Is My Non-Filed 2020 Tax Year (Marked with Asterisk) Causing 570 Code Delay on 2022 Refund?

I checked my IRS transcript availability and my 2022 return still shows a 570 code and isn't moving. I downloaded all my available transcripts and I'm seeing something strange that might be causing the delay. Looking at my transcript availability screen at 8:45 on 5G, I can see the following breakdown: Return Transcript: 2022: Available 2021: Available 2020*: Not available (has asterisk) 2019: Available Record of Account Transcript: 2022: Available 2021: Available 2020: N/A 2019: Available Account Transcript: 2022: Available 2021: Available 2020: Available 2019: Available Wage & Income Transcript: 2022: Available 2021: Available 2020: Available 2019: Available The IRS website clearly indicates that the asterisk (*) next to 2020 "Indicates the availability of a Verification of Non-Filing letter for the year." This confirms I didn't file for 2020, which is correct. Could this missing 2020 return be what's holding up my current 2022 refund? I can see my Return Transcript, Record of Account Transcript, Account Transcript, and Wage & Income Transcript are all available for 2022, but that 570 code just won't budge. I've checked the transcript availability through the IRS website (sa.www4.irs.gov) and selected "Other" when prompted for what transcript I wanted, which is when it showed me this complete list. I'm worried that my 2022 refund is being held up because of this 2020 non-filing situation, even though I didn't need to file that year. Has anyone experienced a similar situation with a 570 code and a previous year marked with an asterisk? Any advice on next steps would be appreciated.

The IRS transcript availability screen confirms your non-filing status for 2020, as shown by the asterisk (*) and the "N/A" listed under Record of Account Transcript for that year. While you have full transcript access for 2019, 2021, and 2022 - including Return, Account, and Wage & Income documents - the 2020 gap is significant. However, the current 570 code on your 2022 return isn't necessarily linked to the missing 2020 return. A 570 code specifically indicates an active account freeze for review purposes, which could be triggered by various factors beyond prior year filing status. Since you have a complete 2022 Return Transcript and Wage & Income Transcript available, the IRS has your current year information - they've just placed a hold on processing. To better understand the delay, you should examine your 2022 Account Transcript for any accompanying notice codes or transaction details that might explain the specific reason for the review hold.

So should I file 2020 first before expecting movement on 2022?

It wouldn't hurt, but its not guaranteed to fix your 2022 hold. The 570 usually needs to resolve on its own timeline

Hey everyone, I've been using taxr.ai to analyze my transcripts and it's been a game changer. For $1 it tells you exactly what's causing delays and when to expect movement. Much better than trying to piece everything together ourselves. https://taxr.ai

I had this exact situation last year! File that 2020 return ASAP. Mine updated about 3 weeks after I submitted the missing year.
