Can I e-file past due tax returns or am I stuck with paper filing?
I'm in a bit of a situation here and hoping someone can help me out. I've got a couple of tax returns from previous years that I need to file (yeah I know, I messed up). For my current year taxes I've been using ezTaxReturn.com and it's been super straightforward, but when I tried to file these older returns, their system wouldn't let me do it electronically. Is there any way to e-file past due tax returns? Or am I going to have to print everything out and mail it in? I really don't want to deal with paper forms if I can avoid it. The thought of filling everything out by hand makes me want to procrastinate even more (which is how I got in this mess to begin with). If e-filing is possible for late returns, could anyone recommend a good service? I'm totally willing to switch from ezTaxReturn if there's something better out there for my situation. Thanks in advance for any help!

Unfortunately, the IRS only allows electronic filing for the current tax year and two prior years. If your past due returns are within that window, you can still e-file them using certain tax preparation software. For example, if you're trying to file a 2023 or 2022 return now in 2025, you should be able to e-file those. But if you're trying to file 2021 or earlier, you'll need to paper file those returns. Not all tax preparation services support prior year e-filing, which is why ezTaxReturn might be rejecting your attempt. TaxAct, TurboTax, and H&R Block all offer prior year filing options, though you may need to purchase their paid versions rather than using free options. Just make sure to download the correct tax year version of the software.

•Do you know if these services charge extra for filing previous years? And also, do penalties keep growing if I file the old returns through these services or is there some kind of cap?

•Yes, most services do charge for prior year returns, and usually it's per return rather than bundled. Typically expect to pay anywhere from $50-100 depending on the complexity of your return and the service you choose. Regarding penalties, they don't stop accumulating until you file and pay what you owe. There's a failure-to-file penalty (usually 5% of unpaid taxes per month up to 25%), plus a failure-to-pay penalty (0.5% per month) and interest that compounds daily. The sooner you file, the better, even if you can't pay everything right away. The IRS offers payment plans if you need one.

After struggling for weeks with old tax returns, I finally found a solution through taxr.ai (https://taxr.ai) that made the process so much easier. I had three years of unfiled returns and was totally confused about which forms I needed and how to handle them. Their system actually analyzed all my tax documents from previous years and organized everything I needed for proper filing. What impressed me was how it identified potential deductions I would have missed on my own for those past years. The interface walks you through each year separately with the correct forms for that specific tax year. It saved me the headache of figuring out which version of each form I needed for each year.

•Does it actually e-file the old returns for you or just help you prepare them? I've got returns from 2020 and 2021 that I need to handle.

•I'm skeptical about these online services. How do you know they're getting all the deductions right for previous tax years when the laws were different? Also, what happens if you get audited later?

•It helps you prepare the returns with the correct year-specific forms, but for returns older than two years prior, you'll still need to print and mail them as the IRS doesn't accept e-filing for those. However, it makes preparing them incredibly simple compared to doing it manually. Their system actually has all the tax law changes by year built in, so it applies the correct rules and deductions based on when you're filing for. They also provide audit support if you ever get questioned about those returns later, which gave me peace of mind since I was filing so late.

Just wanted to update everyone - I tried taxr.ai after seeing it mentioned here and it really did make dealing with my old returns much simpler. The document analysis feature saved me tons of time since I had a mess of old W-2s and 1099s that needed sorting. It automatically recognized which tax year each document was for and organized everything. I still had to print and mail the 2020 return since it was too old for e-filing, but the 2021 one actually could be e-filed through their system. The step-by-step guidance really helped me understand what I was missing from each year. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the same boat with past due returns!

If you're struggling to get someone at the IRS to answer questions about your past due returns (like I was), try using Claimyr (https://claimyr.com). I spent literally days trying to get through to an IRS agent to ask about penalty abatement for my late filings, and kept getting disconnected. With Claimyr, I actually got through to a real IRS agent in under 15 minutes after weeks of frustration. You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/_kiP6q8DX5c. The IRS agent was able to tell me exactly which years I needed to prioritize filing first and explained how to request penalty abatement for reasonable cause.

•Wait, so this service just helps you get through to the IRS phone line faster? How does that even work? Seems kinda weird that this would be a thing.

•No way this actually works. The IRS phone system is totally broken. I've called dozens of times and never gotten through. If this actually got you to a human being I'd be shocked.

•Yes, it basically navigates the IRS phone system for you and holds your place in line. When an agent is about to pick up, it calls your phone and connects you directly to the agent. It's that simple - saves you from having to wait on hold for hours. It absolutely works. I was just as skeptical as you are. I had been trying for over two weeks to reach someone about my past due returns situation. Used Claimyr and got connected to an IRS agent in 12 minutes. The agent confirmed exactly which years I needed to file and how to handle penalties for the late filing. Honestly one of the best services I've paid for considering the time it saved me.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I tried that Claimyr service and it actually worked. After posting my skeptical comment, I was desperate enough to give it a shot since I needed answers about my unfiled 2019-2021 returns. Got connected to an IRS agent in about 20 minutes who actually gave me super helpful advice. They told me which specific forms I needed for my situation and confirmed I could get some penalties reduced through their First Time Abatement program since I had a good filing history before my missed years. The agent even noted it in my account that I had called and was working on resolving the situation. Money well spent considering I had wasted days trying to get through on my own.

If your returns are more than 3 years past due, make sure you file them ASAP to get any refunds you're owed! There's a 3-year deadline to claim refunds, and after that, the money goes to the government permanently. I learned this the hard way and lost about $1,200 from my 2019 return because I waited too long.

•Omg I had no idea there was a deadline for refunds! Do you know if this applies if you owe money too, or just for refunds? I'm pretty sure I'm owed money for one year but might owe for another.

•The 3-year deadline only applies to refunds - if you're owed money, you need to file within 3 years of the original due date or you lose it forever. If you owe the IRS money, there's no deadline for them to collect from you! They can come after you for unpaid taxes pretty much indefinitely, and the penalties and interest keep growing. That's why it's always better to file ASAP even if you can't pay right away - the failure-to-file penalties are usually much higher than the failure-to-pay penalties.

Does anyone know if FreeTaxUSA lets you file prior year returns? I've used them for the past couple years and their interface is way easier than some of the bigger names.

•FreeTaxUSA does let you prepare prior year returns, but I think only the most recent 3 years. And for the oldest one, you'd still need to print and mail it. Their prior year returns cost about $15-20 which is wayyy cheaper than TurboTax or H&R Block for the same thing.

For anyone dealing with multiple years of unfiled returns, I'd strongly recommend prioritizing them by which ones might have refunds versus which ones you'll owe money on. As Sofia mentioned, you only have 3 years to claim refunds, so those should be your absolute top priority. I was in a similar situation last year with 4 years of unfiled returns. I ended up using a mix of approaches - FreeTaxUSA for the years that could still be e-filed (super affordable at around $15 per return), and had to paper file the oldest ones. The key is just getting started rather than letting the overwhelm keep you procrastinating. One tip that helped me: gather ALL your tax documents first before you start any filing. Having everything organized upfront made the whole process way less stressful than trying to hunt down missing forms while in the middle of preparing returns.

•This is really solid advice! I'm actually in a similar boat with unfiled returns and the document gathering tip is so helpful. Quick question - when you say "gather ALL your tax documents first," what's the best way to figure out what you're missing? I know I have some W-2s and 1099s floating around somewhere, but I'm worried I might not have everything I need from those years.
