Is calling EDD still impossible in 2025? My UI claim needs immediate attention
Has anyone successfully reached an EDD rep by phone recently? I filed my UI claim 3 weeks ago after being laid off from my warehouse job, and there's an issue with my account that I NEED to resolve ASAP. I've tried calling literally 37 times over the past week (counted them!) at different times between 8am-5pm, and either get the dreaded "we're experiencing high call volume" message or it disconnects me after 15 minutes on hold. This is getting desperate - my rent is due next week and I have $267 left in my account. Is the phone system still as broken as it was during COVID? Are there better hours to call? I tried the technical support line too but they said they can't help with my specific issue. Any advice would save my sanity right now!

Yes, unfortunately EDD's phone system is still a nightmare in 2025. I had the exact same problem last month with my claim showing a "pending eligibility interview" status. What worked for me was calling exactly at 8:01am (not 8:00 - the system isn't fully booted yet) and selecting the Spanish option, then asking for English when a rep answers. The Spanish line has shorter queues typically. Also try Wednesdays - for some reason they seem less busy.

•Thank you! I'll try the 8:01am Spanish line trick tomorrow morning. Did you have to do anything special once you actually got through to resolve your issue?

omg the calling situation is WORSE than during covid imo... i spent 3 entire days redailing last month before i got through. so frustrating!!!! when i finally reached someone they fixed my problem in like 5 mins, which made it even more annoying that it took so long to reach them!!!

I've been on both sides of this - as a claimant and briefly working at an EDD call center last year. The sad truth is they're severely understaffed and their phone system is beyond outdated. Three weeks is actually pretty standard for claim processing now, especially if there are any flags on your account (previous claims, gaps in work history, employer disputes, etc). If you need to speak to someone urgently, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was skeptical at first, but it actually worked for me when I had an identity verification issue that was holding up my benefits. They have a system that keeps dialing for you until it gets through, then connects you. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. I got through to an EDD rep within an hour instead of days of redialing.

The phone situation with EDD is indeed still challenging, but there are some effective strategies beyond just repeatedly calling: 1. Contact your state assembly member or senator's office. They have dedicated EDD liaisons who can often resolve issues quickly. Google "[your city] state assembly member" to find yours. 2. Use the UI Online messaging system - while not as immediate as calling, I've seen responses within 3-5 business days recently. 3. Be very specific about your issue when you do get through. Certain claim problems (identity verification, eligibility interviews, disqualifications) need to be transferred to specialized departments. 4. Make sure you're continuing to certify every two weeks even while your issue is pending resolution. Many people stop certifying while waiting for problems to be fixed, which creates additional delays. In the meantime, if your situation is dire financially, consider applying for emergency CalFresh benefits (food assistance) which can sometimes be processed within days.

•Thank you for these detailed suggestions! I've been certifying regularly, and I'll try contacting my assembly member tomorrow. Do you know if there's any way to see what specific issue is holding up my claim? The website just shows "pending" with no other details.

I had a similar problem and what I did was drive to the actual EDD office in person! I know it sounds old school but the one near me in Sacramento lets you make appointments online and I got all my issues resolved in one visit. The staff was actually really helpful face-to-face. Check if there's an office within driving distance for you? Worth the gas money to get it sorted!

•This doesn't work at all offices though. My local EDD office in San Diego doesn't handle UI claims in person anymore - they told me they only do career services and resume help now. They literally handed me a piece of paper with the same phone number I'd been trying for weeks. So frustrating!!

Another tip: when you do get through to someone, get their ID number or name and take detailed notes about what they tell you. I've had situations where one rep tells me something completely different from another, and having documentation of previous conversations helps tremendously, especially if you need to file an appeal later.

Update for anyone wondering - I FINALLY got through this morning! Used the 8:01am trick and called on the Spanish line (pressed 2, then asked for English when someone answered). Only waited about 20 minutes. Turns out my former employer contested my claim saying I quit (I didn't - was definitely laid off with 30 other people). Now I have to wait for an eligibility interview in two weeks, but at least I know what's happening now. The rep also expedited my interview since I explained my financial situation. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Excellent news! Make sure you gather any documentation that proves you were laid off (termination letter, emails, text messages with supervisors, etc.). Having these ready for your eligibility interview will speed things up significantly. Also, continue certifying every two weeks while waiting for the interview.
