Got PATH Act Message But Only Claiming Child Tax Credit?

Just checked my refund status and it's like hitting a roadblock on what should be a clear highway. We only claimed Child Tax Credit for our first year filing jointly, but somehow got the PATH Act delay message. It's like being told to wait at a red light when you're in the green lane. Anyone else experiencing this? Our return is as straightforward as a ruler - just standard deductions plus CTC for our daughter.

Yes, this happens. CTC is covered by PATH Act. Many people don't realize this. The PATH Act affects most credits. Not just EITC. CTC definitely falls under it. Expect a delay. Processing should resume mid-February. Refunds with these credits typically start arriving late February or early March.

Do you know if this affects partial Child Tax Credit claims too? I'm only eligible for about half of the full amount this year.

I had this same situation last year. Filed in January with just the CTC, and got that PATH message which threw me for a loop. Ended up waiting until February 27th to get my refund, even though my sister who filed the same day (but with no credits) got hers in 10 days. The system doesn't distinguish between different types of refundable credits when applying the PATH Act hold.

So if I understand correctly: 1. File return with CTC 2. Get PATH Act message 3. Wait until mid-February for processing to begin 4. Expect refund approximately 2-3 weeks after that Is there any way to track progress during this waiting period, or is it just completely silent until it suddenly updates?

The PATH Act specifically delays refunds until February 15th for returns claiming EITC and ACTC (Additional Child Tax Credit). If you claimed exactly $2,000 per qualifying child, that's the standard CTC which isn't subject to PATH. If you claimed more than $2,000 per child (up to $1,600 additional per child for tax year 2023), that additional amount is the ACTC which triggers PATH Act verification. 87% of CTC claims include some portion of ACTC.

Same boat here! Got the PATH msg last week even tho we only have CTC. Tried checking WMR daily but no movement. Finally used https://taxr.ai to analyze my transcript & it explained exactly why - turns out the refundable portion of CTC (ACTC) triggers PATH Act verification just like EITC. The tool showed which cycle date I'm likely on & predicted DD date around Mar 6. Way more helpful than the generic IRS msg.

How does this tool actually work? I'm hesitant to use something that interprets my tax transcript when the IRS website already shows it. Does it really tell you anything you can't figure out yourself with a little research?

I was penny-pinching and almost didn't try it, but honestly it saved me so much anxiety last year! 😅 My transcript had like 15 different codes that looked like gibberish, and the tool explained each one in plain English. It correctly predicted my deposit date within 1 day. Totally worth it for the peace of mind alone.

I wonder if there's perhaps some other flag on your return that might be triggering the PATH message? It seems unlikely that a straightforward CTC claim would cause such a delay, unless maybe there's something about the refundable portion that most of us aren't aware of.

According to the IRS website (https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/path-act-tax-related-provisions), the PATH Act specifically includes the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) which is the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit. I'm in the same situation - only claimed CTC but got hit with the PATH delay. It's frustrating but understandable when you realize it's the refundable part that triggers it, not just EITC as many people think.

Like trying to separate flour from a cake after it's baked, isn't it? Is there any way to file in a manner that avoids triggering the PATH Act review, or is it just inevitable if you're claiming any portion of refundable credits?

I checked my return from February 3rd and confirmed that I claimed $2,000 per child plus an additional $1,600 per child as the refundable portion. This matches exactly with what triggers the PATH Act verification process. The verification window began on January 29th this year and continues through February 15th according to the IRS processing calendar.

I had the same problem. Called the IRS for 3 days straight. No luck. Then used Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). Got through in 20 minutes. Agent confirmed CTC with refundable portion triggers PATH review. Nothing wrong with my return. Just have to wait. Said refund should come first week of March. Saved me days of stress.

Warning from personal experience: • Got PATH message last year with only CTC • Assumed it would resolve automatically • Waited 8 weeks with no movement • Finally called IRS • Discovered they needed verification of my daughter's residency • Had to mail in documents • Delayed refund by 3 more months Don't assume PATH delay is normal processing! Sometimes there's an actual issue they need you to resolve.

This happened to me too! I ignored the PATH message thinking it was just standard processing. Four months later I was still waiting, and when I finally got through to someone, they said they'd sent a letter requesting verification that I never received. Had to start the whole process over again.

I almost had this happen, but I checked my transcript and saw code 570 which meant they needed more info. Called right away and got it resolved in two weeks instead of waiting months. Always check your transcript for hold codes!

Oh my god I'm so frustrated with this whole PATH thing! I filed on January 24th with just the Child Tax Credit and STILL waiting. Called the IRS yesterday and the agent explained that the Additional Child Tax Credit (the refundable portion over $2,000) is what triggers PATH Act protection, not just EITC! Why don't they make this clearer?? She said my return looks fine but they can't release it until after Feb 15th because of this stupid law.

Same experience here. The IRS representative I spoke with mentioned they're actually required by law to hold these refunds, even when there are no red flags. It's an automatic system delay, not a manual review in most cases.

I've been through this rodeo before. My trick is to file early but mentally prepare for a late February deposit. Then if it comes earlier, it's a pleasant surprise instead of an anxiety-inducing wait.

Wasn't this supposed to be fixed? I remember reading that the IRS was going to streamline the process this year, but here we are again with the same delays. Anyway, I was in your exact situation last year - claiming only CTC for our twins. Got the PATH message, freaked out, then finally got my refund on February 28th. Could they make this system any more confusing? At least now I know to expect the delay and budget accordingly.

The PATH Act wasn't actually changed - what you might be thinking of is the IRS's improved processing systems that were supposed to speed up returns in general. The legal requirement to hold refunds with certain credits until February 15th is still in effect.

I've seen this happen every year since 2017. Back then, I worked for a tax preparation company. The PATH Act specifically includes the Additional Child Tax Credit which is the refundable portion of the CTC. If your credit exceeds your tax liability, making part of it refundable, that triggers PATH Act verification. Last year, most of my clients with ACTC saw refunds between February 27th and March 3rd, despite filing in late January.

This community wisdom has saved me so much stress: The PATH Act delays refunds for ANY refundable credits, not just EITC. The Child Tax Credit has two parts - regular CTC (up to $2,000 per child) and Additional CTC (the refundable portion). It's that second part that triggers the PATH delay. The IRS won't even begin processing these returns until February 15th, by law. Don't waste time checking WMR constantly before then - nothing will change!
