Started a 2nd job in December and my tax refund suddenly dropped $1200 in TurboTax
Hey everyone, I'm losing my mind here. I've always filed with TurboTax and everything was going great this year. I was on track for about a $3,100 refund based on my main job where I've worked all year. Then last week I entered my W-2 from this side gig I started in mid-December. I only made about $870 there before the year ended, but as soon as I entered that W-2, TurboTax showed my refund DROPPING by $1,200! How does making a little extra money cost me over a grand in refunds? I double-checked everything and both W-2s look correct. The withholding on the second job seems normal too. I'm not in a different tax bracket or anything that I can tell. Anyone else have this happen? Is this some kind of TurboTax glitch or am I missing something obvious? I was counting on that money for some car repairs and now I'm completely stressed out.

This isn't a glitch - it's actually a common tax situation when you work multiple jobs. Here's what's likely happening: When you have one job, your employer withholds taxes assuming that's your only income. When you add a second job, that employer is also withholding taxes assuming their income is your only source. But your actual tax rate is based on your combined income from both jobs. The $870 from your second job pushed your total income higher, but the withholding from that job probably wasn't enough to cover the actual taxes owed on that additional income. That's why your refund dropped - you earned more but didn't have enough additional tax withheld to cover it. You can check this by looking at the "Tax" line on your return before and after adding the second W-2. The total tax you owe probably increased by more than the amount that was withheld from that second job.

•Ugh, that makes sense but it seems so unfair! So I'm essentially getting punished for picking up extra work? The second job only withheld like $65 in federal taxes but my refund dropped by $1,200. How does that math work out?

•You're not being punished for working more - you're just seeing how tax withholding works across multiple jobs. Your second job only withheld $65, but the actual tax on that $870 of additional income is likely much higher based on your overall tax bracket. Remember that your refund isn't free money - it's just the government returning money you overpaid throughout the year. What happened is that your first job was withholding enough to give you a big refund, but that calculation changed when you added more income with minimal withholding.

I had almost the exact same thing happen to me last year! I tried using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it saved me so much stress. You can upload your W-2s there and it breaks down exactly why your refund changed. The tool showed me that my second job didn't withhold nearly enough based on my actual tax bracket from my combined income. What I love is that it doesn't just tell you what went wrong, but also shows you how to fix it for next year. It recommended exactly how much extra I should have withheld from each paycheck to avoid this problem in the future.

•Does it work with state taxes too? I'm having a similar issue but most of my refund drop seems to be on the state side.

•I'm skeptical about these tax tools. How is this different from what TurboTax already shows? Does it actually give you information that TurboTax doesn't provide?

•Yes, it absolutely works with state taxes too! It breaks down federal and state withholding separately and shows you where the issues are happening. It's especially helpful for states with complicated tax rules. The main difference from TurboTax is that it's specifically designed to analyze withholding problems and explain them in plain English. TurboTax just shows your refund changing without really explaining why. Taxr.ai focuses on helping you understand what happened and how to prevent it next time by adjusting your W-4 correctly.

Just wanted to follow up about taxr.ai - I tried it yesterday and it was exactly what I needed! It showed me that my state withholding was totally off because my second job wasn't accounting for my primary income. The tool gave me a customized W-4 form that I can give to both employers to fix this for next year. Honestly wish I had known about this earlier, would have saved me a lot of confusion!

If you think your tax situation is frustrating, try getting help from the IRS! I spent WEEKS trying to get through to someone about a similar multiple-job issue. After 9 attempts and hours on hold, I tried Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) and was shocked when they actually got me connected to an IRS agent in under 20 minutes. They have this demo video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c that shows exactly how it works. The IRS agent confirmed everything people are saying here - multiple jobs cause withholding problems because each employer calculates withholding separately. The agent walked me through how to adjust my W-4 to account for multiple income sources and avoid the surprise next year.

•How does this even work? The IRS phone system is notoriously impossible to navigate. Are you saying this service somehow bypasses the regular phone tree?

•Yeah right. Nothing gets you through to the IRS faster. I've tried everything and still waited hours. This sounds like a scam that just takes your money and leaves you on hold anyway.

•It uses a combination of technology and timing to navigate the IRS phone system more efficiently. It doesn't bypass anything - it just handles the frustrating part of calling, waiting, navigating menus, and then calls you once it reaches a human. It's like having someone else wait on hold for you. It's definitely not a scam. I was super skeptical too, but it genuinely worked. The service monitors the call and when an actual IRS agent picks up, it connects you immediately. You don't pay if you don't get connected to an agent, so there's really no risk in trying it.

I need to eat my words about Claimyr. After my skeptical comment, I was still desperate to talk to someone at the IRS about my multiple W-2 issue, so I tried it. Got connected to an IRS rep in about 35 minutes which is INSANE compared to my previous attempts (gave up after 2+ hours multiple times). The agent confirmed exactly what everyone here said about withholding calculations with multiple jobs. She also helped me calculate exactly how much extra I should have withheld each paycheck to avoid this problem. Honestly, I'm still shocked it actually worked.

For future reference, whenever you start a second job mid-year, you should always adjust your W-4 withholding. There's a specific checkbox on the W-4 form for multiple jobs that helps account for this exact situation. Most people skip this section not realizing how important it is.

•Is it too late to do anything about it for this year's taxes? Or am I just stuck with the lower refund?

•For this year's taxes, you're unfortunately stuck with the current situation. The withholding already happened in 2024, and you can't retroactively change it. However, you can absolutely prevent this from happening again. Fill out a new W-4 for both jobs right away, making sure to check the multiple jobs box or complete the multiple jobs worksheet. This will ensure the proper amount is withheld going forward and you won't have another surprise next tax season.

Has anyone tried using a different tax software? Sometimes TurboTax can be confusing with how it displays refund changes. I switched to FreeTaxUSA last year and found it was much clearer about explaining why my refund amount changed when adding forms.

•FreeTaxUSA is way better at explaining these things. It has a detailed summary page that breaks down exactly how each form affects your overall tax situation. And it's way cheaper than TurboTax for basically the same service.
