EDD claim during 3-month temp job - should I certify weekly to keep claim active?
I just got offered a 3-month temp position starting next week at a marketing firm. The supervisor was pretty clear that there's very little chance of extension since they're just covering someone's maternity leave. I already have an active unemployment claim that I've been using for the past month. My question is: What's the best way to handle my EDD claim while I'm working this temp job? Should I keep certifying every two weeks and just report my income? Or do I need to completely close my claim and then re-open when the temp job ends? I'm worried about having to go through the whole application process again in 3 months and potentially waiting weeks for benefits to restart. Has anyone navigated this situation successfully?

Absolutely keep certifying! Just report all your earnings accurately each certification period. When you earn too much, EDD will automatically stop paying you benefits for those weeks, but your claim remains open. This is exactly what you want - when your temp job ends, you can continue certifying without having to reapply (as long as your benefit year hasn't ended). Basically, there are three scenarios during certification: 1. If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount, you'll get partial benefits 2. If you earn more than your weekly benefit amount, you'll get $0 that week, but your claim stays open 3. If you stop certifying completely, your claim goes inactive and you might need to reopen it Option 2 is what you want during your temp job. Just make sure you report your hours and wages accurately each time!

•Thank you, this is exactly what I needed to know! So even if I'm getting $0 for several weeks in a row, the claim stays active as long as I keep certifying? I was worried they'd automatically close it if I reported full-time wages for too many consecutive weeks.

congrads on the job! i was in the same boat last year. keep certifying and just tel them what u earned. when the job ends u just keep certifying like normal and theyll start paying u again. way easier than doing a new claim!!

•That's reassuring to hear it worked smoothly for you! Did you have any issues when you went back to collecting after your temp job ended?

DO NOT STOP CERTIFYING!!!! I made this mistake and it was a NIGHTMARE trying to get benefits restarted. The system is designed for people to work temporary jobs and then go back on UI. Just report your income honestly and keep certifying every two weeks even when you're making too much to get any benefits. The EDD system is deliberately set up this way for seasonal and temporary workers. They EXPECT people to work for periods during their benefit year.

Keep certifying! But make sure you understand how to report your wages correctly. EDD wants your gross wages (before taxes) for the weeks you WORKED, not when you got paid. So if you work the last few days of one certification period and get paid for it in the next period, you still report those wages in the period you actually did the work. Also, make sure when answering the question about looking for work, you understand that while working this temp job, you aren't required to look for other work. You can truthfully answer "yes" to the work search question based on your current employment. Just another tip - keep a detailed log of your hours and earnings each week to make certification easier and more accurate. I've been through this exact situation twice with seasonal work.

Everyone here has the right idea - definitely keep certifying! Make sure you report your gross wages (before taxes) during the weeks you perform the work, not when you get paid. One thing to watch for: If your benefit year expires during your temp job, you would need to file a new claim after the job ends. Your benefit year is 12 months from when you first applied. If your temp job ends after this 12-month period, you'll need to file a new claim rather than just continuing with the old one. But as long as your temp job ends within your current benefit year, you can just keep certifying and reporting wages, and then you'll start receiving benefits again automatically when the job ends (assuming you still have a balance on your claim).

•Thank you for mentioning the benefit year - I hadn't thought about that! My initial claim was filed about 2 months ago, so I should be fine with the 3-month temp job. The benefits will automatically restart when I report no earnings after the job ends?

Yes, your benefits will automatically restart when you report no earnings (or earnings below your weekly benefit amount). The system is designed for this exact scenario. The only thing that would prevent your benefits from restarting would be if your benefit year ended or if you ran out of your total claim balance.

Has anyone tried calling EDD to ask about this? I had almost the exact same situation last month and wanted to confirm directly with them but couldn't get through on the phone for three days straight. Ended up just continuing to certify and hoping for the best. It all worked out but would have saved me a lot of anxiety if I could have just talked to someone!

•I've had good luck using Claimyr to get through to EDD when I had questions about my certification during temporary work. They got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km that shows how it works. The rep confirmed exactly what everyone here is saying - keep certifying and report your earnings, and benefits automatically restart when the temp job ends. Having that official confirmation really eased my mind.

Yes, they were really helpful. The EDD rep walked me through exactly what would happen with my claim during and after my temporary job. They also explained that even if you get $0 for several certification periods in a row, the claim stays active as long as you keep certifying. The important thing is consistency with your certifications.

•If you miss one certification period, you can usually still certify late for those weeks through your UI Online account. There's a "Certify for Previous Weeks" option. However, if you miss multiple certification periods in a row, your claim might go inactive, and you'd need to reopen it (which is simpler than filing a new claim but still an extra step). EDD generally gives you about 14 days after your certification date to complete it before it becomes "late". So try not to miss the deadlines, but if you do, certify as soon as you remember!

Thank you all for the helpful advice! I feel much better about the situation now. I'll definitely keep certifying throughout my temp assignment and report my earnings accurately. It's a relief to know the process is set up to handle temporary work situations like mine. I've set calendar reminders for all my certification dates for the next 4 months so I don't forget. Sounds like the key points are: - Keep certifying every two weeks even with full-time work - Report gross wages for when I worked (not when paid) - Benefits will automatically restart when I report no earnings after job ends - My claim should stay active as long as I consistently certify I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences!
