How much should I expect to pay someone to renew my ITIN? Getting quoted $200 - is that reasonable??
My ITIN is expiring soon and I need to get it renewed. I called around to a few places and one tax prep office told me they would charge $200 to handle the renewal process. This seems really steep to me, but I honestly have no idea what the going rate is for this service. I'm not super familiar with all the paperwork involved so maybe it's worth it? I'd rather not do it myself if it's complicated, but also don't want to get ripped off. Has anyone gone through this process recently? What did you pay? I'm in a mid-sized city if that makes any difference for pricing. Thanks for any advice!

$200 seems on the higher end but not completely unreasonable depending on what services they're including. The ITIN renewal itself doesn't have a fee from the IRS - it's free to submit Form W-7 for renewal. What you're paying for is the tax preparer's expertise and time. A Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA) who can verify your documents locally (so you don't have to mail originals to the IRS) typically charges between $50-150 for ITIN services. If they're also preparing any tax returns as part of this or offering additional consultation, that might explain the higher price. You could also consider doing it yourself - the form isn't terribly complicated if your situation is straightforward. Or check with local community tax clinics, as some offer free or reduced-cost ITIN services.

•Is there any risk in doing it yourself? Like if I mess something up will it cause problems with my taxes later? And do I have to send my original documents to the IRS if I do it myself?

•There's minimal risk in doing it yourself if you take time to read the instructions carefully. The main issue people run into is documentation - if you do it yourself without going through a Certifying Acceptance Agent, you typically need to send original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency. This is what makes many people uncomfortable. If you don't want to mail your original passport or other identity documents, that's where using a CAA becomes valuable since they can verify your documents in person and submit copies. The IRS is generally good about returning original documents, but it can take time and there's always some worry about documents getting lost in transit.

After spending hours on hold with the IRS trying to figure out my own ITIN renewal last year, I ended up using taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it saved me so much time. They have this document review service where you upload your W-7 form and ID documents, and they check everything before you submit. They pointed out that I had missed a critical checkbox and explained exactly what supporting documents I needed for my specific situation. I was nervous about making mistakes because my previous ITIN application had been rejected twice for documentation issues. Their system flagged potential problems I wouldn't have caught myself.

•Did they actually help you fill out the forms or just review them? I'm starting from scratch and don't even know where to get the forms.

•How long did the whole process take with them? I need my ITIN renewed pretty quickly since I'm expecting some payments that will need tax documentation.

•They have templates and guided form completion that helps you fill everything out correctly the first time. They walk you through each section of the W-7 form with explanations in plain English about what each part means. You can download the completed forms directly from their platform. The review process was quick - I had feedback within 24 hours. The actual ITIN processing time still depends on the IRS (took about 7 weeks for me), but at least I knew my application was correct when I sent it in. That peace of mind was definitely worth it since I'd already wasted months with rejected applications.

Just wanted to update - I ended up trying taxr.ai that someone mentioned above. For way less than the $200 quote I got, they guided me through the whole ITIN renewal process. Their document verification tool caught that I was using an expired passport (it had literally expired the month before) and saved me from having my application rejected. The step-by-step instructions were really clear, especially about which supporting documents I needed to include. I'm not particularly tech-savvy but their interface was easy to navigate. My ITIN renewal is now in process with the IRS and I'm feeling confident it will go through without issues this time!

If you're struggling to get answers from the IRS about your ITIN renewal (like I was), I strongly recommend Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). They got me connected to an actual IRS representative in about 15 minutes when I had been trying for DAYS on my own. You can see how it works in their demo video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I had a complicated situation where my ITIN was about to expire but I also needed to update my address and name after getting married. The IRS agent was able to confirm exactly what additional forms I needed to include with my ITIN renewal. Saved me from having to pay a tax preparer the $175 they wanted to charge me.

•Wait, so this service gets you through to the IRS faster? How does that even work? The IRS phone system is a nightmare!

•Sounds like a scam tbh. Nobody can magically get through the IRS phone tree. They probably just keep you on hold themselves and charge you for the privilege.

•It uses a callback system that continuously redials and navigates the IRS phone tree for you. When it reaches a live agent, it calls your phone and connects you directly. I was skeptical too until I tried it - I was literally connected to an IRS agent while making dinner! They don't charge you until you actually get connected to the IRS. I asked a bunch of questions about my ITIN renewal and specific documentation requirements for my name change situation. The agent walked me through everything, even emailed me the exact form variations I needed. Completely legitimate service that saved me hours of frustration.

Ok I need to eat my words. I tried Claimyr after posting that skeptical comment, and I'm shocked it actually worked. Was connected to an IRS rep in about 20 minutes after trying for literal WEEKS on my own. The IRS person told me I didn't even need to pay anyone for ITIN renewal - I qualified for free help through their Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program since my income is below their threshold. They even helped me locate the nearest VITA center that has a Certifying Acceptance Agent who could verify my documents without me having to mail in my original passport. Saved me that entire $200 quote I got from the tax prep place. Sometimes you actually do get what you pay for!

Little late to the party, but just FYI - I used H&R Block for my ITIN renewal last year and they charged me $149. That included verifying my documents as a Certifying Acceptance Agent and filing the renewal. I think prices vary depending on your location and which company you use.

•Thanks! I'll check with H&R Block too before making a decision. Was the process pretty smooth? Did they handle everything or did you still have to gather a bunch of documents?

•The process was straightforward - I brought my expired ITIN letter, passport, and proof of address. They took care of all the paperwork and verification. I didn't have to mail anything myself. You do need to bring all your original identity documents for them to verify, but they make copies there so you take your originals back home with you right away. The biggest time saver was not having to figure out which forms to fill out or worry about making mistakes. My new ITIN came in about 6 weeks.

Careful about timing! I just went through this and didn't realize that ITIN renewals are processed faster during non-peak tax season (May-December). If you submit during tax filing season it can take 11 weeks or longer.

•That's a great point. I renewed mine last July and had my new ITIN in about 5 weeks. My cousin did hers in February and it took over 3 months!

Just wanted to add my experience - I ended up going with a local CPA who charged $125 for ITIN renewal as a Certifying Acceptance Agent. The price included document verification and submitting everything to the IRS. What really helped me was calling around to multiple places first. I got quotes ranging from $75 (at a community tax center) to $250 (at a fancy downtown firm). The $200 quote you got isn't outrageous, but you can definitely find it cheaper if you shop around. One thing to ask when getting quotes: make sure they're actually a CAA (Certifying Acceptance Agent) so you don't have to mail your original documents. Some places will charge you the same amount but still make you mail everything yourself, which defeats the purpose of paying someone!

•This is really helpful advice! I didn't even know to ask about CAA certification when getting quotes. That explains why some places were so much cheaper - they probably weren't offering the document verification service. I'm definitely going to call around more before deciding. The convenience of not having to mail my passport is probably worth paying a bit more, but I want to make sure I'm getting a fair price for that service. Thanks for sharing the price range you found - gives me a good benchmark for what to expect!

I went through ITIN renewal last year and ended up doing it myself after getting similar quotes around $150-200. The Form W-7 really isn't that complicated if you read through the instructions carefully - it's mostly basic personal information and checking boxes for why you need the ITIN. The biggest decision is whether you want to mail your original documents to the IRS (free but risky) or pay a Certifying Acceptance Agent to verify them in person. I ended up getting certified copies of my documents from the issuing agencies instead, which cost me about $25 total but gave me peace of mind. If you do decide to pay someone, definitely shop around and make sure they're a legitimate CAA. You can actually search for authorized agents on the IRS website. Also ask exactly what's included - some places charge extra fees on top of their base rate that they don't mention upfront.
