CalFresh reduced my benefits after income reporting mistake - how to fix it?

I'm so upset right now! Just checked my EBT and my CalFresh benefits dropped from $430 to only $138 this month with NO WARNING. Called the county and after waiting 45 mins, they said I "incorrectly reported" my income on my last SAR7. Apparently I wrote my GROSS income instead of NET on line 6 or something?? They think I'm making $850 more per month than I actually take home! The worker said I need to submit proof of my actual income (paystubs) and fill out a form to request a recalculation, but it might take weeks to process. My family can't survive on $138 for a month! Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any way to speed this up? My kids are already asking why I didn't get the "good cereal" this week 😭

omg this EXACT thing happened to my cousin last year! the county is always messing stuff up. did they at least tell u how to fix it? they should be able to adjust it for next month if u bring ur paystubs ASAP

They said I need to submit a 'Benefit Correction Request' form along with all my paystubs from the last 3 months. I'm going to the office tomorrow morning when they open. Just hoping they don't make me wait until next month's issuance date 😞

I'm a eligibility worker (not for your county) but I can tell you this is unfortunately common. The SAR7 form is confusing about income reporting. For fastest resolution: 1. Bring ALL paystubs from the income reporting period they're questioning 2. Ask specifically for an "immediate need" recalculation due to significant benefit reduction 3. Request an "expedited correction" since this was a county processing error if you can prove you reported correctly By law, they should correct this within 10 days if it was their error. If it takes longer, you can request a state hearing.

THANK YOU!! This is exactly what I needed to know. I didn't know about the "immediate need" option. I'll definitely ask for that tomorrow. Do I need to bring anything else besides paystubs?

Bring your ID, a copy of the SAR7 you submitted if you have it, and any notices about the benefit reduction. Also write down the exact date you submitted the SAR7 and how (online, mail, in person). If you have a copy of the original form you submitted, that would be extremely helpful to prove it was their error and not yours.

i swear the whole system is designed to confuse people!!! i've been on calfresh for 5 years and STILL get confused about what income to report where. like why can't they just make it simple? and then they punish US when we make honest mistakes?? smh

EXACTLY!!!! And then when you try to CALL them to get help filling out the forms they put you on hold forever or just disconnect you! I wasted 3 hours last month trying to reach someone. The system is totally broken.

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach them by phone? I wasted 2 hours on hold last month for a similar issue, then found this service where they actually wait on hold FOR YOU and call you back when a worker picks up. It saved me hours of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Might be worth it for something this urgent where you really need to talk to someone before going in person.

I've never heard of this but definitely going to check it out! I tried calling again today and got disconnected after 30 mins. So frustrating when you're trying to feed your family and can't even reach someone to help.

does that actually work? seems sketchy to me lol. like how do they even do that

It definitely works! They basically have a system that holds your place in line and monitors for when a human answers. Nothing sketchy about it - they don't take any personal info about your benefits, they just connect the call when someone picks up.

I had a similar problem last year and found out you can request what's called an "Expedited Mid-Period Action" if your benefits were reduced in error. I brought my paystubs showing my actual income and they fixed it within 3 days and even gave me the difference for the current month. Make sure to be very firm that your family can't make it through the month on the reduced amount. Use the phrase "immediate need due to benefit calculation error" - those exact words seemed to help my case.

This is really helpful! I'll definitely use that phrase. Did you have to fill out any special forms for the expedited action or just bring your paystubs?

They had me fill out a form while I was there - I think it was called a "Request for Action" form where I explained the error. Then they attached my paystubs and processed it right away. The key was getting to speak with a supervisor after the regular worker tried to tell me I'd have to wait until next month.

u know whats crazy tho? u can report LESS income and they take FOREVER to increase ur benefits but report MORE income by accident and they cut ur benefits instantly 🙄 the whole system is rigged

THIS!!!! When my hours got cut last year it took them 6 weeks to adjust my benefits upward but when my teenager got a part-time job they reduced our benefits within DAYS. Make it make sense!!!

last time I had trouble with my benifets I just reapplied completley instead of trying to fix the old case. it was faster for me. maybe try that?

This isn't recommended in this situation. Filing a new application when you have an active case can actually cause more complications and delays. The system will flag it as a duplicate and it could potentially result in your current benefits being put on hold while they sort out why you're applying twice. It's better to correct the existing case through the proper channels.

UPDATE: I went to the office this morning and brought all my paystubs. Asked for an "immediate need recalculation" like you all suggested. The first worker said I'd have to wait, but I asked to speak to a supervisor and mentioned the "expedited mid-period action" that someone here recommended. The supervisor was actually super helpful! They reviewed my case right there and saw I had consistently reported my NET income correctly on previous reports. They're correcting the error and issuing the rest of my benefits within 3 business days!! Thank you all SO MUCH for your advice. It really made a difference knowing exactly what to ask for!

This is great news! So glad it worked out. It's frustrating that you have to know the exact right terms to get help, but I'm happy the supervisor recognized the error. Make sure to keep an eye on your EBT card to confirm the additional benefits get added.

yay!!! so happy for u! the system is so broken but at least this time it worked out in the end!

This is such a perfect example of why we need better advocacy resources! Maya, I'm so glad you got this resolved quickly thanks to everyone's advice here. It's really sad that you have to know the "magic words" like "expedited mid-period action" to get proper help, but this thread shows how powerful community knowledge sharing can be. For anyone else dealing with similar issues - screenshot Maya's update and the specific terms that worked! Having that language ready can make all the difference when you're stressed and trying to advocate for yourself at the county office.

This is so true! I'm actually new to this community and just reading through this whole thread has been eye-opening. I had no idea there were specific terms like "expedited mid-period action" that could help speed things up. It's honestly kind of scary how much the system depends on you knowing the right words to say. Like what happens to people who don't have access to communities like this? Maya was lucky to find this help, but it shouldn't be this hard in the first place. Definitely saving this thread for future reference!
