Disqualified then received EDDCAN number - confused about my EDD claim status

I'm completely confused about my EDD claim status and hoping someone can help make sense of this. Last week I had my eligibility interview because EDD flagged my claim for listing my full-time position at Davis Marketing as my last employer instead of my gig work with DoorDash. After being laid off from Davis, I started doing DoorDash deliveries to make ends meet while job hunting. On Friday, I received a disqualification notice stating I was terminated for 'time clock manipulation' - which is absolutely untrue! My former employer told me the layoff was due to departmental restructuring, but apparently told EDD something completely different. I never had access to modify time records in our payroll system - only HR administrators could do that. Here's where it gets confusing: today I received ANOTHER letter from EDD that shows my claim being processed with DoorDash listed as my last employer. It included an EDDCAN number. When I logged into UI Online, there was a message about tax withholding options for when I certify. Does this mean my claim is actually being processed despite the disqualification letter? Are these two separate claims somehow? I'm so confused and really need this unemployment while I'm looking for a new full-time position. Any insights would be appreciated!

This sounds like EDD might be processing two separate claims for you - one related to your Davis Marketing position (which was disqualified) and another considering your DoorDash work. The EDDCAN number and tax withholding message are good signs that at least one claim is still active in their system. I recommend calling EDD to clarify your situation. Ask specifically about the status of your claim with DoorDash as the last employer, and mention both the disqualification notice and the new EDDCAN letter. You'll want them to explain exactly which claim is active and what periods you can certify for. Regarding the disqualification for the Davis Marketing position, you should consider appealing if their reason was inaccurate. You have 30 days from the notice date to file an appeal.

Thank you for this explanation! I didn't realize they could be processing two separate claims. I've been trying to call EDD for 3 days but can't get through. Just constant busy signals or the dreaded "we're experiencing high call volume" message before it hangs up. Do you think I should just go ahead and certify when the weeks become available, or wait until I can talk to someone?

DEFINETLY appeal that disqualification! The same thing happened to me last yr. My employer said I was terminated for "excessive tardiness" when they told me it was a position elimination. I appealed and WON because they couldn't provide any documentation of warnings or write-ups. The judge at the hearing basically called them out for trying to avoid their UI tax increase. Meanwhile, yes go ahead and certify for any weeks that become available. If your eligible through the DoorDash work, you'll get paid. If not, you won't lose anything by certifying. Just be 100% honest on those certifications.

That's encouraging to hear you won your appeal! I'm definitely going to appeal because I was never disciplined for any time issues - literally got called into a meeting and told they were cutting 15% of staff. How long did your appeal process take from filing to decision?

Have u certified for any weeks yet or is this a brand new claim? The way EDD works is super confusing but what might have happened is they initially disqualified u based on Davis Marketing info, then reconsidered with DoorDash. The EDDCAN number is def a good sign!!!! That's ur Customer Account Number that's assigned to active claims.

YES THIS! The EDDCAN number means you have an ACTIVE claim in the system. I went through something similar and was freaking out until I realized EDD was actually processing my claim through my previous employer rather than the one that fired me. So confusing!!

I work in HR and can tell you that "time clock manipulation" is a very specific accusation that requires evidence. If you truly didn't have access to modify time records, your former employer will have a hard time proving this during an appeal. Make sure to emphasize in your appeal that only HR had access to modify time records in your system. Ask for a copy of your personnel file too - they're required to provide it within 30 days in California.

That's really helpful advice! I didn't know I could request my personnel file. I'm 100% confident there's nothing in there about time issues because it was never discussed with me. Do I need to make this request in writing?

If your trying to get ahold of EDD to sort this out, I highly recommend using Claimyr. I was in a similar situation with conflicting letters and spent WEEKS trying to get through on the phone. Claimyr got me connected to an actual EDD rep in less than 30 minutes! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km The EDD rep was able to see both claims in their system and explained exactly what was happening. Worth every penny because I was able to get my benefits started the following week instead of being stuck in limbo.

Does this actually work? I've been calling the stupid EDD number for like 2 weeks straight and can't get through. I'm desperate at this point.

@profile4 Yes it actually works! Go to claimyr.com - I was skeptical too but I was at my wits end. Got through to EDD within 25 minutes after trying for days on my own.

OMG the exact same thing happened to my sister!!! She got a disqualification letter on Monday and then on Wednesday got another letter with certification instructions. She just went ahead and certified and got paid!! EDD is such a mess, their left hand doesn't know what the right is doing half the time.

That's actually really encouraging to hear! Did she ever figure out what happened with the disqualification? I'm wondering if I should still file an appeal or just see if the benefits come through with the DoorDash claim.

To answer your question about appealing - you should definitely still file the appeal for the disqualification even if you start receiving benefits through the DoorDash claim. Here's why: 1. The disqualification could affect your benefit amount (your Davis job likely paid more than DoorDash) 2. It protects you if there are any future issues with the DoorDash claim 3. A disqualification for misconduct could affect future unemployment claims 4. You have a limited window to appeal (30 days from notice date) You can file an appeal online through UI Online or by mailing in the appeal form that came with your disqualification notice. Be very specific about the facts - that you were told it was a layoff due to restructuring, that you didn't have access to time clock systems, and that there were no prior disciplinary actions related to this issue.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'll definitely file the appeal this week. One more question - should I mention in my appeal that I'm already getting benefits through my DoorDash claim (assuming I do), or keep them completely separate?

Keep them separate in your appeal. The appeal should focus solely on the facts surrounding your separation from Davis Marketing. You don't need to mention anything about DoorDash or another claim in your appeal statement. The judge will only be concerned with whether your termination from Davis was for misconduct or not.

LOL classic EDD giving you a disqualification and an approval at the same time!!!!!! There computer systems are from like 1980 or somthing, i swear. Just go ahead and certify whenever it lets you, worst they can do is say no. But yeah you need to deal with that bogus misconduct thing too or itll follow you around.

Was the EDDCAN number on both letters the same? If it's two different numbers that would confirm you have two separate claims being processed. If it's the same number on both letters, then EDD might have just made a correction to your existing claim. Either way, you should be able to see your claim status on UI Online. Check the Claim Summary section.

That's a good question - let me double check... They're actually the same EDDCAN number on both letters. But the claim summary in UI Online just shows the claim with DoorDash listed. So confusing!

If they're the same EDDCAN but now showing DoorDash as employer, it sounds like they may have actually revised your claim rather than created a new one. This is actually good news! It likely means they shifted the base period of your claim to focus on your DoorDash earnings instead of your Davis Marketing employment. Definitely still file that appeal for the Davis disqualification though. If you win, they might recalculate your benefits to include the higher wages, depending on your base period.

This situation is more common than you'd think! When EDD processes claims, they sometimes initially evaluate based on one employer but then shift to another if the first doesn't meet eligibility requirements. Since you have the same EDDCAN number on both letters but now see DoorDash as your employer in UI Online, it looks like they redirected your claim to use your gig work earnings instead. Here's what I'd recommend: 1. Go ahead and certify when your weeks become available - the system is clearly set up for you to receive benefits 2. Still file that appeal for the Davis Marketing disqualification ASAP (you have 30 days from the notice date) 3. Keep detailed records of everything - screenshots of UI Online, copies of all letters, etc. The fact that you're seeing tax withholding options means your claim is definitely active. Don't let the conflicting letters stress you out too much - EDD's communication is notoriously confusing, but the important thing is that you have an active claim number and can certify for benefits while you're job searching. Good luck with everything, and definitely fight that misconduct determination if you know it's false!

This is such a helpful breakdown, thank you! I've been so stressed about the conflicting letters but your explanation makes it sound like the system is actually working in my favor. I'm going to screenshot my UI Online account right now and start gathering all my documentation for the appeal. Really appreciate everyone's advice on this thread - it's been way more helpful than trying to get through to EDD directly!

I went through something very similar last year! Got a disqualification letter on Tuesday and then an EDDCAN number on Friday - I was so confused. Turns out EDD had shifted my claim to use my part-time retail job instead of my full-time position where I got "terminated for cause" (which was bogus). The key thing is that EDDCAN number - that means you have an active claim! I'd suggest logging into UI Online and checking if you have any weeks available to certify. If you do, go ahead and certify. The worst that happens is they say you're not eligible, but if the system is letting you certify, that's usually a good sign. Also definitely appeal that misconduct determination from Davis Marketing. Even if you're getting benefits through the DoorDash claim now, having a misconduct on your record could hurt you for future claims. I appealed mine and won because my employer couldn't provide any actual evidence of the misconduct they claimed. The whole process took about 6 weeks from appeal to hearing, but it was worth it to clear my record. Stay persistent!

Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. Six weeks for the appeal process doesn't sound too bad considering how backed up EDD usually is. Did you have to provide any specific documentation during your appeal, or was it mainly just your testimony against theirs? I'm trying to gather everything I can to make the strongest case possible since I know this "time clock manipulation" claim is completely false.
