Getting charged for filing 1099-NEC on supposedly free tax service
I started using H&R Block this year and honestly it was going so much smoother than TurboTax which I've been stuck with for like the last 3-4 years. Everything was fine until I got to entering my wife's Uber Eats income. Out of nowhere it asked which paid package I wanted to purchase even though I specifically selected the free filing option at the beginning! Is this normal for all tax filing services when you have a 1099-NEC? Are they all gonna make me upgrade from the free version just because it's not a "simple return" anymore? Or is this just an H&R Block thing? Really annoyed because I thought I was finally gonna file for free this year.

This is unfortunately common with most of the "free" tax filing services. They advertise free filing, but once you have anything slightly more complex than a basic W-2, they usually require an upgrade. The 1099-NEC (for independent contractors) typically triggers the requirement for Schedule C, which means self-employment tax calculations. Most free versions don't include this - they're really only free for the simplest returns. You might want to check out the IRS Free File program partners (through the official IRS website) as some of them offer truly free filing for higher incomes or more complex situations. Credit Karma Tax (now Cash App Taxes) and FreeTaxUSA also tend to handle 1099-NEC/self-employment without charging, though features may be more limited.

•Does the IRS Free File still have income limits? I thought I made too much last year to qualify (around $78k)? Also, do these other services you mentioned handle multiple state filings without charging extra?

•Yes, the IRS Free File program does have income limits - currently it's $73,000 for 2023 tax returns (filing in 2024). If you're at $78k, you might be just above that threshold. Cash App Taxes (formerly Credit Karma Tax) offers completely free federal and state filing with no income limitations, and they handle 1099-NEC/self-employment income. They support one state filing for free, but if you need multiple states, FreeTaxUSA might be better - they offer free federal filing including self-employment and charge about $15 per state.

After getting frustrated with the same bait-and-switch tactics from the big tax companies, I tried taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) and it was a completely different experience. They actually handled my wife's 1099-NEC gig work without any surprise charges. The interface is super straightforward - you just upload your tax documents and they extract all the information automatically. What I liked most is that it clearly showed which forms would be included before I even started, including Schedule C for my wife's Uber Eats income. No surprises halfway through like what happened to you.

•How accurate is their document scanning? I have terrible handwriting on some of my records and previous software has messed up the numbers badly.

•I'm intrigued but skeptical. Does it actually handle more complex situations? Like if I have rental income plus a small business plus W2 employment? Most "free" services fail as soon as you have multiple income streams.

•Their document scanning is surprisingly good - much better than what I've experienced with other tax software. It even handled my wife's messy expense receipts with decent accuracy, though I still double-checked everything. The AI seems to be trained specifically for tax documents. For complex situations with multiple income streams, that's actually where I found it most helpful. I have a W-2 job plus some freelance work, and my wife does Uber Eats. The system organized everything by income type and walked us through each section without getting confused. I believe rental income is definitely covered too - there was a specific section for it that I noticed but didn't need to use.

I wanted to follow up about taxr.ai that I was skeptical about in my earlier comment. I actually went ahead and tried it for my complicated return (W2 job + consulting business + rental property) and I'm genuinely surprised. Not only did it handle everything without upselling me, but it caught a deduction for my business that I missed last year. The document scanning worked perfectly for all my 1099-NECs and even organized my business expenses by category automatically. Definitely using this next year too!

If you're having trouble with your tax situation, especially with gig work income and 1099-NEC forms, you might want to call the IRS directly for guidance. The problem is actually GETTING THROUGH to someone who can help. After spending hours on hold last year with my 1099 questions, I discovered Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) which was a game changer. They basically wait on hold with the IRS for you, then call you once an agent is on the line. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c The IRS agent I spoke with gave me specific guidance about which forms I needed for my wife's gig work and confirmed I didn't need to pay for premium tax software just to file a 1099-NEC.

•Wait, how does this actually work? Do you have to give them personal information? Sounds kinda weird to have a third party connecting you to the IRS.

•This sounds like BS honestly. Why would I pay someone else to wait on hold when I can just do it myself? And the IRS agents usually don't even give good advice. Last time I called they gave me completely wrong information about my self-employment taxes.

•They don't need any sensitive personal information - just your phone number to call you back when an IRS agent is on the line. You enter what department you're trying to reach and they handle the waiting. When they connect you, it's a direct line to the IRS agent, just like if you'd waited on hold yourself. I was skeptical too but it's simply a hold service. You don't discuss your tax details with Claimyr at all - only with the actual IRS agent once you're connected. For me, it saved about 2 hours of hold time when I was trying to sort out exactly what forms I needed for my wife's 1099-NEC income.

I need to admit I was totally wrong about Claimyr in my skeptical comment. After spending THREE HOURS on hold with the IRS yesterday trying to get help with my 1099-NEC situation, I gave up and decided to try the service. Within 45 minutes I got a call back and was connected to an actual IRS representative! The agent confirmed that I don't need to pay extra to file with 1099-NEC income and directed me to the specific free file options that handle self-employment. Just saved me $89 that TurboTax was trying to charge. Sometimes being wrong feels pretty good.

Have you tried FreeTaxUSA? They charge nothing for federal filing including 1099-NEC and Schedule C. The only thing they charge for is state filing (around $15). I've used them for years with my freelance income and never had a surprise upgrade fee.

•I haven't tried FreeTaxUSA yet! Does it have a good interface? My biggest frustration with some of the smaller tax services is that the UI feels like it was designed in 1997 lol.

•The interface isn't as fancy as TurboTax or H&R Block, but it's definitely not from the 90s! It's clean and straightforward, just without all the animations and excessive hand-holding. Everything is organized logically and I actually find it faster to use than the big name services. They're especially good with 1099-NEC and other self-employment forms since you don't get routed into "upgrade now!" pages halfway through. Their help content is also surprisingly detailed if you get stuck on something.

The "free" tax filing services are never actually free if you have anything beyond basic W-2 income. I got hit with the same thing when filing my doordash gig work. Started with free filing and ended up paying $89!!! 🤬

•I found a workaround last year! If you go through the IRS Free File portal instead of directly to the tax service website, some of them are required to give you the free version even with 1099-NEC forms. There's an income limit though.
