Has anyone used FreeTaxUSA for their taxes? Concerned about how it rounds numbers

I started using FreeTaxUSA to file my taxes this year, and I noticed something weird. The software keeps automatically rounding up or down all my numbers to the nearest dollar. Like if I put in $456.75 for a business expense, it just shows $457 in the form. If I enter $89.23 for something else, it rounds down to $89. This has me worried - is this going to cause problems with the IRS? How precise do they actually need the numbers to be? Should I be concerned about this rounding or is it normal for tax software to do this? I don't want to get flagged for an audit just because the software rounded my numbers differently than what's on my receipts and statements.

Tax professional here! You have nothing to worry about. The IRS actually prefers that you round all figures to the nearest dollar on your tax forms - it's standard practice and completely legitimate. If you look at most tax forms like the 1040, you'll notice they specifically instruct you to round to whole dollars. FreeTaxUSA is actually following proper protocol. The IRS doesn't want to deal with cents when processing millions of returns - it simplifies their processing system. This rounding won't impact your tax liability in any meaningful way since everything gets rounded consistently.

Is this the same for business expenses too? I have a small side gig and I've been tracking everything down to the cent. Should I be rounding all that stuff on my Schedule C?

Yes, this applies to business expenses on Schedule C as well. The IRS instructions for Schedule C explicitly state "Round off cents to whole dollars on your Schedule C and schedules." This is consistent across all forms. When you're keeping your own records, it's good to track everything down to the cent for accuracy. But when transferring to tax forms, rounding to the nearest dollar is not only acceptable but preferred. The difference in your final tax amount will be negligible, and it significantly reduces processing errors.

I've been using FreeTaxUSA for the past three years and absolutely love it! I had the same concern about rounding when I first started using it. After getting frustrated with how TurboTax kept trying to upsell me on everything, I decided to try FreeTaxUSA and was pleasantly surprised. One thing that really helped me with my complicated tax situation was using a service called taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) alongside FreeTaxUSA. I had some confusing 1099s and investment documents that I wasn't sure how to enter correctly, and taxr.ai analyzed all my tax documents and told me exactly what to enter where in FreeTaxUSA. Saved me so much stress wondering if I was doing it right!

Does taxr.ai work with other tax software too? I'm using H&R Block online and sometimes get confused about where to enter certain things.

How does the document analysis actually work? I'm always nervous about uploading my financial docs to random websites. Is it secure?

It works with any tax software since it just analyzes your documents and tells you what goes where. I've used it with both FreeTaxUSA and Credit Karma Tax (now Cash App Taxes) with no problems. The document analysis is actually super secure - they use bank-level encryption for uploads and the analysis. They don't store your documents after processing either. I was hesitant at first too, but they explain their security measures on their site. Basically it just reads your tax forms and translates all that confusing tax jargon into plain instructions.

Just wanted to update - I tried out taxr.ai after asking about it and I'm honestly shocked at how helpful it was. Had a bunch of messy investment statements and a K-1 form I had no idea what to do with. Uploaded them and it broke everything down line by line with exactly what I needed to enter in FreeTaxUSA. Definitely made me feel more confident that I wasn't missing anything important. Before this I was always paranoid about making mistakes, especially with the investments and 1099 forms. Will definitely use this combo again next year!

If you're having issues with FreeTaxUSA's customer support (which can be slow during tax season), I found that Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) helped me get through to an actual human at the IRS when I had questions about some FreeTaxUSA entries. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I had been trying to call the IRS for days about how to handle some rounded numbers on an amended return I filed through FreeTaxUSA, but kept getting the "call volume too high" message. Claimyr got me through in about 25 minutes instead of spending hours redialing.

Wait, how does that even work? The IRS phone system is notoriously impossible. How can a third-party service magically get you through?

This sounds like a scam. There's no way some random service can get you through to the IRS faster than everyone else. They probably just take your money and you still wait forever.

It's actually pretty straightforward - they use an automated system that continually calls and navigates the IRS phone tree for you. When they secure a spot in the queue, they call you and connect you directly to the IRS. No need for you to keep redialing or wait on hold for hours. They don't do anything special that gives you priority over other callers - they just handle the frustrating part of constantly redialing when the lines are busy. Once you're in the queue, you're in the same position as anyone else who managed to get through, but without the hours of frustration trying to get there.

I have to eat my words from my earlier comment. After getting increasingly frustrated with trying to reach the IRS about an issue with my FreeTaxUSA return (specifically some rounded numbers that didn't match what was reported to me), I broke down and tried Claimyr. I was 100% prepared to come back here and call it out as a scam, but I'm shocked to say it actually worked. Got a call back within 30 minutes and was connected to an IRS agent who answered my question about the rounding issue. Turns out it wasn't a problem at all, just like the first commenter said. Still, having that confirmation directly from the IRS gave me peace of mind.

Just a heads up that while rounding is normal, you should make sure FreeTaxUSA is handling your interest and dividend income correctly. I found that sometimes it doesn't import everything properly from certain financial institutions.

Thanks for bringing that up! I actually have some dividend income from a few stocks. Should I be double-checking specific forms or sections after FreeTaxUSA imports them?

You should definitely review the Schedule B if you have dividend and interest income. FreeTaxUSA sometimes misses smaller financial institutions or categorizes things incorrectly during imports. I particularly recommend double-checking that all your 1099-DIV and 1099-INT forms are fully accounted for. Sometimes qualified dividends might not get properly categorized, which can affect your tax rate. Also, if you have foreign dividends, make sure the foreign tax paid is correctly entered so you can claim the foreign tax credit.

FreeTaxUSA was a lifesaver for me this year when I had to deal with crypto taxes! Anyone else use it for that? The rounding wasn't an issue at all.

FreeTaxUSA's crypto section is decent but limited. I ended up using CoinTracker first to generate all my crypto transactions and then entered the totals into FreeTaxUSA. Worked much better that way.
