Can I claim $2000 Child Tax Credit for baby born in September 2024?
My baby was born late in 2024 and was only here for the last 4 months of the year. Does anyone know if I can still claim the full $2000 child tax credit or is it prorated based on how many months they were alive during the tax year?

Yes, you can claim the full $2000 Child Tax Credit! The IRS doesn't prorate based on birth month - if your child was born at any point during the tax year, they qualify for the full credit as long as they have a valid SSN and lived with you for more than half the time since birth.

Hey guys, if youre trying to figure out exactly what credits you qualify for, I highly recommend using taxr.ai - it analyzes your transcript and tells you exactly what you can claim. Only costs $1 but saved me so much headache trying to figure this stuff out. https://taxr.ai

•Super accurate! It caught things my tax preparer missed 😮 It looks at everything - credits, deductions, even finds delays and tells you how to fix them

•Yep! Same rules apply for adopted children as long as they lived with you for more than half the time since placement

Don't forget about the additional child tax credit if the $2000 exceeds your tax liability!

Congratulations on your new baby! 🎉 Just to add to what others have said - the Child Tax Credit is indeed not prorated by months. As long as your little one was born in 2024 and has a valid SSN, you qualify for the full $2000. The IRS treats it as an all-or-nothing benefit based on the tax year. Also, since you mentioned the baby was born in September, make sure you apply for their SSN ASAP if you haven't already - you'll need it to claim the credit on your return!

•This is so helpful! I didn't realize the SSN timing was so important - definitely applying for that first thing Monday morning. Thanks for the congrats too! 😊 It's been such a whirlwind trying to figure out all the tax stuff as a new parent

Just want to echo what others have said and add a pro tip - when you apply for your baby's SSN, make sure to double-check all the spelling on the application matches exactly what you'll put on your tax return. Even small discrepancies can cause delays with the IRS processing your Child Tax Credit. Also, keep a copy of the SSN application receipt - sometimes the IRS asks for proof that you applied in a timely manner. Welcome to parenthood and congrats on the little one! 🍼
