is a game changer for dealing with the IRS. Shows you exactly what's happening with your tax situation without having to decode all those cryptic transcripts yourself.

I just checked my copy of last year's return too and the rejection code Im getting seems bogus. the IRS is such a mess this year. I tried entering $0 as my prior year AGI and for some reason that worked. Refund already approved. 🤷♂️

Check if your state of residency changed or if you had a name change (like got married). Both of those can cause AGI issues even if the number is correct.

•Nope, same name, same state. Nothing changed from last year which is why this is so frustrating!

Had this exact same nightmare last year! After trying everything - double checking my AGI, using $0, even creating an IRS account - nothing worked. Finally gave up on TurboTax and just paper filed. Yeah it took forever to get processed but at least it went through. The whole e-file system seems super glitchy this year. If you're really stuck and need that refund ASAP, you might want to try one of those services people mentioned to actually talk to someone at the IRS. Sometimes there's just a weird glitch in their system that only they can fix.

•This is so helpful to hear from someone who went through the same thing! I'm really hoping I don't have to resort to paper filing since I need my refund soon, but it's good to know that's an option that actually works. I'm going to try the $0 trick first since a few people mentioned it worked for them, and if that doesn't work I might look into those services to talk to the IRS directly. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I went through this exact same frustration last month! The AGI mismatch rejection is so common this year. Here's what finally worked for me after trying everything: 1. First try entering $0 as your prior year AGI - this works if the IRS made any adjustments to your 2023 return after you filed 2. Double-check you're using the AGI from your ORIGINAL 2023 return, not any amended version 3. Make sure you're looking at line 11 on Form 1040 (not line 9 or any other line) If those don't work, you have a few options: - Switch to a different tax software like FreeTaxUSA (sometimes it's just a TurboTax glitch) - Paper file your return (slower but guaranteed to work) - Get your IRS transcript to see exactly what AGI they have on file The $0 trick worked for me even though I was 100% sure my AGI was correct. The IRS systems are super glitchy this year. Don't panic - this is totally fixable! You'll get your refund, it just might take a little troubleshooting.

•This is such a comprehensive breakdown, thank you! I'm definitely going to try the $0 trick first since so many people here have said it worked for them. It's honestly ridiculous that the IRS systems are this glitchy - like how hard is it to match a number correctly? 🙄 But at least it sounds like there are multiple ways to get around this issue. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, makes me feel less crazy for dealing with this mess!

This AGI mismatch issue is driving me crazy too! I've been dealing with the same rejection for over a week now. What's really frustrating is that I triple-checked my 2023 AGI from line 11 and it's definitely correct. I even pulled up my PDF copy and compared it character by character. I'm seeing a lot of people mention trying $0 as the prior year AGI - that seems counterintuitive but if it works, I'll definitely give it a shot. Has anyone figured out WHY this is happening so much this year? Like is it a system-wide IRS glitch or something with TurboTax specifically? I'm also curious about those transcript services people are mentioning. Might be worth it just to see what the IRS actually has on file vs what I think they should have. This whole situation is making me want to switch tax software next year honestly.

•I feel your pain! I've been lurking here trying to figure out my own AGI rejection issue. From what I'm seeing, it seems like there's definitely something systemically wrong this year - way too many people having the exact same problem for it to be coincidental. The $0 trick does sound weird but I'm seeing so many success stories that I'm convinced it's legit. I think what's happening is the IRS made backend adjustments to people's 2023 returns that we never got notified about, so their system expects a different AGI than what's on our copies. Those transcript services like taxr.ai that people keep mentioning might be the fastest way to figure out what's actually going on. Beats spending hours guessing or waiting on hold with the IRS! Let me know if the $0 thing works for you - I'm about to try it myself tonight.

This AGI mismatch rejection is such a widespread issue this filing season! I went through this exact same frustration a few weeks ago. After trying everything - double-checking my 2023 AGI multiple times, creating an IRS online account, even calling their helpline (total waste of time) - what finally worked was the $0 trick that several people mentioned here. I know it sounds completely backwards to enter $0 when you KNOW your AGI is correct, but apparently the IRS systems are expecting this if they made any backend adjustments to your 2023 return that you weren't notified about. It's like their left hand doesn't know what their right hand is doing. If the $0 doesn't work, I'd definitely recommend checking out those transcript analysis tools people mentioned or using a service to actually get through to an IRS agent. Sometimes there are weird system glitches that only they can see and fix on their end. Don't let TurboTax drive you crazy - this isn't your fault and it's definitely fixable! The IRS e-file system has been a hot mess this year but your refund will come through once you get past this hurdle.
