Experience with H&R Block's Tax Pro Go - anyone tried the questionnaire/upload service?
So H&R Block has this new thing they're calling Tax Pro Go this year that I'm curious about. Basically how it works is you fill out a questionnaire about your tax situation, they give you a price right then, and then you just upload all your tax documents. Then a tax professional prepares everything for you behind the scenes. I saw on their website they call it "Tax Pro Match & Upfront Pricing" where you "Answer a few questions about yourself, get matched with the best Tax Pro for your needs based on your answers, and see your actual price upfront." I've been doing my own taxes with TurboTax for years but this year is complicated with a side business and a home purchase. Has anyone tried this H&R Block Tax Pro Go service? Wondering if it's actually good or just another way for them to upsell you on stuff once you're in the door. Any experiences would be super helpful!

I've been a tax professional for over 7 years and have some insights on these types of services. H&R Block's Tax Pro Go can be helpful if you're dealing with more complex situations like your side business and home purchase. The benefit is you're getting a real person handling your taxes, not just software prompts. That said, there are a few things to consider. Make sure all your documents are organized before uploading - the more organized you are, the better your results will be. Also, be thorough in the questionnaire since that's how they match you with a specialized preparer. If you minimize your business income or don't mention certain deductions, you might get matched with someone who isn't best suited for your situation.

•Do you think their "upfront pricing" is actually accurate? Or do they tend to find reasons to increase the price once they see your documents? Also wondering if their pros are actually experienced with small business deductions or mostly trained for basic W-2 stuff?

•Their upfront pricing is generally accurate as long as you're honest in the questionnaire. If you indicate you have a simple return but then upload small business documents, then yes, the price will increase. The algorithm matches complexity with pricing. The tax pros at H&R Block do have varying levels of experience and specialization. Some focus primarily on W-2 employees while others specialize in small businesses or investment properties. The questionnaire helps match you with someone who has experience in your specific tax situation. That's why being thorough about mentioning your side business and home purchase is crucial - it ensures you get someone with relevant expertise.

After struggling with some complicated tax stuff last year (rental property + freelance income), I found this amazing AI-powered tax document analyzer at https://taxr.ai that saved me tons of time. It basically looks at all your tax documents and explains everything in plain English - tells you what forms you need, what deductions you might miss, etc. Before trying H&R Block's service where you're paying someone else to figure it out, you might want to check this out. It basically gave me the confidence to do my own taxes even with complicated stuff. The coolest part was it pointed out some business deductions I would have totally missed that saved me like $1,870.

•Does it actually prepare your taxes or just analyze your documents? I'm confused about how this is different from TurboTax or other tax software.

•I'm a bit skeptical. How accurate is this AI thing compared to an actual tax professional? Especially for business deductions which can be pretty nuanced. Did you have any issues with the IRS after using it?

•It doesn't prepare your taxes like TurboTax - it analyzes your documents before you start preparing. Think of it like having a tax pro look over your forms and tell you what you're working with, what to watch for, and what you might miss. Then you can use that info in whatever tax software you prefer. The AI has been trained on thousands of tax documents and IRS guidelines, so it's pretty accurate for identifying deductions and credits. I was skeptical too, but I double-checked everything with IRS publications and it was spot on. No issues with the IRS - actually got a bigger refund than the previous year when I paid a preparer. The business deduction recommendations were all legitimate expenses I had forgotten about during the year.

Following up about that taxr.ai service - I actually tried it after posting my skeptical comment! I uploaded my mess of documents (W-2s, 1099s from my side gigs, and investment stuff) and wow... it organized everything and pointed out that I was missing some education credits from a professional certification course I took. Honestly didn't expect much but it basically created a complete roadmap of my tax situation. Saved me from paying H&R Block $219 and I still ended up with a proper return. Just wanted to come back and say I was wrong to be skeptical!

If you're still considering H&R Block but worried about pricing or service, another option is to actually talk to the IRS directly. Sounds crazy, I know, but I've been using this service called Claimyr (https://claimyr.com) that actually gets you through to a human at the IRS in minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. You can check out how it works here: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c I had questions about some home office deductions for my business that H&R Block gave me conflicting answers on, so I decided to go straight to the source. Used Claimyr and got through to an IRS agent in about 7 minutes who gave me the exact guidelines. Totally worth it for peace of mind.

•How does this actually work? The IRS phone lines are notoriously jammed... are you saying this somehow puts you ahead in the queue? That seems impossible.

•Yeah right. Nobody gets through to the IRS. I literally called 23 times last year and never spoke to a human. This sounds like a scam that charges you and then just puts you in the same hold queue as everyone else.

•It uses a technology that navigates the IRS phone system automatically and waits on hold for you. When an agent finally picks up, it calls your phone and connects you. You don't skip the line - the service just waits in it for you so you don't have to listen to the hold music for hours. It's definitely not a scam. I was super skeptical too when I first heard about it. But what happens is they have a system that handles the waiting part, then when a real IRS agent comes on the line, it immediately calls your phone and connects you. I've used it three times now - shortest wait was 7 minutes, longest was around 45 minutes (which still beats the 2+ hours I spent last year trying to get through).

I gotta eat my words from my previous comment. After being completely skeptical about that Claimyr thing, I tried it out of desperation because I needed to resolve an issue with a missing tax form. IT ACTUALLY WORKED. Got a call back in 32 minutes with a real live IRS person on the line. Saved me from paying H&R Block to resolve the issue. The IRS agent helped me request the correct forms and gave me direct instructions on what to do next. Still can't believe it worked after all my failed attempts calling them directly.

Just FYI on the H&R Block Tax Pro Go service - I used it last year. The upfront pricing was accurate for me ($199), but I think that's because I was super detailed in the questionnaire. My tax pro was knowledgeable and found some deductions I would've missed. The only annoying part was that after I got my return, they kept sending me emails about audit protection services for an additional fee. Felt a bit pushy. Overall though, the actual tax preparation was good and saved me time.

•Was the process of uploading documents easy? And did they contact you with questions or just handle everything behind the scenes? Thanks for sharing your experience!

•The document upload process was pretty straightforward - they have a secure portal where you can drag and drop files or take pictures with your phone. They categorize everything for you. My tax pro did contact me twice with questions. Once about some business expenses that needed clarification and another time about my home office deduction. The communication was all through their messaging system in the portal. After I answered those questions, they completed everything within about 3 days. Then they sent a draft for me to review before filing. I appreciated that they didn't just make assumptions and actually took the time to verify things they were unsure about.

Has anyone compared H&R Block Tax Pro Go to the similar TurboTax Live Full Service? Trying to decide between them and the pricing seems similar.

•I've used both. TurboTax Live Full Service was slightly more expensive ($229 vs $199 for H&R Block) but I found their interface more user-friendly. The tax pros seemed about the same level of expertise at both places. Main difference was TurboTax had more available time slots for video reviews where you could actually see/talk to your preparer.
