Got 5071c letter from IRS - Help with identity verification?

Hey everyone, I just got a 5071c letter from the IRS about identity verification. I'm having trouble verifying my identity online. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any tips on how to handle it or what to expect when I call them?

Ugh, I got one of those too. Such a pain! I ended up having to call them because the online system kept glitching out on me. Be prepared to wait on hold for like an eternity tho 🙄

How long did you end up waiting? I've been putting off calling cuz I don't have hours to waste on hold 😩

It was brutal, like 2.5 hours! I just put it on speaker and did other stuff. But yeah, clear your schedule lol

Pro tip: call right when they open. I only waited about 30 mins that way!

I found a way to skip the hold time! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/wkiD-dusWE0

Sounds too good to be true. How does it actually work?

It's legit! You just put in your phone # and they call you when an agent is on the line. Saved me hours of hold time.

I get the skepticism, but it's just a tool to save time. You're still talking directly to the IRS, this just handles the hold for you.

Here's what you need to know about the 5071c letter and identity verification process: • It's a legit letter from the IRS, not a scam • You have two options: verify online or by phone • For online, use the Identity Verification Service at irs.gov • If calling, use the number on your letter (NOT general IRS #) • Have your prior year tax return, current year tax return, and the 5071c letter ready • They'll ask questions only you would know to verify your identity • Common reasons for this: suspicious activity, potential identity theft, or random selection Don't ignore it! Your refund (if you're owed one) won't be processed until you verify. Good luck!

Quick question - do you know how long it typically takes for them to process everything after you verify?

It can vary, but usually 2-6 weeks. If you don't hear anything after 6 weeks, definitely follow up!

PSA: If you're calling, make sure you're calling the right number! There are scammers out there posing as the IRS. Only use the number on your 5071c letter!
